Neat trick for straight lines: use the presser foot as a guide. It is literally the only reason I have straight lines at all. Also, thrifts usually have really cool bags of “scrap” fabric and it’s always fun to make things with it, if you get more into sewing! You’re doing great so far!

The point about thrifted sewing machines as a beginner is actually a really valid one! Mine is a hand me down from a friend of my grandma and i don't have an manual or anything. I run into problems all the time that i can't figure out how to fix, so i use it way less than i would actually want to. Lots of fun with your new baby 🤗

Congrats on starting a new craft! My wife sews, and apparently it can become quite the addiction... One bedroom now is known as the Fabric Vault, basically several large Ikea storage units full of fabric in every color and pattern. No room to actually sew in there! That's done in the family room on two large tables (with two ironing boards) with the "main" Viking sewing machine. Singer treadle machine lives in the living room and a restored Singer is up in the master bedroom for whatever you need a third sewing machine for... So, three machines, a bedroom given over to fabric storage and lots of quilt making going on. Enjoy!

I REALLY feel like John could make a folding tabletop with hinge for you to put on the table. That way you can sit in front of it properly, then when your done, you can just fold it back over to save space! I got the same machine for Christmas and it wasn't working (it was something with the tension) and it didn't come with instructions. My mother had to go online and find the Manuel for it. I was worried that I accidently threw them away, but you thankfully proved I didn't! Thank you!

As a middle aged disabled man, use caution. 3 years ago I started with a machine like that, long story short, I have 7 machines now, 5 of them are vintage thrift store finds. Get old jeans and dress shirts and cut them up to make stuff, and I buy washable glue sticks in bulk, no pins...

I hope you get a chance to read this but i'd like to give some advice. I've been sewing all my life my mom and grandmother have sewn all their lives as well. 100% cotton is the way to go when possible! Some projects may require other kinds and that's fine but rule of thumb is that cotton is best! I'm not sure if you have a joanns near you but if you do it can be a great place to go get get fabric and supplies make sure you use coupons and do your best to never pay full price it's like michaels and kohls you always use a coupon. Also! never be afraid to ask for help i've found most people that sew are so happy to share that with others so if you ever have questions reach out! Also try not to focus too much on getting it perfect, you will drive yourself mad! ENjoy the process do your best and keep learning those are the most important things not perfection! Also for masks specifically I have had great success with this super soft elastic I got on amazon called "face mask elastic" it feels like nothing on my ears! Happy crafting! Ah I bought a cheap sewing machine off Amazon about a month ago! One you can load the bobbin and thread it all up, the more you just mess around with the settings the more you'll just pick up on the way :) Watching KZfaq videos really help too if you just wanna get the basics mastered! I’m absolutely losing my mind over this Girlfriend’s Day story 😭😂 ALSO I freaking had the best thrift of my life a couple months ago- I got a vintage tabletop Kenmore sewing machine from a thrift store for $12.99. I completely took a chance on it knowing it might not even work; but it came in it’s original case (which was yellowed with age, but the machine itself was PRISTINE white) with a small box of the original extra goodies that came with it. I brought it home, plugged it in, and it WORKED 😭🙏🏻 I was able to look up its serial number online and by the grace of the sewing gods a PDF of this old manual came up ✨ straight up I think someone had received it as a gift years ago and just never used it/ stored it away.

Beware of some modern shift dress patterns that are not the traditional shift dress from the 1960s. Some modern shift dress patterns have a bodice, a skirt sewn and a zip and it is called a shift pattern.
