There are many things to do in Caye Caulker, Belize. From snorkeling, diving, and fishing to savoring Caribbean style street food - Caye Caulker (interchangeably referred to as "Key Caulker" by many travelers) is a tropical lifestyle enthusiast's dream come true. This idyllic island just off the coast of Belize, accessible by airplane or ferry boat, is the perfect destination if you're looking to soak up the sun and enjoy the very best of the west Caribbean.
In this video, I take you on a walking tour of Caye Caulker (also spelled Key Caulker) and showcase some of the best street food, tropical drinks, and party venues which are not to be missed.
I've been fishing, diving, and exploring Belize for almost eight years, and I can tell you first hand, that each island has its own distinctive personality. Caye Caulker has a stronger Garifuna influence than San Pedro town, which is evident in the low key tropical vibe that defines the island. Walking the main strip on Caye Caulker affords you the opportunity to enjoy a variety of beach barbecues, a myriad of charter boats which can take you out to explore the coral reefs, and of course - a variety of beach bars which specialize in all kinds of tropical libations.
Is Caye Caulker safe? Absolutely. While you should always exercise good judgement and avoid seeking out trouble anywhere you go - Caye Caulker is safe for tourists. The island depends on tourism to support its community, and they make safety a priority whether you're drinking, eating, diving, or staying in one of the many hotels or hostels on the island.
If you're wondering how to get to Caye Caulker - it's easy! You can fly direct to Caye Caulker from Belize City on Tropic Air or Maya Air - or - you can take a ferry boat. If you're staying on nearby Ambergris Caye (san pedro town) there is a ferry to Caye Caulker which departs every hour. Needless to say, don't stress about how to get to Caye Caulker. It's extremely easy.
When it comes to things to do in Caye Caulker, or "Key Caulker" in English, there is no shortage of activities for everyone to enjoy. The most popular things to do in Caye Caulker include snorkeling, diving, walking around the island, drinking at one of the dozen or so famous tiki bars, or shopping for artisan crafts. You will never run out of things to do in Key Caulker, as long as you are inclined to enjoy water sports and enjoy Caribbean lifestyle.
I'm often asked is Caye Caulker a party island? And the answer is - yes! There is always a party somewhere on the island, whether its one of the beach bars hosting a DJ, or a outdoor dancehall where the reggae jams blast late into the night. Caye Caulker is a party island, which is ideal for travelers who are looking to drink and dance, but there's certainly many other things to do.
Is Caye Caulker Belize expensive? Not at all. Activities, accommodations, and dining on the island are much more affordable than nearby Ambergris Caye. But with that in mind, Caye Caulker is not a "fancy" or "extravagant" place. This is a tropical island - so expect sandy floors, unpaved roads, outdoor dining, and dusty conditions. One of the best things about visiting Caye Caulker is that it is an affordable place to really enjoy the best of the Caribbean. Drinks range from $2US to $9US and you can eat a seafood meal consisting of lobster or snapper with rice and beans for less than $15US. You can certainly find ways to spend your money faster than you realize, but without questions, Caye Caulker Belize is not very expensive compared to other Caribbean destinations which offer similar things to do.
Is it better to stay on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye? That depends on your lifestyle. Caye Caulker attracts a younger, adventurous, and celebratory demographic - typically backpackers and travelers making their way through Central America. Ambergris Caye attracts a broader demographic of travelers, from budget backpackers to ultra affluent retirees - and there is no shortage of fine dining or luxury accommodations around San Pedro town. The best thing to do is experience both islands - spend a few days on Ambergris Caye, then take the ferry over to Key Caulker and hang out until it's time to depart through Belize City for your next destination.

Do any of you know about Belize? It’s much like Cuba. Keep the poor away from the tourist. Belize is full of dirt ragged poor people but they are not seen by tourist. The country sees to it. The poor stay poor because of the government. The woman that waited on you may be the next person to cross our border.

What a difference 33-years make. I just don't recognize the Caye Caulker of 1990 when I spent a considerable amount of time there building a Hurricane proof house for a client, but I'm sure the Cane Rum, Belikin Stouts, and street lobster, and Grouper pies taste as good as they did back then. I also had a project southwest of Dandriga near Placentia and for about a week I helped a local Garifuna craftsman dugout canoe maker with a new canoe and fashioned the sail rig and sai and rudder for it and the outriggers while I fended off the playful advances of his exceedingly tall and slender and pretty daughter. One of my best times was spending several days on a little family caye with a local fisherman. It was just a about an acre, but had some Mangrove trees for a bit of shade and to cut the evening breeze. Other good times were in Belize City in a bar that hadn't seen a White man in it in memory spilling Belikin Stouts with two friends while watching the street scene out the second story windows. An interesting thing happened in that bar. One of my friends saw a pretty on the street below and signaled her to come up. She was a local working girl but we had a lot fun with her kidding us with her witticisms. Later one of my friends needed to break a $100 bill as the proprietor of the bar couldn't or wouldn't so he gave it to the young Lady to go somewhere to break it for him, and yes, we all thought he was nuts for trusting her, but a half hour later after we had given him no end of guff, she showed up with his money/change. I later bought a 37-foot Rhodes Sloop which I kept anchored off Placentia and did a lot of local day sailing with it and a few trips of several or more days down to Guatemala and the Rio Dulce and out to the Blue Hole for some diving. I also kept a Hobie Cat on Caye Caulker and in the evenings we would sail around the Caye. The Belizian people are a warm and friendly people who nearly all speak better English than we do. It is so unfortunate that the Caye's and a lot of the coastal mainland will all be gone in the not so distant future due to Global Warming and sea rise. See it while you still can. Thanks for the post. It is still as beautiful as ever

Thank you for sharing such an incredible chronicle of Caye Caulker, and a remarkable journey in paradise. Perspectives and experiences like yours are the reason I strive to document the places I go, the people I meet, and the remaining spectacles of nature I witness, above and below the waves. "Change is the law of life", but that doesn't mean we should ever neglect what once was, particularly when it conjures visions of paradise. I can only imagine the tranquility of Belize before it was formally consumed by the tourism industry. When we fish and dive the out islands, such as Half Moon Caye, or the atoll of Turneffe - you feel transported to another place in time. Where nature is still thriving. The people of Belize constantly impress and inspire me with their friendliness, family focused communities, and resilience. That, to me, is what's most remarkable about Belize - despite its economic / environmental hardships and struggles with poverty - the spirit of the country and its connection to nature remains strong. To anyone out there considering a trip to Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye - just go! The islands are changing, no question, but there is no better time than now to see the majesty of this country's natural beauty for yourself.

By the way... The ultimate Belize beach bar experience is swimming with the sharks at a bar on San Pedro. About five or more sharks were corralled in about a 20' x 30' pen at the end of the bar. If you were drunk enough. Stupid enough. Or knew it was safe, you jumped in for a photo op and to impress your friends down from the States. Locals didn't pay you no mind. Grab the tail of a shark and hang on. It usually didn't take long for the shark to shake you off unless you had two hands on it. Recommended.

Enjoy the trip! You're in for a hell of a time. How much it costs for room, meals, and drinks depends entirely on where you stay, what you eat, and what you drink. You can get by with a minimum $50US for food and drinks on either island, per day (but that's not living lavish, at all). Accommodations anywhere from $50US a night to $500US a night and up. I definitely recommend Sandbar Beach Hostel on Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) if you're budget conscious and looking to connect with other travelers.

Wow, spoken like a white colonialist. You were happy to exploit the cheap sun, food, accommodation and diving. Now the locals have got wise and charge prices so they can make a real living and you don’t like it. I’m sure they can more than do without your business..
@BonaFideWorldGuide
@BonaFideWorldGuide 7 ай бұрын
I held off on replying to that comment for awhile - but I have to agree here. It is FAR better that locals earn a productive living through tourism based businesses than by destroying the local ecosystems with unsustainable commercial fishing or environmental exploitation. Caye Caulker is a community which strives to support itself through sustainable and legal enterprise - if you're not a fan of great diving, excellent fishing, lively beach bars, street food, family owned hotels, and tropical vibes - Caye Caulker isn't for you!

by the time you factor the boat gas to get there, the flight to Belize, the gopro to film it, the computer to edit it, and the time spent walking around - i'd estimate that coconut was well over $3000. :)

Oh yeah! I spent 2 years living in Puerto Escondido like a KING! I had a vacation home in the mountains to get away from my vacation apartment on the beach, and I felt like I couldn't spend my money fast enough! Then my girl said we should head to Belize for a while before heading back to Philly...... I spent more in those 3 months on Ambergris Caye than the 2 years in Mexico and barely made it home with enough $ for cheesesteaks on our first night home... @@BonaFideWorldGuide

I don't know why you would want people to see you wearing these dark wrap around glasses? We can't see your eyes.. It gives you a kind of nasty look and its too bad because we go on vacation to meet nice people, not gangsters.. If you can leave them in your bag in the next video? Thanks! Looks like a nice place ~

@BonaFideWorldGuide
@BonaFideWorldGuide 7 ай бұрын
It's certainly not "destroyed". Belize is still a gorgeous place with magnificent reefs, friendly islands, and well protected ecosystems. The country is facing its struggles with economic disparity and over tourism - but nothing about Ambergris or Caye Caulker reflect a "destroyed paradise".

In my personal experience - there were FAR more street hustlers in Colombia, Mexico, and Honduras. A few people might come up to you on Caye Caulker, but they're selling food, tours, and handicrafts.

Sip & Dip definitely excels in delivering fried food (amazingly good coconut shrimp), but we also had ceviche that was excellent. It doesn't get much healthier than conch, fish, and shrimp cured in lime juice with fresh chopped celery, tomato, onion, and cilantro. Betty's BBQ is classic Caribbean food with a distinctive Belizean influence - I can't get enough of it!
