This is something I have observed over the years, channels that focus on developing skills, finding experiences, talking with experts, or otherwise consistently learning new things regularly work best when you have at least two distinct personalities who can approach the process from different angles. Examples have been: Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of Mythbusters; Kari Byron, Grant Imahara, and Tory Belleci, also of Mythbusters/Project White Rabbit; Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May of Top Gear/Grand Tour; Richard Hammond and Tory Belleci of The Great Escapists; Mark and Ethan of Unus Annus; and of course Brian and Jason of Modern Rogue. My point being that you really need a consistent person to bounce your personality off of and who can also be as interest in learning these talents as you. An idea that just crossed my mind is that with Roosterteeth/Achievement Hunter officially disbanding there may be some recruitable talent from there, and many of them are already located in the Austin, Texas area.

what do i want out of the show... if we cant have jason, at least perhaps try to bring back some more of that crazy, awesome stuff. not just a light up pickle, but you know, the homemade highjinks we would have seen. the fighting lessons and parkour and whatnot. that stuff that actually drew my eye, and the editing to make it funny to boot. everything on the channel lately hasnt drawn me in personally whatsoever until this video, and maybe I missed some good stuff. but the draw in we had is missing and its not just because jason is gone.

Although a time machine isn't possible (yet), the sentiment behind wanting to go back rings true. I've subscribed to MR for many years, and the videos in a small barn, with a cool new guide or demonstration each week, felt very authentic. I feel that some of the soul of MR was lost over the past few years in the attempt to increase production value and scale. When in reality, all we needed was a couple of guys behind a tripod in a barn, discussing how to make mead. To me, the biggest selling point of MR was its brand. It felt like a club for like-minded individuals interested in the vision of being a “modern rogue” a distinguished gentleman, a cultured adventurer, a MacGyver, and an all-around worldly guy who knows things and how to do even more (without being a chooch). I am hopeful based on what you’ve said in this video. I feel you’re in a good position to reset and get MR back to its roots by doubling down on the brand of being a modern rogue. Although we may no longer have the chemistry between you and Jason, I fully believe you make this work by featuring great guests and engaging with the community (like this video). Don’t worry so much about perfection, have fun with it, that’s what we’re all here for. Best of luck for the future!

Oh btw Jason posted on Reddit and YT that he wasn’t getting paid properly and that’s a huge reason why he left but has since deleted them, it’s clear we are never going to get the full story and it honestly feels VERY similar to when the Game Grumps split.

Honestly there are two big sides of content I would like to see make a return. The first is the "sit down with an expert and learn about a topic" episodes like whisk(e)y, cigars, and the hacking stuff. For me this doesn't work with a "one host one expert" balance, you kinda need another 'inexperienced' person to bounce off of. The other side (that I think a lot of us miss lately) are the "we don't know what we're doing but we vaguely know what we want to make" stuff like the potato cannon, makeshift shelter, or (a personal favourite) the gas masks. THIS is what always felt like "modern rogue content" to me. I have loved this channel since its inception (hell, since before it WAS its own channel, found it through the first couple of episodes on the Scam School channel) and want to see it at its best. Past few months have been a bit off but I can tell things are going to get better. Last change this big was the whole compound move stuff, and I remember things being *slightly* rocky around then too.

I think honestly the one thing I miss from the older episodes is how badass and sketchy it felt, Like, prison food felt fun to learn and watch because it's something I can use (cooking(?)) but it feels like forbidden knowledge (prison) and most examples had a balance of those two things, or at least one of them in spades, (Taser cameras being cool, but unnecessary, how to make a cocktail being useful but not forbidden,) whereas some recent episodes feel like they slightly lack both of these things, like, realistically none of us are going to need to plug a pickle into mains voltage, nor would anyone want to?

What has been missing, I feel like, since Jason isn't on the videos anymore is the child-like messing around kind of videos. I think that it's worth considering that the revenue the channel makes is directly tied to how well the videos do; within the last year they've been averaging 20-60k views per video, but this is a 1M+ sub channel with millions more views. It stands to reason that jason was being paid a fraction of what he'd make at the channel's peak, and also that him saying so could be misconstrued as "yeah they were stealing my pay" rather than "we can't make ends meet because the channel got shafted, right after we bought a whole compound no less." I mean, even before that, they've been operating at a loss for how long now??

Reading some of the comments, I kinda agree with a lot of them. The show feels a bit more sterile lately. The appeal of early Rogue was two guys with amazing chemistry and reasonable comedy skills trying to do stuff they clearly had no business doing, sometimes with a teacher. I think when you just started reading out articles was pretty much the start of the decline, but the chemistry still held it together. You seem to have fallen into a trap that a lot of KZfaqrs do, which is a loss of genuine feel in return for greater production. And probably, honestly, a lot of that is going to be the outsourcing of material and scripts to new people, but there's also the definite degradation of the feel of authenticity, replaced by the feel of corporate dollar signs, that predicts my fall-off in viewership for so many KZfaq channels. And I'm not saying your videos have to look like shit, or be shot on a shoestring budget in your off time, but you are approaching, or have possibly already entered, the zone of "Well this should just be a TV show" without actually being a TV show. Some channels manage this by basically becoming generic play-to-the-masses dumbed-down ersatz TV shows, but the way this show is made would require a drastic shift to do that. You're in the uncanny valley of content. You aren't one thing, and you're not the other. If you're honestly trying to maintain the soul of your show, find a specific regular replacement for Jason, find a dedicated and specific writer so you maintain a voice, pare back the production a bit, and return to the crazy makeshift ideas that endeared you to everyone. Two idiots attempting to do something they shouldn't, or being taught something by an expert is far more interesting than a bunch of people who know what they're talking about having a discussion, or you just reading an article written by a dedicated researcher. I genuinely think you're either underplaying or not realizing how big of a loss Jason was. And while I wish him all the best, I find it kinda half-assed of you to finally promote his channel at a point where he hasn't posted anything in almost half a year. Presumably because he went from a channel he helped build from nothing to a major success to a channel starting at nothing that didn't seem to gain any traction, and lost his ability to dedicate time to it. The post where he described himself as "looking for jobs" is sad. I'm not sure why he left, but it genuinely seems like it wasn't a great idea for anyone involved.

It didn't seem like it was directly addressed in the video, and I just want to be clear on it; Did MR and Jason part on good terms? Brian did say they were pitching something together so that's a good sign, but I hope for a little more clarity on this. Thank you for making the video.

@@Mr_Zx Adam Savage always says they "weren't friends," which I think you can kinda see in some episodes, They certainly weren't making off the cuff jokes with each other for an hour, but they respected each other's work ethics enough to keep the show going for as long as the did, so I think "Hate" might be a strong word. But yeah, Jason and Brian seemed genuine together. which is were people get the "heart oof the show" thinking from. Jason was looking to push his creative juices in other directions. He'd been doing more writing, more Novels, more fascinating weird and gross stuff which is easily more his personal wheelhouse. Makes sense he'd want to step away to pursue more of it.

to me the heart of the modern rogue was always "Hey, here is this cool thing. let's learn, do, or talk about it" but the charm was it really felt like friends having a good time. I didn't care about the fake rocks, but the two of you talking and having a great time. now don't get me wrong, some stuff was really cool. But the heart was the friendship and banter among you guys while you recorded. I stopped watching after Jason left since there was an awkwardness with other hosts. Either forced friendly and/or felt like I was back in a middle school science presentation.

I’m glad this video finally got made, but at the same time it really felt like a lot of words were spoken, but not a lot was said. There was a lot of dancing around topics and blah-blahing issues. There was no talk of the financial issues he talked about on Great Night, nor anything around the reason why recent videos have been what they are (ie article reads and New York etiquette). It was just a lot of “we have plans”. I guess to try and help the channel, I’d recommend going back to what worked in older videos, such as discussing ciphers, cryptography, spycraft, improvised builds like the Pepper Hooray or Beelzeblaze, etc., not just reading articles or explaining the intricacies of NY bodegas. Go back to two middle aged guys just f-ing around and seeing what happened.

Thanks. Better late than never, I suppose. It does seem odd that you say you don't want to "engage in drama", but you seem to imply everything happened amicably so the only "drama" is the lack of transparency. Whether it's "we can't afford a host" or "we have disagreements too often" or "Jason doesn't actually enjoy filming anymore", it would all be fine, but *none* of that was said. Not even a "Jason is definitely gone and we're looking to replace him" or a "Life is getting between Jason and Modern Rogue, he'll be back if the stars align" would be nice. Either could help the audience give better feedback instead of just feeling hung out to dry. His absence also is probably more noticeable because of the general content shift. We're here rooting for you and if you can recapture that "adult kids hanging out in the garage" feel, it would be easier to accept. As of now, it feels like Jason was the fun one, and you just provided the channel. But I've seen your other projects; you know how to create fun too, it's just not coming across in these "read articles to the audience" videos. Perhaps you just need someone else to egg you on while talking to the "experts". Your new cohosts are working double time being both the second host and the expert. Perhaps you could get Cory back for a bit, or throw the camera on a tripod and put Brandt in front of the camera, or see if JRY would come sub in for a few episodes to get the mojo back. Heck, pull a scam school and use the channel as a business writeoff to try new things with one or more of your kids.

It’s a bloody shame that this all happened and I think the worst part is not being entirely open. It’s clear that something has been obfuscated, maybe because of peoples pride, but I think your viewers are intelligent enough to hear the truth (if that’s even clear to you at this point). There is various stories about financial issues, people not getting paid and it must’ve been really hard both on your stuff and your family. I think just a very crystal clear owning up to the audience would’ve gone a long way, instead of hinting at things dancing round subjects. It’s been Clear Brian for awhile that you have got something on your mind ,wearing heavily on you,as it’s leaking out around the edges. I’ve enjoyed your content for a long time and the dynamic between you and Jason was fantastic. It’s a shame that things came to an end but ultimately everything comes to an end. I hope one day we will get a guest appearance from Jason again and that the channel gets back to its feet and starts being insanely profitable for you like . Good luck and no hate 🫡

When i started watching Scam School, as it slowly grew up and out into Scam Nation, I jumped to MR because it felt like something big was coming. Something heartfelt. With Brian and jason, MR felt like what Mythbusters could have been if it was not run by a corp. And early shows showed that. Delving into History and finding badasses. Playing with chemicals and teaching what NOT to do. Learning Self Defense and Secret Codes. And most of all, having fun doing it. I NEVER would have clicked in if it felt like a syndicated TV show. I have no trust for those because they always end up changing something that brings it down, extending its life at the cost of its dignity. I LEANRED things watching this show. I felt like I was capable of being a rogue, in some small way. Now? The last video I can remember watching was Level 2: Advanced Tea Craft For Gentlemen. That was 2 years ago. I've stepped in and watched since then, but I cant REMEMBER any of them. None of them stuck with me at all. I wish Jason the best. I'm a rogue at heart. But idk what COULD be done that would bring back the magic that was old Modern Rogue. Also I just noticed the icon for the channel and I'm crying.

I didn't know what I would be interested in until I saw it done on MR.

What I would love to see more of is you being more of a co-host, for example your videos with Red Team Alliance. The videos when you bring in expert and we see your journey to understanding that topic. To me those were always the best episodes, seeing your epiphanies was at times hilarious and others it was even like a "hell yes" moment where the main character overcomes a great obstacle in a TV show. That and it's always fun to learn something new or find a new perspective on a given topic.

I wouldn’t say the heart was the chemistry between Brian and Jason specifically (even tho it was entertaining as all hell) but simply the chemistry between the people on camera. My favorite co-hosts have been the ones who didn’t take themselves too seriously and could joke around and have fun. People like Macaulay Culkin, Anthony, Trevor (after he got more comfortable being on camera), The Beerists, and so on. As long as they have that goofball energy, I don’t mind a rotating cast of co-hosts. As for things I’d like to see, I would love to see the doing and making random stuff type of episodes again like the mead or potato cannon stuff and especially the legally distinct Mythbusters stuff.

I hope going forward, when long form videos come back, we see more of the hand-made hijinks, and less than safe experiments. It felt like two dudes messing around with things that they shouldn't and trying to make something work. That was fun, that was what I came for. Suger and Saltpeter, a body in lye, homemade gas masks, improvised body armor. Those were the best episodes because it was two guys, clearly out if their depth, but learning by failing and kinda succeeding The most boring episodes were the ones where someone is just spewing facts you coulf find online. And I don't mean the ones where an actual expert comes (Whiskey, cigars, pipe smoking), because those come from people with actual practical experience in their craft. The boring episodes are the ones where they just sit around on set and start explaining things they found online

My big problem with MR shorts: I haven’t seen many of the videos that they’re from. And there hasn’t seemed to be any clear way to find the video many of them are from. So many times I’ve seen one and wanted to go directly to the video it’s from, found myself going directly to the MR channel… and just getting lost in the back catalog of videos unable to find it. I don’t know if there’s some way to add an easy link to, or at least a caption with the title of the full video onto the shorts. But man, I’d sure be watching more of the back catalog if either of those were the case.

The reason I watched much more in what I believe was late highschool early college for me was the feeeel of the show. Watching the show made me feel like a badass. I was attracted to the organized chaos. It felt very similar to Scam School and I believe there was another channel back in the day where things were on fire and weapons were happening but I was learning something (hacking too). What I want from the channel is less videos where you are just talking and it feels more like a podcast. I want more videos where you are DOING stuff and learning along the way. Similar to the videos you do with ryer. But one thing thats missing from those videos is the WHY. it's cool to know that I can make a bulb out of pickle or music from needles but what's missing is WHY or WHEN would a modern rogue use this knowledge. With Jason and the older videos there would always be a scenario told or implied where the knowledge could be used. (In my mind that was usually a post-apocalyptic or a dystopian world or a world where order has gone) I hope I was able to explain my issues with the newer videos. Looking forward to the newer vids

Obviously the chemistry with Jason will be missed, but outside of that, I really enjoyed the episodes where you explored and learned something useful and new. I found those to be really interesting and they ultimately pushed me to go try new things. My least favorite episodes where the ones where it felt like they were a 5 minute crafting episode. I also liked the Scam School format because I like magic and also videos on techniques to navigate social situations. I'm a huge fan of "World's Greatest Con" and I would love to see kind of a cross-over format where you explore some topics in the Modern Rogue style, but with a bit more of a documentary coverage layered on top. I appreciate all the hard work you've put into the channel, and I can only imagine how stressful it must be with the capricious whims of the algorithm as your funding mechanism.

The whole reason I watched Scam School on Rev3 was because I wanted to learn social engineering. When I subscribed to Modern Rogue, it was about how to take those interactions further. Making cocktails for friends, showing off my knowledge of ciphers and graffities, or learning some basic combat. I wish you'd get back to that. If I wanted to learn some basic science like making a pickle glow, I can watch Steve Spangler. If I wanted to learn about a guy farting on a cop and getting away with it, there's a million videos on KZfaq now. I want to learn what being a Gentleman, Warrior, Scoundrel is all about. I want to learn how to decode number stations, find bugs in my Air BnB, how to get free drinks at the bar, and if things go south I want to learn how to protect myself and get away unscathed. I don't mind if you only do one video a month, I just wish they were videos about the core beliefs, becoming a Gentleman, Warrior, Scoundrel. I love the idea of learning how to buy and dress in a suit. I'd also love to know about various cultures so I don't appear like a jackass when I travel, or how to present myself in a way where I have a higher chance of being accepted into a place I wouldn't normally belong. I remember when you told a hypothetical story about a hypothetical group of friends wanting to go to a bar, and one of those friends was hypothetically a year too young to legally drink. Maybe we skip the hypothetical crime, but I'd still love to know how to look and dress the part to be accepted into a fancy club or such.

The amazing chemistry you and Jason had on the show is part of it, but if you can find a good dynamic with another host, and go on making the adventurous, experimental videos with copious amounts of "What happens if you do this instead?" and "I'm sure it'll be fine...probably" situations, the channel will thrive. 🙂

Thank you for this. Hitting the balance between “gentleman, warrior, and scoundrel” has always been difficult. Now, I think we need more “scoundrel” into the mix. I feel like the recent trend of videos has been very much leaning towards being a gentleman, and before that there was a large wave of warrior videos. Looping back could be difficult, but I think with themes similar to discrete entry, subterfuge, and how to develop dexterous feats, we can loop back around.
