Travel with me to Rouen, France as we walk and explore the medieval capital of the northern French region of Normandy: Rouen, France.
Wooden, half- timbered homes line the streets, markets selling local cheeses, and pastry shops of all different kinds entice you with their delicacies. The sound of bells ringing from the many churches dotted throughout, and the birds chirping above invite you into this vibrant town. Rouen is full of history and inspiration with a Gothic church skyline that made it the focus of art for many Impressionist artists, notably Claude Monet.
Situated on the banks of the Seine river, Rouen became one of France’s greatest ports with both Vikings and Romans settling, eventually making Rouen Normandy’s capital. Medieval history is closely tied with Rouen, France, including being the place where Joan of Arc’s life was taken after leading France in victories against the English and then captured and tried in 1431. There is now a museum dedicated to the patron saint of France, Jeanne d’Arc, or Joan of Arc.
