Originally known as the Rotterdam Square Mall, ViaPort Rotterdam has made a transition towards mixed use community & business center. It holds no more traditional anchors and only a handful of smaller businesses mingled among larger operations.

9:48 - On the left side, the store with the red barriers was a Champs sports store, and next to it (on its right), was a Friendly’s restaurant. Where the SEFCU is currently, used to be a County Seat clothes store, which became Gap later on. Where the Jewelry Den is used to be a Gadzooks store in the late 90s to early 2000s.

Glad you visited here. I've recommended it in the past, it is my favorite mall. My god, the memories made there are endless. The families, the community convergence, the Christmas shopping with family.... Wish you checked out the graveyard, it is really neat. It is right by the entrance way by the state wing and food court side. I could tell endless stories about this mall. The arcade, carousel, and food court was really something to me back in the day.

I remember my Dad taking my family there every weekend from the early 90s until I left in 2001. I remember going to the Time Out arcade, which later became Cyberstation. We would enter the mall through Sears first. I remember spending my teen years in the electronics section. So many great memories there.

Certainly a well maintained mall. It would be a shame for it to be forgotten like so many malls around the country. First time I've seen the Kmart sign still around, with memories of how big and powerful the brand was at one time. I see Amazon lockers, a first for a mall you have visited. Yes a fountain would add to the mall, always wonder if a fountain is that expensive to operate or maintain, recycling the water I would assume. Your videos are some of the of best of all the bloggers out there. Love your comments a lot!

I was living in Rotterdam when Rotterdam Square opened, and for a few years, it was a busy, bustling place. It would have been great if they could have had a Wegman's grocery store - now that would have been so nice. Although I have moved away now, I enjoyed seeing an update on how it looks now. Thank you.

As someone that lives near this mall, it’s nice seeing more videos about this one. I remember throughout my childhood that my family and I would go there (along with 2 other malls, Colonie Center and Crossgates specifically) all the time just to walk around and look in the shops. I still go in the mall from time to time, mainly (if I’m not taking pictures of the place) to either watch a movie at the theater or have dinner at the 99, it kinda sucks there aren’t many stores open anymore

I remember as a kid going there to see Santa those were the good days of the mall. It's still good with the additions. I just would love to see more little stores open up and return to it's past glory

You were right about the mall starting to go downhill after the carousel was removed. I lived not too far from this mall until September of 2015.

Basically grew up at that mall. I remember going into k.b toys when I was a kid in the late 90s. The food court had the carousel and the "just fun" arcade. What I really remember is every main exit had like 12 phone booths and k mart had that distinct plastic smell that was nasty.

I like VIA Port Rotterdam, it’s a mix of Great Northern (RIP) and Wilton. Classic Wilmorite. Also gives me subtle vibes of the old Riverside Mall in Utica. The Kmart sign inside the mall was gone by the time I last visited in October, but the outside ones remained. The fountain disappeared sometime after August 2020, when I was first there. Great video Doomie!

Glad you reviewed this one. I've lived here for a while. Since you filmed this, a bingo hall opened up across from that 99 restaurant. Plans were in the works for the town of Rotterdam to move their offices into one of the vacant tenant spaces (Kmart I think) but those plans fell through. During the pandemic when restaurants were allowed to open again with restrictions, 99 had outdoor seating on the sidewalk where you walked in. In that center court area where a fountain used to be, ViaPort installed a water pond with little RC boats. You could pay to operate the little boats like an arcade. It never really worked that well however and ViaPort eventually removed it. Great video!

You really should film malls in Canada! If other dead mall people are filming malls up there, I think you also could get some good videos filmed up there. I'd say you probably could also film a few Mexican malls, IF you ever got down to that country. Also good video, of Rotterdam Square. I still prefer to think of it by that name, over Viaport.

i was hoping that cosco would move into the old kmart bldg. it would bring more foot traffic to the mall and hopefully bring more stores to the vacant storefronts. lots of parking and it is located close to a major highway.

This was an ok mall. I really like those shaded/pastel coloured benches. They give the mall a brightened up/colourful touch which I like. Sad to hear that there are no more traditional anchors remaining. That sucks.

I worked here from before the Macy's closing up until Gamestop fired us all and pulled out of the mall (Gamestop used to be where that SEFCU is now). The graveyard you mentioned is to the left outside the mall entrance down the corridor to your right at 9:37. It's a small fenced in area right against the outer wall with some benches. The Carousel used to be beautiful and was located in the food court. I used to come to this mall and Mohawk Mall a lot as a kid even before working there. It gutted everyone who worked there to watch everything fall apart after Macy's and Sears pulled out.

Looks a lot like the Wilton Mall in upstate NY not too far from there. Did you ever release that video? I saw it on a trailer a while ago, but don’t remember seeing the video. Also Crossgates mall in Albany had the electricity shut off multiple times. You should do a video there.

I went here for the movie theater recently to see Mario... You know a mall is dead when the post office moves in EDIT: Aw man... If I remember this mall had an EB Games and a KB toys when I was a kid... Used to spend so much time asking my parents for beyblades and GBA games... EDIT: Ah... "Scuh-NEC-ta-dy" would be the proper pronunciation if you're ever back through. There's a lot of that "SCH = SK" Around here. Thank the Dutch

Your pronunciation of Schenectady made me laugh. ;) I am in Greensboro, NC now, but I grew up just 2 hours away from Schenectady, in the Utica, NY area, and my aunt lived in Schenectady so I was there a lot. You did not pronounce it correctly, but I liked your pronunciation, so I am going to start saying it that way. :) The correct pronunciation is as such: Break 'schenectady' down into sounds: [SKI] + [NEK] + [TUH] + [DEE].
