A VERY POPULAR TRADITIONAL GHANAIAN STREET FOOD | WEST AFRICAN FOOD | KENKEY IN ACCRA - GHANA

Kenkey originates for the Ga tribe of Ghana - West Africa. The Ga Tribe form a big part of the greater Accra Region within Ghana. This Ghanaian delicacy is made from fermented corn dough/meal. The corn dough is then cooked with water to form a sticky dough just like Banku (A Ghanaian dish)
More fresh corn dough is then added to the 'banku' to make kenkey, before molding and cooking further. You can buy this Ghana dish from most street food vendors in ghana. Love sharing these videos as it introduces you to how Ghanaians live and work together, hence giving you bits of the Ghanaian culture. Not only that, these modern conveniences that we currently use have been around only relatively recently (approximately 100-200 years). Man has been in existence much longer and this is pretty much how everyone around the world prepared their food, out in the open over a fire, often using the ground or perhaps a huge rock for a table. So this is all good and nothing new.

Most of the Ghanaian foods we buy on the street are very labour intensive, but it is sold for very small cost. It is the families they feed and help everyday that gives them joy and fulfilment to continue with their businesses. Once again thanks for giving this hardworking people an exposure.

This is a very intense, skilled, and hard work 😓. The Ga people call what she is doing “aflata”. After they mold it in the corn 🌽 husk and cook in bigger pots for hours allowing the steam to properly cook the kenkey. I am fortunate living here in Dallas,Texas , we have people who do it on large scale for sale and my mum prepares it at home fresh only for family consumption when we have need for it. Kudos to all the hard working women and men out there. Life they say is not easy. Life is tough everywhere. The determining factor is grit. Let’s see more stories. SKT In Focus

I'm a Ga girl who lives in Canada. My mom makes Kenkey at home. Making the "aflata" (the cooked dough) is a lot of work. I sometimes help my mom with it. I don't even know how this woman is able to make such a huge batch of aflata. She really did a great job.

My respect for you grows with each video you upload. The more I watch these videos, the more I wonder if it's not Jamaica. The cooking pot I'm also familiar with: we also use it for outdoor cooking and, coat it before with Ashes so, at the end we'll have a faster cleanup. The Baskets used in Ghana are also used in Jamaica. We call it "Bankra".

@@JasmineAmaa I wish I were there to try the real thing from Maku. The friends I spoke of are Ghanaians there. But, I suppose I might find it in an African Food store locally. You were in Texas at one time. So, you may recall that Mexican Tamales are also made using a seasoned corn flour (Masa) dough spread onto a corn husk then with ground meat added which gets folded up inside the corn husk and steamed. The drawback $10 to $12 per dozen (ouch!) Everybody loves Tamales! ❤️

2006, I had Kenkey for the first time in Washington DC from a Ghanaian family, at first bite I did not like the sour/ bitter taste, but a funny thing happened after the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th bite, I could not stop eating it, a matter of fact, I eat a whole one by myself, the family was in shocked, and laugh at me, but I did not care, my belly was full. I love that family to bits, they were the ones that gave me my Day name. great vlog, keep up the good work...Excellent!!

I'm from Guyana, where many of our ancestors trace their roots to Ghana. I'm sure you know the history. I remember eating a version of kenke as a child. It was sweet, made with cornmeal and coconut milk. Raisins were added as well. We would buy from kenke sellers as a smack after school. Its wonderful to see this. Can someone tell me if there's a sweet version in Ghana? O! Africa! My Africa!!

This is the main diet of the Ga people who live in and around Accra. This food is very healthy. There is a mystery to this food. The Accra people who eat this food are very strong. Many Ga people became World Boxing Champions and they are still many great boxers from these Accra people waiting to become World Champions. A few of these World renowned Boxing champions from Accra are D.K. Poison, Prof. Azuma Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey, Alfred Kotey , Joshua Clottey and a host of others who are on the threshold of emerging as World Champions. All these are boxers from the Ga tribe in Accra and have made their mark on the World stage in Boxing. I am of the firm conviction that there is something very good in this food: The Great Accra Kenkey.

I grew up in a village in Ghana. I stayed with my grandparents. I hated going to the farm on Saturdays when there was no school or when school was closed at the end of semester. Hated carrying foodstuffs from the farm to the house. An in and out journey of around 15 to 20 miles

There were komi factories, my grandma (born 1929) used to work in one. The ladies just moulded the komi into the corn husks, everything else was done by machine. This was during Nkrumah's presidency...

have you ever wonder why in Africa we eat a lot of Carbs but we don't put on weight is coz our cooking is labour intensive so when you eat that food and walking on the sun or doing the dishes and tidying up you already burn yr calories boz the food is not process its complex carbs....but now we are eating pizzas and fast foods......since i change my diet to mother nature diet i am fit and healthy. let go back to how our parents feed us with the good foods.

Aflata reminds me of FooFoo/FuFu. My daughters father is Nigerian and watching him make a pot of foo foo is like wow ! It's a lot of constant stirring and flipping of the dough.
