This person seems like the kind of musician who is so audio obsessed that they get distracted for 10minutes by everything they touch seeing what noises they can make. You'll catch them one day at 4:00 am in the parking lot recording two car alarms that are harmonising and reverberating in a way that just really worked for them.

I don't even consider myself much of a musician but that sounds exactly like me and now I'm wondering if I should start learning about various instruments and their construction and mechanics so I can make my own out of, like, scrap wood/metal or something. In all seriousness, if you give me a musical instrument or even just something that makes nice noises, I'll probably be occupied for at least a few hours just messing around, trying to figure out the sound parameters (not sure if that's the right word just sounded right to me), if not, like, a week. I'm starting to wonder if that's why I'm so unnecessarily long-winded when I'm typing things out on a computer - that is, if I just really like to listen to myself type? It might explain a lot.

I thought that the vietnamese mouth violin was like a violin with wah wah pedal but from the first video it's more like a talk box or vocoder because he player is actually vocalizing words and almost singing. Amazing sounds!

I use a similar technique to transfer sound from a wind string instrument to a resonator. I figured out the high tec version: Use kevlar or dynema for the sound transfer. The sound will be much louder with more overtones, the energy loss is reduced due to the non flexing of those high tec strings. :-)
@KingfisherTalkingPictures

@@NicolasBras I try to get one. This is a installation I made for a friend some years ago. See my next post for a closer idee what we did.
@hesspet
@hesspet 3 жыл бұрын
@@KingfisherTalkingPictures Oh, it's a a long wooden blank aprox. 2-3 m and a string is mounted. And it is placed on the side of a house. On stormy days the wind made the string to vibrate. The wind has to do the same job like the bow. This installation was placed near by the shore. And the sound should be transfered into a house through a existing hole in the wall without the use of electricity (It was a summer house not connected to the mains). So we used a string to transfer the sound in a similar way like Nicolas shown here. We used a tin can as "receiver/resonator" (in fact it's nothing more than on side of those string telefones we build as kids). Due to the harsh weather, we needed a weather proof material. So we came up with some strings for stunt kites we used on the beach. First we used some natural string material after the replacement the sound was much louder and with more overtones. Sorry for my poor english. I hope this was understandable.

It´s pretty wild that this is pretty much the same idea as a talk box, transmitting sound in to the mouth and using it as a sort of filter. I even bet you could mouth words with your mouth and get something that resembles speech with it as well. So cool!

Great. I knew this instrument and it is available in internet, but your fretted one is far better than the original folklore instrument. Thanks for that. SUGGESTION: the indonesian pin pia is a great instrument with 2 or more strings it has an etherical sound based on a special flageolet-plucking technique and is nearly impossible to get in europe. Maybe you could give it a try? Would be great. Merci.

So wild. In the videos from Vietnam it almost sounds to me like the people playing it are talking or articulating additional sounds using the mouth part? Have you experimented with trying any mouth shapes besides open and close? You like to beat box so that could be a really cool aspect of this.
@NicolasBras
@NicolasBras 3 жыл бұрын
It is hard to articulate actual words, there is a lot of possible variations, but speaking is hard! The first man on the video can really speak, it is impressive. I have a theory that vietnamese is better than english or french to articulate on instruments, because of the single phonemes with a lot of consonants, and that could be why they have a lot of speaking instruments, the a'reng, the dan moi, the dan k'ni...maybe it is 100% wrong but I like this theory!

Hello Nicolas ! I'm very enthusiastic about all you build, experiment, and play... well ! But there's one thing wich would be awesome if it could be 100% DIY is the tuning peg. How to make it reliable, without complexe machinery (metal gear) nor subtitle knowledge (violin peg) ? Maybe any screw with a big nut (écrou papillon), washers and counternut, but not that simple. [By the way If you have a shop you could sell 'universal' tuning pegs per dozens, cheap but good models, strings for each applications, with possible extreme lengths, affordable bows (or horse hairs + collophane!), etc... everything which is difficult to make DIY. Though it's great to build as much as possible]
