While on my trip to Virginia in April, I took a day to travel into Washington DC to take a self-guided tour of another architectural marvel - Washington Union Station.
Built at the turn of the 20th century in a cooperative agreement between the Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio Railroads, the station was built to consolidate railroad stations in the city into one unified complex. Now owned and operated by Amtrak, the station serves Amtrak intercity trains, as well as commuter operations of MARC and Virginia Railway Express.
The station has seen many ups and downs over the years, and several renovations and repurposing of areas within the complex. Amtrak is in the planning stages of a multi-year renovation of the station, so it’s appearance over the next decade or two may change quite a bit from what you see in the video.
