The Mall at St. Matthew's may just be the finest mall Kentucky has to offer, boasting a broad mix of strong tenants and great architecture.

What St. Matthews and Oxmoor have going for them is having 1) the same owner/management company and 2) different offerings. In many ways, they are not in competition with one another. Each serves its own purpose.

I can remember as late as the early 90s the Mall in St Matthews was on the decline. So it's a shock for me to see it's since then had a major architectural makeover. It seemed that Oxmoor Center might have siphoned away customers from it. ( At the time, I think that the Mall was owned by the developer, Simon Properties )

Louisville is my hometown and I haven't been home since 2005 so I really appreciate these videos on places that I used to visit all the time. This mall dates back to the 1960s but has undergone a lot of renovations over the years. They added a whole new wing back in the 1990s. Those malls are in the well off east end of Louisville.

One of the reasons St. Matthews and Oxmoor can coexist is that they have different offerings. Oxmoor has Von Maur and Macy's (a huge, glorious Macy's!). One of the malls that no longer exists was Bashford Manor. I had so much fun at that one as a kid. Now it's just a bunch of big box stores.

AGAPE used to be GUESS and I worked there when I first moved to Louisville. Across from us on a location I’m your video shows closed was Godiva. At the end of the night we would watch Godiva chip the chocolate off the strawberries, weigh it and recycle it for the next day!!!! Maybe that is why they closed! When I was there, the parking garage addition qualified the mall as the largest in the state of Kentucky.

Back in the day a high Dimebag Darryl was caught by mall security scooping up the change in the fountain near the parking garage entrance with a friend of mines older brother.

Incredible video Doomie as always. I love the mall fountains! Sad to see they are becoming more of a rarity in malls as they tear them out in favor of saving money.

Interesting, I grew up in a small town with an A and P, replaced in the modern era with a Dollar General. Miss the smell of freshly ground coffee. This mall was very well updated, modern and not over done. Knowing Louisville, (or Louieville as I called it) its good to see at least the malls doing well, as some parts of the city are down right dangerous at night. Like any city most all the shopping is in the wealthier part of the area. Not like the old days when you went downtown to shop. Great job Doomie, your editing is really great.

The fountain with the horse used to have buttons people could press to control the fountain streams and have them shoot up or in curves.

Fun Fact: Mall St Matthews used to have a Chuck E. Cheese’s pizza time theater where the food court is now from 1984-1991

This is clearly one of those "live malls that put other live malls to shame"! The fact that it's a Rouse obviously helps. Does give off slight Exton Square vibes, which is neat.

Rose's still exists. We have plenty of stores in VA. PLEASE try to come to Military Circle Mall in Norfolk, VA. It's gonna CLOSE on 1/31 and all stores have to be vacated by then. It's gonna be demolished.

Louisville is, again, my hometown, and, though JMall was my home mall, I've been to Mall St. Matthews (and Oxmoor too) many, many times. These two were the "nice" malls, in the "good" end of town. They were seen as more upscale, more expensive. Good to see it's still doing well, and SO happy they've kept (at least some of) the fountains!! I remember being dropped off at one of these malls, I think it was Oxmoor, at 15 years old, along with my then-boyfriend, and some of our friends. This would be in the mid-90s. We'd walk the mall, browsing the stores, eating at the food court, and hanging out in the conversation pits, for hours. All by ourselves, no parents or other adults. And no one ever bothered us, or even cared, really. It was always so enjoyable, and we never caused trouble. You know, there's not really a lot of stuff for young teens to do, not a lot of places that don't charge an arm and a leg for admission, where they can just hang out and socialize. The mall was one of those few places. It really sucks that a few bad apples have ruined that for everyone. I'll never understand why some people are so selfish and self-centered, and seem to live just to cause trouble for everyone else around them. It's really sad.

I love this mall. Whenever I visit family in Louisvile, I have to stop in to shop- especially at Dillard's. I like Oxmoor, but St. Matthews is my favorite.

I suppose since this is my hometown mall I've often considered it rather mediocre to other cities offerings; grass is always greener and all that... Sure I've many nostalgic memories enjoying time at Suncoast, Software etc. (St. Matthews) Sears, Babbage's, and Lowes Cinemas (Oxmoor) but sadly they've outgrown their purpose for me at least. I guess I should appreciate that they're kept up and as busy as they are today, however I can't help but feel older as I glance at them now and mumble quietly to myself "remember when these places used to be fun?". Well at least they're still fun for some. I do miss that giant chess set tbh.

Have you ever been to that mall in Dallas that’s within walking distance of the Galleria? It’s the same story there, they both still seem to thrive. At least they did in 2010 when I was there. Can’t remember the name of the mall right now though

i like this mall. the higher ceilings at hallway intersections & then the hallways themselves have that have almost like a 2nd ceiling that comes down almost like a mini roof. the hardwood floors really go well with it. plus i love the fouintains especially the one outside jc penneys. just to bad they removed the 2 back in 2007.

Let me tell you a secret. Its mostly products for your skin/hygiene, or some random stuff. If one of the skin guys ever asks, try talking about your privates; like saying "can it clean my balls?" for a skin softener. I usually either speedwalk past those kiosks, but if they ever catch you, do what I said. They will shut up immediately and leave you alone. I wish I didn't have to say it but me and my friends have convinced some of those kiosks so seriously that they never speak to us again! We've never been kicked or warned by security, funnily enough.

I can't wait to see the other mall. This one looks pretty fancy, so the neighboring mall has to be really something. For a modernized mall this one looks really nice and anything but bland.

I lived in st Matthews from 2014 thru 2019. Loved it. It's a great area to live. I do remember the disturbance in 2015 at the mall. It was the day after Christmas and it was all teenage black kids not even from the area. I don't think fights really broke out it was more too many unsupervised teens that decided to run around, yell, scream, etc.
