When we heard about Carter's XC Ski Center in Bethel, Maine, we had to experience it for ourselves. Wow, did it have so much more than we could have imagined. The drive alone was worth the trip as we passed along sweeping pastures that coalesce with protuding peaks, there was a welcoming sense of comfort with a pace of life that felt patient and soothing. Passing the postcard New England Homes, each with their own charm and stoicism as they proudly perched upon the land. Old red barns, smoke whisping from chimneys, kids happily embracing a hearty winter week in the yards, and a perfect blend of mature pines, airy clouds. and a bluebird sky to complete the painting we were driving through. Right amongst this scene sits a very special place. Rolling up to Carter's Ski Center we see people of all ages gliding along blissfully smiling, cheeks rosey red, bundled up for a day on the trails. The lodge, constructed from what I assume to be saw milled lumber from one of Maine's many sustainable logging operations, will instantly invite you to go inside. Mainers care about thier forests and do things the right way to both make a living and preserve the forests natural resources. We purchase our day pass, pet the shop dog by the woodstove, and get a recommendation from the lovely woman at the counter. Oh, if you need gear, this place has more options than most full fledged ski shops for Nordic Ski equipment. If your hungry, a food truck awaits outside at the trail head leaving from the lodge. Maybe you've come with a family and not everyone loves to cross country ski, they have that covered with snowshoe trails and best of all Fatbike rentals. The trail network is much bigger than expected and it winds through quaint neighborhoods, farmland, and old logging areas. We only had our Fischer OTX s-bound 112 backcountry nordic skis with us but turns out they have trails and low angle glades, perfect for getting some pow turns in and exploring the upper sections, full of big open views. Sunday River Ski Resort is just across the valley, you can see the slopes from the trails and get your lift service fix while your there too. As I'm kicking, gliding, turning and enjoying, I think to myself I may never leave...In fact I may just ask to move into one of the many Ski In Ski Out cabins for rent right on the idyllic trails.
