Ft. Steuben Mall. I wasn't the biggest fan of this mall, but it holds a much larger issue from day one that will plague this mall until it comes down. Join me as I rip a bit into this mall.

To answer your question about the buckling floors, back before the mall was built coal miners dug mine shafts throughout the property land. Years later when the mall was being built, some of those shafts were filled with sand and others were not. Therefore when the Goodman company built, it was only a matter of time before the land started to settle. This caused years of heartache for the tenants. I was one of those tenants back in the late 80’s. The mall continued to decline year after year. The Wintersville/Steubenville residents started shopping in Pittsburgh and the snowball effect started. Steubenville had never been the same since. Reminiscing about the good all days is all we have left

I really enjoyed your videos. So am currently 43 and live in Seattle area but grew up in the Ohio Valley and know this mall well. And the Ohio Valley even better. Thank you for your video as it was a nice trip down memory lane. Sad truth is I remember this mall in its prime. And it being one of the better looking malls I have ever seen. The mall was host to earth tones. Gray and Brown glossy tile work. There was a lot of elegant stone work on the walls. The main center area with the sky light had the coolest water fountains I ever seen. I have pictures of this. It had wood planter boxes surrounding the fountain leading to Kauffmans. Part of the fountain had stained wood rails with black iron posts. Fountain had 3 main vertical jets middle one shot up to 5 feet from the top peak of the sky light. And on both sides under the hand rails where at lease 3 water jets aimed at 45 degrees toward the center. Fountain had many lights of different colors. And would slowly shift the colors around. There was a second fountain with a water fall feature. I remember that it had a part you walked over with the water running underneath. The hallways in this mall always felt like the ceilings where low. On a side note the Ohio Valley mall also had some great fountains. But in the case of both it seemed that no one would take care of it. And people often threw cigarets and cigars in. You would always see them floating. As time went on. The main fountain lost pressure. It was half of what it was. But the trees in the planter got taller and it was a nice place to be for while. But more people always went to Ohio Valley Mall

All malls have the massage chairs, gum drop machines, small rides for small kids, on and on. I think the business of owning those machines and paying rent on a shrinking number of visitors must hurt.

This mall is one of those malls that really confused me when I came here. Unfortunately while I have been here in the past, I don’t think I’m gonna return to this mall due to experiences that my Friends have had here, also due to the fact that this mall is honestly just very bland in general. Not to add with the buckling floor, and the strict security in this mall because Kohan, with me having to severely hide my camera when I tried to film here, the video turned out pretty shaky because of it. I was hoping for something a little bit more exciting than this, and when I went on my trip to here, I went in New Towne Mall in New Philadelphia before this, and thought that mall was a lot more pleasing and deserved better in terms of the video for my channel. But keep up your great work, your roast videos are fantastic.

I was here Friday. Upon entering you could smell must and mold. The floor is extremely bad with it buckling. There’s an abandoned Chi-Chi’s outside of the mall next to JCPenney.

I like this format, very nice. You have a very pleasant voice, so peaceful and full of details about a mall your visiting. Traveling around Pennsylvania, West Virginia, western Virginia, etc, I have seen where they have build big box stores, etc on former slag heaps or cut off the top of a mountains to build like this. Getting to the mall or large box store requires a drive up and up a roadway to get to the parking lot. I realize they land would be more valuable doing this and the area is pretty hilly. But of course the buildings aren't built to last forever!

I was at this mall this past Saturday. It's amazing how much worse it has gotten since you posted this video. This mall has been almost a ghost town for years. Now, it was eery walking through there. How are the justifying keeping the doors open at all?

it's crazy to see how fast this mall is deteriorating. I grew up there and moved away five years ago so it's been awhile since I've been there and seeing this is crazy. I didn't realize how bad the floors were, I guess growing up in the area you're just already used to walking up a slight incline lol

It’s since been sold to a company back in February of 2022 and then auctioned off in an online auction in May of 2022. The news hasn’t reported if it was sold and who now owns it. The previous group got several small name shops to sign a lease with a few months free rent and lock them in to a lease for several years. They came in got more stores to fill spaces so they could flip it for a profit. The floors are even worse and the parking lot is nasty too. They still have a carnival in the parking lot going on now as I wrote this. This mall is just a ghost of itself. So very sad…

There used to be a Long John Silvers inside the mall. There used to be more stores open when I first moved to Steubenville in 2009. There was a Sears at one end of the mall, and Macys was in the anchor store closer to the middle of the mall.

I liked your style of a walk through commentary of our Fort Steuben Mall. I even held 3 jobs there way back in the 70's. All I remember the most is the complaints about the high rent and that's when all the stores started disappearing. No one would stay long. It would be really nice if some business had interest to do something with it, either restore or rebuild since the space is there. We really need the stores and restaurants and shoe repair (if there is any left out there!) You mentioned the fountain, it really was pretty, and with the sky windows above it :)

Nothing sadder than a Walmart anchor at a mall…except maybe a Hobby Lobby. Omg wait is that an Aaron’s in a mall? Fuck that is depressing.

I noticed you really edited the beginning of this video and your previous video. I actually prefer the longer buildup with the music at the start of the videos, as it gives me the feel I am really driving to the mall. I do think your videos with a 13:01 length are many of your better ones, as they have a nicer flow, rhythm, pace, and narration.

Just found this video. If you need any information on this mall, DM me. I was born and raised around that area and moved out of there in 2010, but still visit from time to time. I can tell you anything about that mall between the late 90's to now. Such as what stores used to be where, Walmart and surrounding buildings, etc.

i don't mind your stile of commentary in this video you are just giving your honest opinions.it was stupid to build on top of a slag dump.where was the local planning board to make sure the goodman company were to build it properly?plus while the carpet gives the mall a sterile look & feel if the carpet was there since the mall opened then that tells me that the goodman company knew since the beginning that the floors warping would be an issue.cohen should of never took this property over.

Some history on the mall: Carlisle’s was in a now demolished east wing of the mall where Walmart was built in 2001. It was a beautiful wing with a fountain and greenery around. Sometime before that, JCPenney replaced Carlisle’s as the third anchor and sat in its original location. Sears was located in the current JCPenney’s location and they demolished it to build the new store. The massive abandoned Sears was also built around 2001, and is now being renovated into a “Dave and Busters” type of establishment. GNC has closed, and Hibbett’s has moved out of the mall. Three additional stores and a radio station have opened as of 2021. I work in the mall currently and their security is so incredibly uptight, I’m shocked you got this footage! Great video. Hope this info will fill on some gaps from this once beautiful mall.

I worked at the Aladdin's Castle which was in the back across from the Cinema. In its prime it was always packed . I honestly think the end of Malls in general was when they clogged the hallways with perfume centers and all the other "shops" they put in. Before then they would have Car RV and other trade shows in those spots that would always draw people to the Mall.

First mall I ever went to as a kid in early 70’s. You should be able to look at building permits and business licenses to get the history. When it opened it had a Sears at one end, and Kaufmans was the other anchor. It had the usual 70’s mall stores….National Records, GNC, a music store, etc…
