A Warbonnet Minifly In A Storm

When the forecast called for over 6 cm (more than 2 inches) of rain with strong winds, I put a Warbonnet Minifly tarp over my gathered-end hammock to see if it would keep me dry.
I bought the Minifly a few years ago for occasional longer hiking trips on which weight and pack space are at a premium (rather than my usual canoe trips or short hikes). I haven't used it often, and was curious how it would do if I happened to be relying on it during a significant storm.

I sewed tieouts to the panel edges in the center. It was an improvement .

It seems (or seams) sewing is an important camping skill. :-)

I only use a 430cm x 450cm tarp and fasten the tarp directly to the ground, because of exact same problems.

How heavy is your tarp?
@VisitaInteriora
@VisitaInteriora 4 ай бұрын
@@lakeeffected 1,3 kg. I did thourough testing during last summer's HEAVY rainfalls. I am not leaving my house without a tarp at least this size... No way.

Awesome video,,,, very informative.... clear n precise. with the WB MiniFly makes it difficult to change out of wet clothes before entering the hammock. Excellent testing, much appreciated. Wx forecast you had I would be bringing the WB Superfly (the Mamajamba usually gets set up as a kitchen area if doing long time camping.)

Thank you for the comment. I'm glad it was interesting. I would usually take the Superfly as for bad weather well, but I was curious to see how the Minifly would do if I were on a long hike and wanted to keep weigh to a minimum.

I typically would use an under quilt protector….but this was a very good test video.
@lakeeffected

Agreed. An under quilt protector would be a good idea in a storm like this. Thank you for the comment.

@@lakeeffectedHonest question: how does the weight of mini fly plus UQ protector compare to, say, the weight of the Superfly, please?
@lakeeffected
@lakeeffected 10 ай бұрын
@@timwarneka5681 That's a great question. From Warbonnet's website, the lightest Superfly is 18 oz or 510g. My Minifly is 326g. The weight of the underquilt protector depends on the brand. A Dutchware Gear underquilt protector is 153g. So, Minifly plus UQ protector is 479 grams, slightly lighter than the Superfly. (Assuming my addition is correct.)

That’s why I switched to setting up the tarp perpendicular to the wind. Less surface area to the wind and the tree supports aid in blocking the wind/rain.

Good point, but sometimes the trees don't offer that choice - such as in my back yard.

That's a good observation. Warbonnet offers them as an option under their Custom Tarp Builder tab. Thanks!

I've noticed that tarps tend to be barely large enough for the hammocks. Is that because of weight? I have a more massive 10ft x 15ft (3m x 4.5m) tarp because I like more room. But I car camp.
@lakeeffected
@lakeeffected 5 ай бұрын
Yes, for backpacking, size in the pack and weight are prime concerns. I have the Minifly for longer backpacking trips. When canoe camping or when I'm pulling a pulk in winter, I use larger tarps.
@lakeeffected

For a gathered end hammock, because of the 30 degree angle of the suspension, a longer tarp will need to be higher above the hammock than a shorter one.

Im suprised there aint side pullouts on that fly...Killer budget fly you should look at is frum One Wind,it has a 12 foot ridgeline and all the options. Food fer thought...

Thanks for sharing. I'll take a peek at the One Wind. This was a stock tarp. Middle tie outs are an option under the custom tarp builder tab on the Warbonnet website. The minify comes in 11, 12 and 13 foot lengths, silpoly or silnylon.

Did you seam seal your tarp?
@lakeeffected
@lakeeffected 11 ай бұрын
I did not seem seal the Minifly and the ridge line did not leak. On tarps with panel pulls, they do leak unless sealed. Thirteen foot Warbonnet tarps have grosgrain loops sewn into the underside of the ridge line. The spot where the loops are sewn in need to be seam sealed or they will leak a little. Hope that helps and isn't TMI. Randy
