Thanks, Margot, for this video. I liked how you incorporated the skin tone into the dress. I’m a bit hesitant to use such a technique, though, but I think I might give it a try.

@@awatercolourist Frustration is often linked to expectations and avoidance of failure. Maybe give yourself some space to play around on projects that are not so important to you and allow yourself to mess up without frustration? To me, the best discoveries come on the razor thin edge between failure and success 😘🥰

The related concept to this is the idea of using a "mother colour" (i.e. one colour that is contained in all the other colours, just like all children carry a part of the DNA of their mother in them). It was first introduced by Edgar Payne who used it to create colour harmony in landscape painting. I also really like the term 'cross pollination', thank you for explaining it so well and demonstrating it with an example :)

Hi Margot! This is the first video I watched on your channel and I already know I will improve because of it! That is AMAZING! Thank you so much! ALSO: as a Dutchie... My compliments for your *pronounciation on Van Gogh* . If you want to pronounce the complete name in the right way, let me help you, haha! In "Van" the A is pronounced like the A in the word art. Drop the jaw a little when you say it. Then you did so well on the sound you made for the last G. That is typical Dutch for ya! But the first G is pronounced in the exact same way as you did the last. Very hard, but you can already do it! You might be the first non Dutch speaking artist pronouncing the master's name 100% correct! I LOVE IT! Greetings, Sonja

@@Pointebrush I thought the term hack was more like a trick of some sort, and I am new to your videos. But I feel what you were describing was a technique or process or maybe a color tip and how you use it in your painting. I thought it was super useful how you tie the painting together with your use of color (i.e., one aspect of your painting process that makes your paintings yours). Your video was a bit different than other tutorials in how you structured it but kept the time limit down (explanation, your example, and tying it to a master painter). It was very helpful to me and gave my brain plenty to think on.

I absolutely loved watching you paint the ballerinas Margot and this color hack is amazing. The subdued ways you incorporated the blue into the skin, and the skin color into the blue on the right ballerina, that's so interesting. And I love color theory and how it can be incorporated into anything from Art to Psychology, two of my very FAV subjects!!❤🥰

This concept is actually called the golden mean. It was used by the master's when they would add a golden wash in the background. While this doesn't need to be gold, the same principle applies today.

I painted a landscape using only 3 primary colors - red, yellow, blue. The landscape and sky looked really pulled together, harmonious, I realized that the granulation of the blue ended up in the sky and in the greens. It was a valuable lesson in color mixing and creating harmony.

What a great example and explanation of this technique. Van Gogh was an excellent choice for an example. I have always loved his self portrait in the grey felt hat for the exact reason that the areas of skin-tone are actually multicolored in the most magnificent and seemingly illogical way. A friend once said to me that it was his obsession with color that truly drove him mad.

THANY YOU!!! 👏👏👏 This has been such a game changer for me recently! I noticed it in your relaxing "channel you inner Matisse" video and it's the closest concept to a video I saw when I started painting by KZfaqr Following The White Rabbit about why you shouldn't clean your brush. I saved that video but it didn't mean a lot to me until you challenged me to try to incorporate as many colors as possible from other parts of my painting in unexpected areas. Prior to that I was just doing it for reflections in water and on nearby surfaces as I learned thanks to KZfaqr Mind of Watercolor. Brava! 💖

I love to watch some of the best landscape artists paint using this technique. They will take a large brush and make a lighter wash of maybe warery burnt umber then wash some blues in for the sky. Most of the time they will continue to add the colors to the original mix. Make their greens and so on.
