I’ll always think 80s. They did have some good stuff in the 90s too. But it was really contrasting to most of the grunge that was prevalent.

Their early 1979-1980 post-punk sound is incredible: Boys Don't Cry, So What, A Forest live at Werchter Festival, 10:15 on a Saturday Night (which Robert Smith wrote at 16). Along with The Clash, Bauhaus, Joy Division and Bowie, they were so different than anything else that came out of the 70's.

I remember when this came out a whole lot of us were puzzled by the fact the The Cure had actually put out an upbeat, happy song.
@3toobular

EXACTLY!!! We used to play a sort of game where you try to find the happy truly upbeat song from them. Sure you have catchy sounds but when you look at the lyrics to most of their classic songs...depressing and dark disguised in the sugary sound.

I loved how the song is about the sadness of having nothing but pictures of her to remember her by. And then Microsoft used the song to advertise their picture sharing service (which eventually became Instagram, I think? Or a competitor for IG that was rebranded.) Not an upbeat song, but MS ad execs didn’t really consider that before playing it over happy skies and whatnot.

The Cure was more than a band for many of us early 90s goth kids. Rock music had gone so dark in the early 90s....and The Cure was a band that spoke to us kids and told us that yes there are many dark things in this world....but there is also hope. Which is what this song is about. Every day of the week can be absolutely horrible in its aloneness....but there's always hope for that 1 time....that Friday....where you have love. The Cure literally saved the lives of many kids who felt hopelessness amid a world of people who didnt understand and who just wanted to rage. Goth kids just wanted to understand what they were feeling without being so depressed about it. The Cure told us that love was not only possible....but was real and within reach if we dont give up.

Yes, The Cure was unique! The Cure started in the late 70's and became famous in the 80's. They are a product of the punk/new wave/alternative rock movement in Great Britain at that time. This band was part of the 2nd British invasion of the 80's. If I'm not mistaken, this song came out in the early 90's. Great memories !!! 🥰

This is one of my all-time favorite groups. No doubt they were inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame. They were so influential to so many groups over the years. their strength has always been the unique sound, tone, and lyrics by frontman Robert Smith. They are one of few bands that, when you hear them, you tell yourself "yep, that's the Cure" If you want to deep dive into them, you must check out some of their earlier songs. I credit "A Letter to Elise" as the inspiration for my daughter's middle name. Such a great, emotional, smart band.

From 79 to 84, this band wrote great depressing songs that appealed to a small loyal audience, and were big in the UK. Starting in 85, they decided to change approach and write happier stuff like " in between days" and their career really took off. From that point, they were becoming a pop band with huge hit singles. This was one of their later hits in 92. Personally, I love their 2001 song " cut here", never understood why it wasn't huge
@lemurvision
@lemurvision Жыл бұрын
They wrote happier/more upbeat stuff before, like “The Love Cats”, “The Caterpillar” and “Let’s Go to Bed”. Some people associate them only with sad or slow dirgey stuff, so it confuses them when they occasionally release a pop song, I guess.

I love the Cure! It was the early 90s and I was just started 9th grade when this first came out. I remember my friends and I walking down the street, in our doc martins, ripped jeans, rock tees, and open flannels, signing this song out loud. It was a fun time! As Amber said, 90's music shows more emotion. I always say that it was a time when they weren't afraid to show their inner darkness and emotions. On another note, Robert Smith has a great love story himself with his wife Mary Poole. They met when he was 14 and have been married for almost 40 years.

The Cure started in the 1970's but this was one of their most popular songs and was in the 1990's. Robert Smith actually started out as a drummer for Siouxsie and the Creatures. As for the "emotional" part of it, this is goth music, not at it's best, but 1990's goth hop all the same.

Spot on...the 80s introduced a lot of new innovation, synthesisers, electric keyboards and the whole new wave driven by the UK bands, the 90s consolidated and refined what the 80s brought in. If you want a similar vibe, try Ordinary World by Duran Duran. When it comes to the 90s pop charts, there were 80s bands that still had big hits in the 90s, but that started to become less and less as "grunge" and alternative rock took over. There was also a huge wave of one hit wonder bands that are harder to categorize because they were sort of doing their own thing regardless of the trends happening around them

The Cure is an 80's Band to me (and to a whole lot of people) Even though this song came out in '92 it still very much has a signature 80's Cure sound.

The Cure is a band that spans decades from the late 70s to now. And it is very eclectic because of that. They had roots in punk, they became a goth standard, and they also did pop. I think you should listen to “The Thirteenth” for the horns. “Spiderman” for something really Halloween creepy. “Doing the Unstuck” is also a great one and inspirational. As for Valentine’s, I think it is pretty cool that Robert Smith, the lead singer and guitarist, had been married to his wife and high school sweetheart Mary Poole for thirty five years. ❤❤❤ Smith credits his stability to her strength. “Love Song” was his wedding gift to her. Before marrying Robert and the Cure’s success as a band, Mary was a nurse. I think a lot of women would find it hard to be married to the rock lifestyle, but Mary always seemed to be pretty strong in herself. For all the sad goth songs, Robert had always had it good in his love life.

The Cure has always been kind of in the shadows - but they have a huge "underground" fanbase filled with many of us who adored them from the start. Their songwriting has always been on point even though their music might be considered "strange" by some. They appealed (and still do appeal) to Goths, but also anyone who occasionally feels misunderstood or different to others. My favorite song was one of their earlier hits: "A Forest". It's mysterious but with a catchy flow that keeps you hooked! P.S. Being in love on Friday makes me think of it being the day of love in Pagan mythology - since it's dedicated to love Goddesses like Frigg (Norse mythology: Odin's wife) and Aphrodite (Greek Goddess of Love.) ❣

You probably hear the 80’s sound bc they formed in the late 70’s but had most of their songs in the 80’s. This was their first radio mainstream hit. Some 90’s bands to react to: 311 “Amber” Incubus “Wish You Were Here” Smashing Pumpkins “Mayonnaise”

The Cure are great at creating something unique from very simple elements. They were dark and angsty in the 80’s and fun loving in the 90’s.

This was the first happy sounding song from The Cure. Previously nearly every song was sad or melancholy.

Biggest differences between the 80s and 90s is that in the 90s they remembered what a guitar was and how to use it. And the lyrics were a bit more sophisticated.

Gotta do some REM for the 90's. "Everybody Hurts" is a good place to start. Also, Nirvana - they started the Grunge era. Depeche Mode & Garbage is awesome too!

The Cure formed in 1978 and had much 'alternative' success in the eighties and pop success in the nineties. This might be why it sounds like eighties music to you. The song that first turned me onto them was "Close To Me" - it's very different than what you've heard from them so far but definitely worth listening to.

The Cure goes all the way back to 1976 in the UK. Lead singer Robert Smith is the only band member that has remained in the group throughout the years. The Cure has an extensive catalog of hit songs and music videos throughout their career. The 1980s were the most successful period for the group in the US. Both of you might want to react to their song/music video for their song, “Fascination Street”.

Amber, The Cure date back to 1978. They are still active today after 45 years. Robert Smith is, I think, the only original member left in the band.

'Charlotte Sometimes' or 'A Forest' are worth reacting to, different again! Also I think you should take a listen to Echo and the Bunnymen too, 'Never Stop' 'Lips like Sugar' or 'The back of love' would be ideal to start with.

The Cure are so much more than a nineties band. Their debut single "Killing An Arab" was released in 1978 and is still a superb single. Ever since that single The Cure haven't missed a beat and I would suggest that along with Siouxsie have a superb body of work.

Probably the first band that comes to my mind when I think of 80s music. Other favorites of that time include Talk Talk, Icehouse, Japan, English Beat, Alphaville, Depeche Mode, Human League, and The Police.
