It is worth noting that while the producers and casting agents cast relatively older henchmen - evidently to credibly match against Moore and, for that matter, Macnee - they did not do so for the, um, companions of Moore, thus accentuating the visibly advanced age of him.

It’s funny that Sir Roger was considered to be to old at 57 to play a Spy. Daniel Was 53 in last movie and Tom Cruise is 60 and still playing Ethan Hunt. Things change.

I really liked A View to a Kill when it came out. I listened to the record of the soundtrack daily and fantasized looking at the cover painting. The only annoyance was Stacey constantly screaming "James, James, help me." Her screaming sounds annoying in German and in English. Even my mom shouted at the screen "shut up, stop screaming" (in German). lol

Roger Moore’s age in A View To A Kill doesn't bother me as much as most people nor does his obvious stunt doubles. I don't know why it bothers most people I guess I just don't pay attention to those things or I'm just a big Moore fan (he is my favourite Bond) so I'm more forgiving of it

You had a 30 minute video back in the day where you constantly said “Oh Roger!” I remember that one.

AVTAK was on TV last weekend and its very memeable. Great fun, cast and an excellent John Barry score, for all its shortcomings.

Look at Harrison Ford. Look at Ian McKellen. Look at Patrick Stewart. Look at Christopher Lee. Look at Charles Dance. All acting/acted up until their twilight years and still major box office draws. Age is irrelevant. What does matter however is EXECUTION - and I maintain that ''A View To A Kill's'' was terrible. They seemed to be ignoring Moore's age as opposed to embracing it. An aged James Bond fighting a younger man in a digital world (by 80s standards) should have been a blast. They were just too scared to break formula and it cost them.

It's all subjective, but I would say "Live and Let Die" is the weirdest of the lot. Exploitation? Voodoo? Whatever was going on with the Scooby-Doo-rubber-mask plot point?

Different times, different atmospherics as well. I wish I looked like Roger at 58. It's not the best film but it's OK. Sean, Roger and Piece are my best actors for Bond.

I think the first act of AVTAK is pretty solid. The second and third acts are where it falls apart, but I'm very entertained by it. There's plenty of memorable elements in it. The score and title song by Duran Duran are excellent.

I enjoyed watching A view to a kill

The wife suggested that we watch A View to a Kill just this afternoon. It’s a fun final romp with Roger and Walken is a hoot as Zorin. Not the best Bond film, but it kept me entertained for two hours.

I actually like the cheesier 007 entries like Diamonds are Forever and View to a Kill. AVTAK was my first Bond I saw in theatres and it was great fun and reflected the times in a way that few Bond films did. It's hard to believe that Licence to Kill would follow just four years later from the same director.

Absolutely, bloody hilarious. I'm really pleased that you plan to keep young Calvin coming. He's brilliant, and yes, he's pretty accurate with the review of the film. As much as I'm a massive Roger Moore fan, it was probably one film too many, but he still plays 007 with his usual charm and humour, and his partnership with Patrick Macnee was great. I’ve been thinking since the Bond films from the 80s are rather polarizing, I feel that if you combined the classic spy thriller feel of For Your Eyes Only, the Cold War aspect of Octopussy, the eccentric villains of A View To A Kill, and the hard gritty action of The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, that could be a top tier Bond film, whether it started either Roger Moore or Timothy Dalton

Apart from the stupid Beach Boys bit, the score for the movie is really good, imho. Also, Chris Walken and Grace Jones might have been weird casting choices, but they both nailed the roles. Blimey...Fiona Fullerton was 29 when she played Pola Ivanova....so...only just shy of half Roger Moore's age at the time.....

Honestly view to a kill has always been one of my favorites

I really like A View To A Kill. I’d much rather watch this movie on a rainy Sunday afternoon over a movie like Spectre or even No Time To Die.

The one guy is not a sheriff. He is a San Francisco city police officer. Sheriffs work for counties (or in the case of J.W. Pepper for a parish), not cities. Sorry to be pedantic.

Although a couple of films before his final role, I think the Cary Grant comparison would be more apt if we consider Charade rather than Walk Don't Run, a film where he very much plays into the idea of 'I'm too old to be sleeping with young women' only for Audrey Hepburn's character to be the one who ends up pursuing a relationship with him. It really makes the relationship feel far less frivolous when they get together at the end of the film. Could have been an interesting route for A View to a Kill to have gone down, rather than seemingly trying to pretend Moore was still the same age he was in Live and Let Die.

I've been onboard from the first year and it's been a fun ride. Loved your early work, but after you had finished reviewing all the existing films I thought your channel had reached it's ending, but was pleasantly surprised since with the good work you've done. Great video Calvin. I really dig A View To A Kill and still watch it regularly. The music is excellent. I would put it in my top 5 Mr Bond films.

To be fair to yourself, I think Roger Moor thought he was too old to play Bond at that point too. I think VTAK is one of my favorites because it's so weird. The show stealer is the french cab driver: Oh! My Caa!

This must be an earlier/different edit than I remember. I seem to recall you reacting to the Beach Boys by saying "I'll even say Denise Richards is the most credible Bond girl of all time"...Unless I'm thinking of a different review.

This movie could have been improved if the writers had given the storyline more of a retirement element.

Its great I think that rather than us all being crazy and angry at a film like we all were back in the day, we've learnt to try and understand why a film is the way it is and not for what its not. AVTAK was very beloved from my family and 4 older brothers because it was the only Bond movie we had recorded on VHS back in the late 80's and early 90's because official VHS tapes were expensive and scarce in North Cymru (Wales) so you were stuck with what you had. This film particularly does have a cult following and their enjoyment of the film will never go away! many I know have the Zorin logo as a T shirt :) 1:59 haha thats interesting because I knew almost no one who liked Dalton or his movies (particulary LTK) back in the day!!! The lesson is, we can all learn from each other and share our favourites and memories graciously! Ive learnt alot from you to re appreciate the surreal and whacky side of Bond movies again and enjoy Die Another Day as is :) So lets all us Bond fans not be an UZI machine gunning Mad Max Zorin and put aside our Bond Fan Police badge and celebrate our personal favourites and AVTAK over some Quiche, Red Wine and Cheese and Crackers ;) All the best Chap

I love this film but do agree there are some weird choices. I love the beach boys track as Bond one-ski surfs. Dr Carl Mortner always reminded of of Patrick Moore

Interesting fact: Roger Moore had two sexual relationship with black woman. First time in the first movie(LALD 1973, Rosie Carver) and second time in the last movie(AVTAK 1985, May Day). *** Now, I must say I really-really like AVTAK(1985)! Not so much in the past, but now I really appreciate this movie! Probably the most nostalgic Bond movie ever! Not the best, but very nostalgic! It's sooooooo 1985! I was 12 years old! And I remember loving both movies: AVTAK(1985) and TLD(1987)! So, the more serious approach of Timothy Dalton/TLD was not a problem for me. Actually, AVTAK was quite serious too. Much more serious than TSWLM(1977) and Moonraker(1979)! By the way, I adore TSWLM and Moonraker! The absolute highlight of Roger Moore! I really love this movie. I have quite a few nice signed AVTAK signed prices and a view to a kill duvet cover (I’m 45).

I think Christopher Walken & Grace Jones were perfect in their roles. I wish Patrick McNee was really good as well. He was the 4th actor from The Avengers to be in a Bond movie. Although Joanna Lumley was actually in a Bond movie before she co-starred with McNee in what was technically a reboot. The movie wasn't the best, or the worst. It did have it's weak points, the biggest, that Roger Moore was definitely showing his age.

AVTAK is not one of the best Bond films but like all of Roger Moore's Bond movies it is sure entertaining.

I think I commented on the original video and I am still maintain. You had to be there at the time to appreciate the beach boys song… The Beach boys were having a Renaissance in the early 80s. I actually had a come back… When I was in the theater and that song came on, it was met with laughter, and then applause.

David Bowie and Sting were approached to play Zorin, and Grace Jones was cast to appeal to 'the kids'. Duran Duran hired to do the song. Do you think that maybe this explains the weird choices in the film, attempts by an older crew to reach a market a generation or more behind them?

As much as I agree that Moore was way too old to play Bond in A View to a Kill, I still think that he's terrific in the film and I don't think that it would be right if they got anyone else to play Bond for the film. Had to laugh during the behind the scenes documentary when John Glen said that he thought Roger could've done two more films, which I think would've gone way too far.

I was extremely surprised at how restrained the reaction to the elevator scene was, guess more time needed to be allocated to reacting to the weird sex scenes in this film. I think this film has gradually been climbing my list of favourites just because of how...unusual it is. I was also pretty surprised at how little swearing was in the old video

I really do enjoy watching you as a mature, gracious young man capable of articulating nuanced opinions and being as fair as possible to all parties involved overwrite this excessively critical young punk.

I've always loved A View to a Kill and found it one of the most underrated Bonds. Like Modern Day Calvin would state, I'd find the movie a lot better if Bond's age was part of the story instead of ignored; that you contrast the sharpness of the 80's via technology and the popularity of Grace Jones and Walken, against the outdated older Moore, and then you have Tanya's romance become paternal... it would work. But how much is awesome? Moore always commits to his version of Bond. May Day is memorable and her face turn is handled well. McNee is charming. The fight on the bridge is great. Walken is one of the best villains EVER. And the theme tune and Maurice Binder video is legendary. Ultimately there's so much good to it.

This was my first Bond film and neck and neck with The Living Daylights for best Bond score.

While I know A View to a Kill isn’t good, it was one of my first Bond films cause of ABC movie of the week growing up. I have a ton of affection for it. Also, Calvin, you are aging like fine wine my man. Older isn’t always worse.

A View To A Kill has grown on me over time... I used to really not like it, but after awhile, I've started to really like this Goldfinger remake... I don't really focus on Moore's age, although it's quite apparent when he's fighting or making love that he's too old to be doing such things. The villains are very memorable and do a good job of being properly menacing... Let's not talk about the Bond girl...

I will eternally defend View to a Kill for having great ideas and an amazing villain. Same goes for Diamonds are Forever and The Man with the Golden Gun.

To truly understand A View to a Kill, one must put oneself back in 1984, when MTV and music videos were at the apogee of that pop phenomenon. It was a time when Madonna became a superstar, when Michael Jackson was bigger than anyone, when Bruce Springsteen peaked, and bands like Duran Duran were the hippest thing around. This was the era of Prince, Live Aid, Bananarama, Max Headroom, mullet haircuts, Miami Vice, ...the mid-80s was a really bright, explosive, colorful Pop culture time. If you were a teenager in the 80s, you instinctively get View to a Kill immediately and probably have always been a fan. But for those who weren't dying their hair in the 80s, watching MTV round the clock, wearing those rubber bangle bracelets, View to a Kill doesn't resonate with you. Just the idea to cast David Bowie and Grace Jones literally screams MTV generation and 1984. You have to see this film through that lens. View to a Kill was super hip, cool and trendy when it was released in the summer of 1985 (or at least it very much tried to be). I embrace this film and always have. There are so many worse Bond films than View. At least A View to a Kill doesn't kill Bond at the end of the movie. Nuff said.

It always seemed like The Beach Boys song was there because he was 'surfng'... but on the snow?

Funnily enough this film is one I come back to periodically, once you reset your expectations there is more of a guilty pleasure to be had (of course there is room for a 'James Bond on the verge of retirement' film to be done and this is not it, and it hasn't really been done, though perhaps 'For Your Eyes Only' is the closest so far in the franchise?).

I love A View to a Kill with every bit of my soul but it is as close to an actual guilty pleasures as Bond ever got. I have to say that the latest Indiana Jones film gave me a whole new (serious) level of appreciation for it though: whereas Indy V to me felt dragged down by self-seriousness and self-consciousness over the age of its protagonist, AVTAK tried to make up for it by embracing the whole wackiness of the thing, hence the casting of Walken and Grace Jones. It’s especially apparent during both films’ final act, which are very similar - except that it’s Indiana Jones trapped in the Heinkel and in need of rescue, and not the girl… Modern Hollywood gotta Modern Hollywood, I guess.

It's an oddball film with a lot of charm. The first half has Moore behaving like a wooden puppet, as if he's got stage fright; then he opens up in the second half and goes for broke. The film veers off on various tangents which I think are quite endearing. The vehicle chase in which Bond's car gets progressively reduced by halves is ridiculous. There are plenty of horsey shenanigans. The scene in which the stable converts into a laboratory is mind boggling and I found Patrick McNee's death genuinely upsetting. Christopher Walken is astonishing - when he's on the screen, I can't take my eyes off him. Plus, he has personality. Of all the Bond villains, I thought his character was the most terrifying, especially when he opened fire on his own employees. Oh, and there is a great title song from the brilliant Duran Duran. What's not to like?

First Bond film I saw in a theater. Some of Calvin's comments are word for word what I remember Siskel and Ebert saying about the film when it debuted. I'll say that Roger Moore looked much better at 57 than I did at 57 (now 59). I've read Roger Moore actually wanted to do The Living Daylights at the last minute because he disliked the way AVTAK turned out and wanted to end his Bond career with a better film. I like the film itself and have a soft spot for Bond film where much of the action occurs in the U.S.

Art could have peaked that year if we'd had a John Gardner novelisation, maybe with an audio book read by a chalkboard. Shame.

I have to admit, this is my least favourite entry in the whole franchise.

I saw this one at the cinema with my dad when i was 16 and I just feel that this was one Roger Moore Bond too many - if this had been cast with Timothy Dalton we might have had something to write home about - obviously we would have had to get rid of Tanya Roberts but I'm sure we could have found someone with a little more spark (Fiona Fullerton might have been better placed for this rather than the bit part she actually gets)! Don't get me wrong I love the Avengers and The Saint, but not in the same movie and not having to suspend my disbelief so much that I could honestly believe that Britain's security rests in such 'doddering' hands!

I think it would be really cool if you reacted to your old review of the 1967 Casino Royale. I can remember very little about it except for the last two minutes when youre stripping yourself half-naked swearing your head off. Would be worth it for a laugh!
