When we think about creating sustainable communities, we must consider our textile producers. This week, I toured the Pendleton Woolen Mill Store, just South of Portland, Oregon. This Mill-End store is an outlet for end lots, seconds, and scraps from the Pendleton Woolen Mills in Pendleton, Oregon. This company has been operating for over a century, sourcing wool from ranchers in Umatilla County, Oregon, and spinning and weaving their beautiful sustainable wool textiles in Pendleton, OR, and Washougal, WA.
Pendleton clothing and blankets are highly-valued, and here at the outlet, you have a chance to purchase their well-made fabrics for yourself at a substantial discount. This allows sewists like me to afford their otherwise spendy fabric, and make sure of seconds and cast-offs that would otherwise enter the waste stream. Come check out the store with me!

This would be a vacation destination for me. A feast for the senses; I found myself wanting to touch the fabrics, and the colors!!! So beautiful! Sewing and weaving are artisan crafts. I could spend hours in such a wonderful place.

As an amateur historian of the traditional trades, I'm glad to see someone else going out of their way to support the local scene. We complain about things without realizing that it's our actions that have caused the issue. Everyone likes to claim that Walmart "drove out all the small businesses" but don't realize that it was the customers who flocked to Walmart because they felt like they could save a penny who actually drove those small businesses out of business. Culture is the collection of a million little things that set your group apart from "the other". Archeologists and Collectors have written whole libraries full of books that detail these little difference. The patterns and materials vary from one region to the next, and that's what makes those regions unique. That's culture. That's something to take pride in and celebrate. I forge iron and get to talk with hundreds of other craftsmen every year. The story is always the same. Folks don't think about the 2nd Order Effect of the things they support. Here in my area, all our mills have been shut down not because there's no demand for the product, but because people demanded ever more from their employers, and supported yet another tax, regulation, law, that got piled on top of the pile of existing taxes, laws, and regulations. I often tell folks that I should be able to forge all the pitchforks needed to supply the county I live in..... but somehow it's become more "economical" to make those pitchforks on the other side of the world, ship them all the way here to a store shelf right down the road. How is that possible? Well, when you look into the details, you find there are a pile of straws on that camel's back! You can buy a complete pitchfork at the store for $30, but I'm hard pressed just to buy the raw steel and wood for $30. When you look back upstream in the supply chain, you quickly see that everyone along the way has to deal with the same laws, regulation compliance issues, wage demands, and everything just adds up. We can do better, folks, but we have to start thinking about the 2nd Order Effects of things we think sound good in the short term. The Rust Belt was once a powerhouse of manufacturing that employed millions of people. Pendleton Mills used to be just one of hundreds of Mills in America. We talk about Permaculture because we recognize the importance of local produce and holistic living, so now it's just a matter of applying that to the larger scene. Pendleton Mills is sourcing wool from local ranchers, so it's important that we protect the interests of those local ranchers and the stuff they rely on. All the links in the chain are important, and it's those details that give us the 'culture' in permaculture.

Thank you for showing us the inside and explaining about the woolen goods offered there! I don't sew and therefore haven't been inside despite having passed it probably thousands of times! You've given me some ideas for reasons to go in such as the yarn and trimmings to make rugs or mats!

You could also use those bags of edges for mulch too, weed barrier. I know gardeners who use carpet squares that are deeply discounted or scrap carpet that carpet companies are usually just going to throw away.

Wool is amazing! I am thinking of using wool as a liner for the planter I am building in front of my shop... It will compost but I think it will last a couple of years if I use a few layers. Anybody has experience on this?

oh my goodness I must have written it and not hit the comment button.. well here I will do it again lol... ok so I believe Pendleton uses the superwash treatment to make their wool garments.. here is a very good explanation of superwash by a knitter who is a chemist: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6eaerKeyL_SiY0.html you can go to minute 35:15 to get to the section about the process which is not good for the environment... it makes wool softer and take up colors stonger but the superwash process is not good.... I knit and I only use non superwash yarns, yes they are a bit scratchier but you can get used to it and natural wool is warmer than superwash wool... now the other thing is Merino wool garments, you want to make sure they are sourced from non mulesing farmers... you will be astonished to learn about the mulesing technique (keep a vomit bag nearby). I have asked Pendleton if their merino is non mulesing and also if their wool is superwash and I never got any response.. I am pretty sure they would be announcing it, using it as a marketing point if they did not use superwash and did not buy merino from farmers that do muleslng, so I assume they contribute to these unethical ( in my opinion) processes. BUT I love that you are educating people about how wool is so much better than synthetic fleece and clothing, thank you! But you may want to explore these 2 things: superwash treatment and mulesing.

You mean size-wise or safety-wise? Either way, it’s totally fine. I don’t feel unsafe there at all. It’s off a major road with a big parking lot.

@@ParkrosePermaculture thanks, I’m heading up there this week to grab a couple of board shirts for my dads birthday. He’s 71 and grew up surfing in Huntington Beach California, I’m sure had one back then. And I meant safety wise, my furry kids will be in the truck. Thanks for the video, my local outlet in southern Oregon closed during the pandemic.

I live your channel and your work but my experience with Pendelton. I was very disappointed in their woolens. I was looking foe USA made clothes for my family and found most of their products listed on website as made in China and not 100% wool. Maybe I missed something.

Were you buying clothes, not fabric? I had read that they have had to outsource the garment construction to China due to a lack of suitable warehouses and workers in the United States and the large demand. The fabric itself is absolutely made in the United States either here in Oregon or in Washington state and they use mostly Oregon - although that is also in short supply because of a lack of people raising sheep now so I had read that they have had to start sourcing their wool from other places but that they use a sustainability criteria when sourcing farmers. I would love to see them bring production of their garments back to US!! I think they’re doing their best in a difficult system without good infrastructure. The spinners and weavers and sheep ranchers are here in the States, so buying a garment constructed in China still supports American textile workers

@@ParkrosePermaculture Yes garmets not fabric but I would have assumed they would market that! Because that's why I wanted to buy from them. I will research more! Thank you for your informative reply, I truly appreciate it. You are a blessing to the world!
