What a beautiful knife! I'm a chef here in Texas and I use German & Japanese knives. But as far as my go to knife in the kitchen, nothing beats my Masamoto Virgin steel Gyuto 270mm! I love this knife! I can imagine that the same craftsmanship and pride that went into making my chefs knife, would also be found in your Japanese Bushcraft knife .... Looks like I'll have to add this knife to my Christmas wish list! ;) Thank you for sharing your videos, take care!

Great video. Knives of the Fallkniven line are now made in Japan. Seki has a great reputation. There is a local consortium that makes beautiful/functional knives ranging from Damascus gentlemen's knives to enhanced versions of US WW2 paratrooper knives to hunting knives. Many of the great designers like Al Mar and Bob Lum have had their knives made there and are stilling being made in Japan. It is no surprise that "bushcraft" knives have been made in Japan for centuries.

It's a beautiful knife, and I want one lol, but it would suffer in what America calls bushcraft. Bushcraft consists of carving, widdling , batoning, and other things that the sane difference in length would cause issues with. This knife with the tip, would be a perfect bushcraft knife in any country, more steel, better steel, amazing handle, and could honestly take the place of every knife in a collection, survival, bushcraft, and tactical. Great blade, and again, I want one lol

Very nice looking knife. The textured pattern on the handle almost reminds me of one of those older Smith and Wesson revolver grips.

Hiya Doc, Our toys we play with in our bushcraft playpen are similar but different too, I don't have as many knives as you have but I do have just a couple of good (what I consider good at the price I can afford) the only traditional knife that I have that's a Puukku is made by Lynn Thompson in honor of his Danish wife, it's called the SISU, but I alway's wanted a Traditional Scandinavian Style Knife, like your Traditional Japanese Knife your showing, I think traditions are important, since I'm Ukrainian my people were farmers, our country is also known as the "Bread Basket of Europe" bushcrafting or like the Scandinavians call Laplander wasn't a form of living for us, we did use the basic tool's like knives, swords, ax pitchforks to make our lives easier and we made all our survival needs, but we didn't inherent a name sort of speak to our tools, like the Katana or the Puukku etc. but the reason I found your video was I trust you. and I just bought a set of knives that I always wanted, the Leuku, Tactical reviewed a knife he got as a gift from Snake Plisskin a friend of his, anyhow it was on the Leuku, and right then and there I said this is my cue, so I started reaserch in the Leuku Kniv and I looked for a good ( since I know nothing about that kind of knife ) I found out his gift was made by Stromeng, today I pulled the trigger on my first Traditional Kniv, I got the same one Tactical reviewed in his video, and also bought two more since I like buying my knives in pairs of atleast two, this time three because I use to be atleast a 3knife carry persom, the other two kniv's are the 5 inch KS 5, and a smaller Buhkku (LIL) Stak, it is similar in style to the 94 Olympic Kniv that was given to the Olympian as a gift from the Country they participated in, like I said before that the closest knife that I had was made by Cold Steel called the Sisu but I think it's made in Japan a great country that makes great knives, mine is in the San Mai VG-1, pretty good stuff, C.S. Also makes a cheaper knife similar called the Finn Bear, but it's made in the .4116 Krupp Stainless Steel it's not a bad kitchen knife but some lik e it for the price, anyhow I always listen and learn from your video's Oh by the way my KS is a Carbon Steel the smaller kniv's made by Stromeng are in the 12c27 Sandvik Steel and I was just wondering if you had any experience with this type of steel, Thank You so much in advance, I really enjoy what you have to say on your video's. By the way some of our friends speak very highly on your generosity and the gifts you gave them, I believe it's in giving, we recieve, my B'Day is in October hint, hint, heh heh heh

Thanks a lot for offering to do that for me! The Mora also compares well price-wise, as the Japanese knife sells for $90. That is not a bad price, but it is hard to compete with Moras in that department. I like the look of the handle. It reminds me of early revolver grips. There is probably a way to use acid to bring back the pattern that the polishing removed. This is definitely a good looking knife at least.

One of my favorite grinds for what I do in the bush, I don't dress game anymore, and the few birds I knock down, a small sharp knife will do, it doesn't take much to clean a Grouse or a Pheasant, not like the surgery you do on your deer heh heh he, your defenetly a artist at work, that's great Doc, but anyhow my favorite grind is the Saber Vex Grind, infact a Scandi Grind is very similar in geometry to a Saber Grind, the fact is both have a secondary Relief Edge, except the Saber Grind's is higher and the blade is thicker on a Full Grind the wood starts to split at the spine, on a lower relief edge the wood starts to split at that point, so there's not as much wood drag as om the full hrind, most guys say a full grind slices better, but I say that depends on how you profile the angle on that relief edge, and besides I use my tool's alot to go out and process wood for a nice hot cup of coffee on the open fire, look for some fat wood and carve or whittle as I enjoy one of my cigars, I don't inhale, and the kind I smoke I just can't afford to chain smoke, so 2-3 sticks is usually my limit a day, but yeah I can get my Saber Vex Grind pretty sharp, and if I'm doing multi functions, I multi carry it's that simple, the knife carry depends, now that I got some new knives, I have to take them through their paces and figure out what to do with them, but my go to set of cutting tool's are my two Swamp Rat's the Rodent 7 and the Rodent 4, both have choil's and saber vex grinds, infact I thinned down my Rodent 4, the choil to me is a multi function advantage it's like having two knives in one, even with my Rodent 7 I could do basic things with it just like a smaller knife, ah a good folding saw, it was you that introduced me to the Silky saw I got the BigBoy 2000 but my favorite super tough compact saw is the Wicked Tough Saw made by Wicked Tree Gear check them out on KZfaq I think you will be impressed, then I take my Hatchet which is the 2Hawk Double Bit Hatchet made by 2Hawks, it's not only very compact, it's very functional, one side (bit) is for chopping, and the other side is for splitting, great idea by Nessmuk ( George Washington Sear's he explains it in his book), great idea and it's becoming my all time favorite even over my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, unless we're going for a longer stay in cold snowy weather, then the big axe cones with us, and a multi tool mine is the Leatherman Charge TTi, but all I need is the Awl, but anyhow these are my favorite tool's to make a hot cup of coffee on the open fire, but actually those tool's can last and last on any excursion regardless of how long they are with only a few minor changes, like a larger saw, and a larger axe, anyhow before I do a long Dissertation on Bushcrafting heh heh heh, I better stop, see what you do, you make a gaby out of me, again I enjoy your reviews, Thanx Doc.

Hiya Doc, I just pulled the trigger on a new bush knife which I plan to pair it off with my Busse Son of Badger which is becoming my favorite bushcraft knife, my new aquistion is my Nuclear Meltdown Fussion Steel Heart I have the Anneversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress LE and it's a great chopper but its also 11 inch blade and a little heavy chunk of INFI Steel to carry around but I paired it off with my INFI Ratmandu which is a little thinner than my Swamp Rat Ratmandu, I also like my Sarge 7 which is a lite knife for that size blade and I paired it off with my Anneversary Mean Street LE that's an interesting set, it's light and complements my Wicked Tough Saw and my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet just fine, a little different than your toys, but that's what works for me in my playpen (Bush).

Love the knife!! Seems like your sharpening stones are not flat.......... On a different note, what brand in that small nata knife???
Did the damascus pattern disappear because it was etched (painted or fake) or does it need a weak acid to bring it out again? I would love to own a san-mai laminated, traditional knife from Japan for my collection.
@virtuovice11 жыл бұрын
It is factory made damascus. Hitachi steel company provides it from the factory as a laminated Damascus with a blue paper core. Many laminated stocks are selling at Toyokuni company in various sizes and thickness. Thanks.

Is that a forestry bushcraft knife or a carpenter’s knife?. ....... I have an similar modern version of this which was advertised as a ‘demolition tool knife’ Same size with a knife blade that doesn’t have a point but a right angled end sharpened so you can use it a chisel. Full tang with steel pommel for chisel & mallet work. I bought to use as a carpentry knife for general building products. ............ It doesn’t have a pointed tip so I can’t use it for drilling a hole or for for detailed carving with the normal drop point area.

Hello Doc, I guess you can't break the tip off your new Japanese Bushcraft Knife, heh heh heh, I like it, but is it strong enough to baton with it, at least kindling ? A sharp point is beneficial on a bush craft knife, like starting a hole in a hartboard, or digging out something out of a tree, multi functional, but I like that knife, and I'm sure I could get use to it, the more I look at it the more I like it, Thank You for sharing it with us.

So by your logic time proven utility and bushcraft designs like leuko, pukko (inc mora) and most original kukri are only good for shaving because they have either partial or stick tangs. Seems legit.
@embaradosmithingandwoodcraft9 жыл бұрын
queef x no that I say they were only good for shaving what I said is that they're not good for much more than shaving they can handle light carving and cutting food but should you be hiking in the wilderness and something happened in your main pack which included your main shopping device I had cataracts
@embaradosmithingandwoodcraft9 жыл бұрын
prepper embarado that should read hatchet or axe fall into a river and beyond retrievable you'd like to know the knife on your hip is reliable to make firewood with for a brief time and for that you must have a full tang 3/8 to1/4 inch thick spine your knife so that it can stand up to but timing
@embaradosmithingandwoodcraft9 жыл бұрын
prepper embarado this is why I say Hey Mora night is only good for light duty As I am a wilderness survival teacher I have seen more moras broken when students insisted that they could stand up to it cuz it never fails I'm sorry you are obviously a fan of the moron and whilst the more I can handle a little bit of a very small material it cannot stand up to repeated but toning that's all there is to it
