Hi Melissa, I am a teen who has aspirations to start my own business (I'm thinking a plant business), but recently there's been so many demoralising things happening (buyers unsatisfied with their order, sellers being rude, buyers not responding etc). So I've just been taking a break as a plant seller just to sort out my thoughts and how I want improve on my business in the long term. Your videos have really helped to cheer me up and I hope that everything will be smooth sailing for you! :)

I would suggest checking the roots on any plants that you have mealies on. I'm not an expert by any means, so take this with a grain of salt 😅 Someone that I know that's been asked to speak at many orchid societies recommended checking the roots whenever you have mealies. He was saying that some of them crawl down, grab onto the roots and occasionally resurface. Might be worth at least looking into! Disregard if you already do this, figured it'd be worth mentioning just in case 😊 Love your videos - you've inspired me to open my own little shop too 🥳

From my exp, mealy bug is hard to get rid of them. I decided to take all the soil out from the plant and clean the root put my plant in the water until I don't see the mealy bug again. (FYI: my plant is monstera) Predatory bugs are also good; I don't have any bugs for a year since I used them for all my collection.

I found mealy bugs on my string of turtles. 😢 I don't know how they got there. There aren't any new plants in this room. My string of turtles is 2 years old at least. I have no idea where they came from. However I did get rid of one plant that had mealy bugs. I was just so tired of that plant anyway and when i saw those I just threw it out of the house. I guess maybe they could have gotten to the string of turtles somehow from there. A few had gotten on my string of pearls too. I certainly treated my haworthias. If you have haworthias make sure you check them. Mealy bugs love haworthias

Love your videos and your fur babies. I did notice they roam freely. I know how stressed you would be, if you were to find any kind of bugs, in the room where your props for sale are. Please take into consideration that the kitty cats roaming in your main plant room, rubbing up against things, can carry bugs into areas you don’t want. They can also unknowingly carry the bugs, rub on you, and then you carry it into the room. It would be best to keep them out of the plant room. Especially away from any plants known to have bugs. I do love seeing your kitties though. It’s obvious the connection you have with each of them. Cats are such awesome little beings! I have 8 of my own.
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa Ай бұрын
Hi Karen! I’m well aware pets and humans can transfer pests. The cats can’t reach the plants on those shelves and I’m not going to shut them out or away from me when I’m in there every day. They don’t have access to my plant room unless I’m in there. As for the props, I often wash my hands or wear gloves when I’m handling them. I even go as far as changing my clothes or showering if I’ve been outside or doing other plant care that day. I’m always monitoring for pests and triple check every plant that gets sent out. I clean the shelves often and I’m mindful of what I place in there. Pests are an inevitable part of growing plants so even with all the precautions and preventatives in place, we’ll still get them.
@KarenReese-zr6rh
@KarenReese-zr6rh Ай бұрын
@@plantsbymelissa I figured that you did. But I see how much love and effort you put into growing them. So I thought I would bring it up, just in case. I’m way paranoid. In addition to aroids. I’ve spent several decades growing African violets. Sometimes having hundreds in my collection. In the African violet world plants can get into the hundreds of dollars also. And thrips are a real menace! They carry something called “ impatience, necrotic spot virus” or INSV. Single infected thrip can go into a room and begin to bounce from plant to plant feeding and infecting the tissue. There is no cure for this disease. I’ve seen posts, in groups where people have been crying as they show the pile in the garbage. Thousands of dollars of violets having been pitched.. So yeah, I guess I’m just overly paranoid! You are blessed that you can display the plants around your home. My cats are very bad about biting on leaves!! They just want to mangle them. They have great fun doing it. Me…not so amused. lol

I think they will definitely find their way to the pests. I’m sure some may feast at night or once they move around and sense mealys and what not. I will absolutely be ordering some when I’m able move them inside again! 😅😅 I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but I’ve never had a pest problem AND all my plants live outside right now on a porch. The only pest I’ve ever seen on my plants were a few spider mites, not even an infestation. HOWEVER, they are gone within a few days. I’ve seen a few assassins bugs nests which are a natural predators, baby frogs and baby lizards EVERYWHERE!! Nature really is amazing. ❤❤ 33:55 oooohhhh I cannot wait for the Hoya drop! Maybe I’ll make it this time!! 47:15 I remember at one point you had multiple of the white cubby shelves where the moss poles are, maybe you could use them somehow to help? I also thing by putting the poles on the other wall will give you more space because of the door.😅

Not quite true, not all mealy bugs fly. Adult males do fly, but it is very unlikely to find any in the home. Adult females do not fly, and they are the ones we find on our plants. Not sure about baby mealies! The main spreader of mealy bugs are us humans! If we are checking an infested plant, squishing the ones we find, and then we check a non infested plant it is very likely we will infest the plant. More than likely we have picked up infant mealies on our hands or clothes and from there they can spread to non infested plants. The only way to reduce the risk of spreading them is to wash your hands really well each time you start to inspect or handle another plant. When checking plants pay particular attention to velcro tape and butterfly clips! I have found these places are excellent hiding places for mealy bugs. It takes a while, but I check and spray all butterfly clips and velcro tape. 😊

I do not know how you dill with the good bugs. I tried it, and it freaked me out. I was so stupid I couldn't tell the good & the ugly. I bought. I paid 80 bucks for it last year. I released it, but I didn't know what they looked like the next morning. I found bugs into one pot that looks very infested. I freak out, took it out, and water hose the suckers. 😅😂 but I realized after words, "Oh no, it might have been the good bugs. Then I look around. I don't see any bugs at all. So I got this feeling I just killed the good bugs ugh. I couldn't tell if it was the bad guys or good guys bugs. 😂😅😢. So I spent all that money for me to take them out & water blasted them . Now, I use systemic houseplant insect control. Plus, Captain Jack sprayed on leaves . So far, it works great. Nock on woods i don't ever see Millie bug on my plants each . 😅. So my hubby said if I don't like any bugs, stop buying good bugs. I'm wasting money, lol

I got them on Amozon. I think 10 bucks for bottles. I got two, but it works I'm getting 5 bottles or more next month. 😅 I love it. I guess how it works is you put the powder to the roots then water it the plants absorbed it to the leaves if a bug bites or eat the plants. it dies. So far all my plants are happy. At least it works. Is good for two or three months. I'm thinking to doit summer. Fall & spring 😅. I did all my plants few days ago with the powder. Accept the one outside I probably do them close to fall before I bring them in. Because I don't want other bugs to die from this powder from outside. Like bees the good one. I only did the one inside. Luna your cat so cute love her 😍 💕
