A Very Silly Overnight Trip Over Mt Passaconaway and Square Ledge | Hiking the White Mountains of NH

Took a weird hike in the Sandwich Range around the Mt Passaconaway & Square Ledge. It was a real mishmash of trails that I wouldn't really suggest anyone else really bother duplicating. I only did it to knock out the whole section I in between Passaconaway and Paugus for redlining purposes.
See the video for a more detailed map but started at the Ferncroft parking area went up the Kelley Trail, briefly west on the Lawrence Trail to the Cabin Trail intersection, back tracked back down, proceeded a mile down the Oliverian Brook Trail, then up the Square Ledge Branch Trail. Then the Square Ledge Branch trail to Square Ledge Trail to the Walden Trail. Dicey's Mill Trail up Passaconaway, Walden Trail on the way down. Followed the Walden Trail back about 2 miles until it intecepted the Square Ledge Trail again. Went about 1.1 miles down the Square Ledge Trail to the same intersection with the Square Ledge Branch Trail, then back tracked the 1.1 back the Square Ledge Trail (Confusing yet? Have you stopped reading? I know I would have) went .3 west back on the Lawrence Trail, back to the Kelley Trail back to my car.
It was a solid hike. About 14 miles and 4750ft of elevation. Decent views. Interesting weather.

During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. Ya I came out of the woods at about 3:30-4? And I have a feeling the predicted rain kept a lot of people away on Sunday. I pulled into the lot Saturday morning at almost 6am first car in. And then it was like a barrage of people right behind me haha

Dang, Chris! You still put together beautiful videos! I say “still”, as I subscribed a few years ago, when retiring from both a military, and federal wildlife officer career, I was preparing, and training to do an AT Thru-hike. I didn’t last the AT….and why? Not for “want” of trying….and preparation, but mainly a combination of back injury from an old Navy aircraft accident that occurred in the late 1970s flaring up, and I found the AT to be a combination “Petri dish of bacteria meets Frat Party”. Turned out, that after 30 years in natural resource law enforcement, my patience for foolishness, collegiate partying, filth, and a general disregard for “rules” and common courtesy, wasn’t worth continuing….as I just didn’t find it “fun”. Now, I Section hike the AT, mostly when “others” aren’t out there. (Wish I could get my Australian Shepherd hiking buddy, to calm down enough to sleep in a tent…but alas!). Anyway, Chris….your AT videos were a great help….I always enjoyed them. Now, I day hike daily from my home in western Massachusetts, with my dog (I love her enthusiasm and energy!), and I do two-three day over-nighters. And planning some distance bikepacking rides. I wish you well, Chris…..and Bravo-Zulu, on producing an absolutely gorgeous and relaxing video, amigo!

I love that section where there is small stream where you guys like the walls and moss. Don't know if it's still ther, but there's a large flat slab over the stream. Nice little natural bridge.

Hi Chris, Enjoyable video as always. This is not to be critical in any way, just some questions about food. When you're at a stealth site, how do you store your food? Also, do you have any concerns about cooking and resulting food smells next to your tent? Finally, how do you clean that pot you cooked in? Thanks! P.S. I'm glad you're telling us what trails you were on. I have climbed Passaconaway and Whiteface in the recent past, so it's good to see which trails I was and wasn't on. I took the Tom Wiggen connector trail descending from Whiteface and despite its ominous "not recommended" warning by the Wonolancet Club, it was far easier than many other White Mountains trails I've done this year. P.P.S. There's nothing "silly" about roaming around the Whites!

You can typically still find spots to hang it. I have never been particularly worried about food smells from cooking near tent. But if really worried you could cook before hitting camp. As far as cleaning pot goes i typically dont, i may heat a little bit of water and swish it around / drink it, or just leave it until I make something else the next meal

Good thing that water was running. The worst thing is to run out of water. Aha! Did I detect you making Stovetop Stuffing? LOL My favorite trail food!!! Do you clean your pot with dirt? Crazy question but it works. If I eat lasagna with all the cheese stuck in the pot, I use dirt and it cleans it like sandpaper. You brush it around and then dump it out and use more dirt and repeat until sparkling clean. The dirt just falls out and the pot is clean. Great editing. Thanks for this video. Enjoyed it a lot. Yup have a bunch of boxes I picked up around Thanksgiving last year on the cheap. Figure about time to use them. For cleaning anything pot wise I just heat up a little bit of water and swish it around inside the pot then drink the leftovers.

If you hang your food or use a bear canister (or something else), could you share that process in a future video? im still on the bear hang train. Though the thought of an ursack or bear can has come to mind. I feel like at some point with how popular hiking is becoming bear cans are going to end up required for overnight stuff. Did you do this a couple days ago? If so we just missed you. We came up the oliverian brook trail from the kanc to that 4 way intersection. Last year we did the square ledge trail and Passaconaway loop. Nice quiet but challenging loop

Just did a similar route in that area back in June...did the Kelley to Lawrence then to the summit of Passaconaway and then down the Dicey Mill. Great day hike and that hike down to the look out off the summit was worth it since it was bluebird that day and you can see all the summits to the north.
