I too have found India Ink to be the ideal ebony dye. Folks have brought me their instruments with brown streaks or discolored spots in their ebony (or other wood) fretboards and India Ink does a perfect job of making it uniform. Personally, I like streaked ebony, but to each his own.

As a lefty, I always appreciate Ted working on lefty conversions or actual lefty guitars.

I've been watching Ted here for a couple years, and have gotten the guts to try some of my own small repairs. My biggest fix so far has been fixing a broken headstock for my nephews SG which has held up for over a year. Today, I bought a huge challenge... a 1983 Rickenbacker 4003 for $750. It is as bad as you thing. No pickups, bridge, tuners, nut. No idea whether tone or volume pots are good but they do turn and are intact. One truss rod missing the other needs to be replaced. Some of the binding on the neck is missing. The finish is a mess. I'm excited to try to get this poor fella playing again.

Every time I watch a guitar channel of any kind, I think about buying a guitar. But I already have enough things collecting dust. Nevertheless, I love guitars and guitar players. Thanks for another informative and entertaining video.

Watching you work, Ted, is an absolute joy. I can honestly say that, unlike another luthier in Tennessee whom I watch just for the sake of seeing his next "hold my beer" moment, I've never once cringed or wondered "what the hell is he thinking", when I watch your videos. Everything you do is methodical and well-thought out. Even though I'm in Idaho, I really wish I could send you my 2018 Les Paul Tribute for a proper setup, because you've set a bar to which no luthier can come close.

Wow that guitar would be perfect to play the score from the original movie Romeo and Juliet! It sounds like the stringed instruments from that time period.

Everytime you mention a parlor guitar, my mind subconciously drifts to that room in the Beverley Hillbillies' mansion... ("I'm out bah the Cee-ment Pond, Granny!")

The sound out of that at the end is awesome. Imagine if Randy Rhodes had lived and had that sound to do anything beyond yet in the vein of Diary of a madman... yes! I love it when little guitars punch above their weight with a compressed attack, makes a performance seem huge.

My Uncle told me that Fender bought Harmony because of the Regal name for the dobro. So they rename the Harmony Sovereign to the Regal Sovereign since the 1970s. I have the Harmony Sovereign of 1963 and I have a OM style Regal which I was looking to fixing it. It needs bracing due to the lack of bracing where it counts. Also, I'm working on a FG-180 red label Yamaha, Which has nothing to do with the Regal except I got those guitars at the same time as a low bidder and got them from a low bid on Ebay around 2002. They both have excellent tone and I'm looking forward to getting them done. Do some recordings with the 2 of them and resale them. Since I have my Uncle's instruments when he passed away in 2017 and other high end acoustic guitars I'm happy with them and I'm quiet content with what I have at home. I would like to sell a Martin D-15CE. All mahogany, no binding dreadnought cut away, (one of a kind) guitar with a wonderful tone, but not a loud guitar and my Uncle's is a dreadnought D28 and it's tone and volume is excellent except after watching several of your shows, I'm positive the neck and bridge is getting to the place where a reset will happen someday. His Luthier (at the time) did shave the bridge down, so if it changes more then I'll deal with that later. Right now the Martin is wonderful and sounds great and I have 2 other guitars that I own that are even better. When it comes to acoustic steel string guitars I'm set. Maybe that's why my wife said build electric guitars. Cheers!

Could the neck have been rebound? Or is it maybe the lights. The neck binding looks so clean.

You know, as an ambidextrous(my left has more dexterity) musician (I've been playing stringed instruments for over 60 years), I have never wanted a left conversion. I've always thought since my left has the most dexterity it was natural to use it to run the strings and my sorta useless right was more gifted at strumming, running a bow, tapping or finger picking. I've asked countless musicians why, as a right hander wouldn't you want to use that one to find the notes and chords? All I get are shrugs and I dunno. Maybe your viewers can weigh in with opinions?

Ironic that they don't do these fancy shaped pickguards anymore, since the vast majority is done by CNC machines these days. Meaning you can give it almost any fancy shape you want :)

As I have mentioned in the past, I have one of those old Regal parlor guitars that belonged to my grandpa, the headstock is broken off at the slots and someone tried to putty and screw it together. Shame.

As someone that has a collection and specializes in working on left handed guitars I can say I've never forgot that I'm working on a left handed guitar. Now right handed guitars... that's another matter. Ever string and set up a Floyd the wrong way?? Sheeesh!!

the pickguard had the opposite effect on me. it's a lump or some weird boot... doesn't surprise that it only lasted one model year. oh well, just my 2 cents.

Most of the time the cheaper fre tboard material on Harmony's (and Regal) is pearwood. Sometimes "roasted" I guess but also the black alcohol dye seems to contribute to the destruction of the structural integrity of the wood.

If it's a left-handed guitar, why doesn't it have a left-handed pickguard? The pickguard is of no use as it exists right now.

7:03 - How sharp is that knife? It's hard for me to imagine shaping ebony with a knife like that. He must spend hours each day sharpening something or other.
