The MiSTer and FPGA gaming has been one of the most exciting things in retro gaming in recent years in my opinion. I've been enjoying it in all its forms, from the stacked bare bones style system to the MiSTer Fusion desktop I built, but I've always wanted a console style model that consolodates all of those boards into one, and makes the point of entry into the MiSTer world nice and simple for potential users. So we made it!
This is the MiSTer Multisystem.

Very interesting. I am the creator of the original MIST that started all this and it's really surprising what it has evolved into. And it's also fun to see a bunch if bits and pieces I did 10 years ago to still be a part of this. I should get myself a MISTer one day to display it beside my various MIST incarnations.

@@nickwallette6201 that's the thing. I WANT to give them my money. I've had the cost of their Pocket earmarked since it was announced. I missed all four seconds of the preorder window what must be more than a year ago by now, and I'm frankly glad I did, because still nobody has one in their hands. There's no evidence it even exists, yet, and the short videos they're showing on Twitter are displaying some common emulation bugs you wouldn't expect of an FPGA device. Or even of a modern, competent software emulator. I'm actually concerned they don't really have a product this time.

@PeterBraymusic
@PeterBraymusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@brentgreeff1115 the 2.9 upgrade is mostly to make the RAM board easier to produce. There’s no need to upgrade if your current RAM is performing well. Edit: Just to clarify: I meant that there's no need to upgrade an older RAM board to a new one if your current one is working fine (such as running CPS2 cores with no problems). Nothing to do with the Multisystem which offers a lot more than just RAM and looks awesome.

Yeah. I tried a raspberry pi, it was an absolute nightmare to set up because it was so slow. I'd set it to extract a small rar file for whatever, and I'd have to leave it and come back on half an hour before it was finally done. Imagine every click taking that long. The raspberry pi is far too weak And once I had everything set up, I found out that retro pie is pretty terrible. At the moment anyway. It's got so much input lag that the game are unplayable So it was a fun experiment but I'm never using any raspberry pi based system again. I do not like Linux and how terribly annoying it is to do any basic thing in it Eventually I got a GPD XD+ android handheld (it's like a DS because it folds closed, but with one screen, and that screen is a touchscreen, and it has all the buttons a modern controller has like 4 shoulder buttons, 2 clickable analogue sticks etc). The GPD thing runs android. And I've tried everything else, and android is the best platform for emulation easily, if you're just after playing the games and you're not a TAS speedrunner or something. Unlike the PC emulators, android emulators are always being updated still. And the emulators generally have far more options than PC or retro pi ones do Oh and you can plug it into a TV via HDMI and sit back and use Bluetooth controllers with it. I've played multiplayer mario kart 64 on my TV using this thing. It makes it a really good compliment to my Switch, because it's both a handheld and a plug in console of a sort Retro pie might be fine for some people but I couldn't stand how much input lag it had and how difficult it was to do something basic, like say assign save state and load state as actions to certain buttons on a controller. You just couldn't do it. Every other emulator on every other platform you can do it, but not retro pie. Stuff like that, I can't be bothered with it. It's bad, right now

That is one of the major benefits... but its also on par with real hardware, where software emulation is not. Jotego's arcade cores for example like capcom CPS are 44% more accurate than MAME. With that said, software emulation is great and it has the potential to one day be on par like FPGA in 10 or 20 years, maybe. Assuming the liberals don't destroy the planet by then.
@haraldhimmel5687
@haraldhimmel5687 2 жыл бұрын
@@StarshipGhost The accuracy part is a little wonky though. Some of the cores (sadly not all) are very accurate but many of them often still differ somewhat and do not respond 100% accurate in every situation. Some also need some fixes that may not be present in the original system to play nice with modern hw. Overall it is a very exciting angle for retro systems, also because the hardware isn't set in stone and can receive upgrades but I feel that the "on par with real hardware" argument is a little overemphasized sometimes. VS emulation think its the other way round actually. Emulation should not be superior but it might take quite some time to get many cores on par with cycle accurate emulation. > Assuming the liberals don't destroy the planet by then. Ah yeah I heard they keep shoehorning their agenda into debates that have nothing to do with it.

@@blitzwing1 And even latency is not a total win for FPGA. On 16-bit systems like SNES a good "software" emulator can beat FPGA emulation and original hardware for latency, with the right setup and if that is even wanted. Or it can match them of course. A lot of SNES games have 2 or 3 frames of latency built in to the way they work, total accuracy will simply recreate that but an emulator with runahead can get around it. Of course it's not true to the original experience but it's a nice option to have. Then there is lagless vsync that can get very close to the latency of older systems that don't even buffer their frames.

@@godslayer1415 No, they've designed an expansion board and a case. The expansion board has ram onboard, they've made it so you can remove the onboard ram and upgrade it if needed. This is a good solution as integrating the ram into the expansion board allows them to reduce the cost over buying both separately, and making sure it can be removed means you don't need to ditch the expansion board if the ram fails or needs to be upgraded. If you think they've only built a case then you should actually watch the video.

While it's true upgradeable RAM is a MiSTer thing, and everything from the SNAC connectors to the various video outputs can already be done with add on boards this is the first really easy plug and play solution with an all in one board that can do almost everything. He hasn't just "made a case" at all. Basically, get your DE10-Nano, plug it in and assemble the case, stick in your SD card and you're done. If it works as well as advertised, owning a MiSTer got a lot easier.
