The too often overlooked Birmingham to Hereford Mainline holds massive variety, from the dense urban core of Birmingham, to the leafy suburbs of Barnt Green, from the Cathedral City of Worcester, to the rural hills of Herefordshire. And with such a fascinating line, there are many unusual little pieces of information, sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, but almost always interesting. So let's take a look at the Titbits of this very important little mainline.

The disused rail tunnel under the Malvern hills was re-purposed to store art pieces during the second world war. Cafe Loco at Worcester Foregate Street is in a converted signal box at the end of one platform. I personally think the view down the Severn just West of Foregate Street, with the river, cathedral, bridges, town and so much more is one of the greatest from a train anywhere in Britain and you captured it well.

The number of single line sections, including the two single lines through Worcester Foregate Street that were created in the 1970s, pose all sorts of challenges for operators on this line. When a delay occurs it usually cascades & escalates. GWR has recently cut the Great Malvern to Gloucester/Bristol services (these now start at Worcester Shrub Hill). This has freed up some paths, but GWR and West Midlands services still get delayed on a regular basis. Amazing to think that Cardiff to Birmingham services were able to use this route until 1969.

6:09 I recognise this quote from a video Tom Scott did. It is a a long-term nuclear waste warning message, to tell civilisations to come to not dig up nuclear waste located nearby. Not sure why it is there.

Very interesting. No idea why it is there, unless the government decided to bury nuclear waste under central Worcester.

At Kings Norton there is a junction with the Camp Hill line, which is, in effect, a City avoiding line, mainly used for freight at present, although it is planned to acquire a few new stations and a new chord line to allow new services from the south round that way into B’ham that way. The image at 4:27 is somewhat out of date, as it’s electrified now - although your Bromsgrove clip does show it at the other end. Currently the end of the line for electrics.

The image was the best one available to show the extent of the incline, though I really ought to have used a more modern photo I have showing it from the base with the wires, sorry. The Camp Hill line would have been a good mention, it's an interesting link.

Just before the Malvern wells station the railway branched off to Tewkesbury through Upton. The original railway tunnel under the Malverns was disused and they recently wanted to reopen it as a cycle path tunnel but there are bats in there so it’ll never happen now. Colwall is the least used station in Worcestershire. The Ledbury branch originally went through the town and there used to be another station in the town centre. The bridge which used to carry the branch is just outside the station and is incredibly well designed as it crosses the bridge at a diagonal so they had to get very creative with their brickwork. That branch originally went to Gloucester and most of the original route is intact and was originally a canal, they want to restore it to a canal and have a canal running through a railway station in Newent!

A canal would be lovely - but Colwall is in Herefordshire not Worcestershire!

Five Ways - Granville Street goods tunnel (disused) branches off near here and you can see the old track bed alongside the southbound platform. Would love to take a look one day as it's still in situ but obviously locked off.

I commute to kings norton on the cross city line. One of the old platforms has been electrified too, though it used to be for the camp hill line (being rebuilt i think) and not fast trains. It's is really interesting lmao, keep it up man.

The Camp Hill line should use 196s when it reopens - was it previously electrified?

I have a fact about Northfield, the northbound lines and the southbound lines split in 2 leaving a gap in the middle where there is a large block in between and I know that just from playing train sim world 3

I think you have merged multiple lines including the Cross Country Line and the Welsh Mash Line and someothers.
@GWVillager
@GWVillager Жыл бұрын
Certainly not the Marches Line, but yeah I’ve merged several sections of several lines. I think including the Malverns line as part of the Cotswolds doesn’t really hold up anymore, considering how few trains run past Malvern from it.
