I have been a vegetarian for 30 years, but I have had a big problem going vegan because of a disability with my back that prevents me from being able to stand long to cook much in the kitchen. It bothers me immensely that I am not able to progress to the next stage to cause less suffering on other creatures (veganism requires more prep/cooking time in the kitchen in order to get enough nutrients to survive, unfortunately).

In a couple thousand years, if humanity hasn't ended itself, we'll probably be able to manufacture higher-level intelligent life out of octopi, whales, dolphins, pigs, etc. over relatively short timelines (like maybe a hundred years). For example, a watered-down version we could try today: Background - a certain species of octopus is capable of passing knowledge between members, but they aren't capable of passing knowledge down generationally because of the strong instinct mothers have to protect an egg clutch until they hatch, never leaving to hunt or eat and in experiments even refusing food provided to it. She always dies right after they hatch and they must all fend for themselves and learn via trial by fire. Experiment - If we just shoot the mother with some sort of dart-delivery mechanism that injects vital nutrients into it, say once a week or something, what would happen? Would she still just die? Would she live on and teach her young, potentially accelerating their growth & development and permanently altering their species' evolutionary timeline? Would she just eat a bunch of her own kids and then die for seemingly no reason? Lotta ethical and moral questions arise from experiments like these, but fuck that noise how cool would it be to help evolve intelligent dolphin people or sentient land-squids? I sure hope we don't nuke ourselves to the stone age so we can maybe find out one day! Heck maybe that's how we'll end our own species, by enabling one superior to evolve beyond control (that isn't an AI singularity).

Exactly what I was thinking! The whale probably had a very similar emotional reaction to that "helpless, small" human than we have to a small and cute animal. I have once caught and picked up baby hares who were harrassed by crows. They probably also were afraid I might hurt them, just like this scientist was afraid when the whale started pushing her away, but I only wanted to help them.

Yes, elephants of the sea! Recently saw video of a female elephant trying to shove a rhino stuck in mud out to safety AND a pack of lions were closing in. She wasn't able to move the exhausted rhino and ultimately left it to the lions. But she tried with everything she had. That was true altruism and courage.

no video evidence of the shark in any of the videos. Also if there was a shark she wouldnt have left her legs dangling in the water when she got in the boat. I call bs and everyone bought into it haha

@@johnmccormack2046 No footage of the shark because she said it was only while turning out of glimpse from her eye that she recognized it - and then the whale immediately picked her up on his face. So no time to either put the camera back on (it is obvious that she did not film the whole time through) or stay staring at the upcoming shark. Those wales were still too close to the boat and protecting it & her when her feet were still dangling in the water - that shark would not have dared an attack within the first minute.

IDK if it's true, but I heard about someone doing a study and using electrodes to measure animals brain waves when they are exposed to humans. They have the same reaction to us that we do to puppies and children. We're babies to them.

Loving an animal is sort of like expressing gratitude to God for His creation and appreciating what God has given us. His creation is even greater than we originally realize when we come to know it’s not just about us humans. The mammals that He made can love too, they have their own feelings and emotions. Just like how much they love their babies and how they mourn when one dies. Whale mothers who have a calf die will carry their dead baby on their head for days and you know they are grieving. I had a toy poodles who lost two puppies and she grieved so bad that our whole family were crying with her when she finally put the dead baby in my hand and dove in my arms and buried her head and literally sobbed. I learned that dogs learn words and they can read us like a book. Our horses and cats have shown great intelligence also.

Not "one of" the largest living creatures, but THE largest living creature of ALL TIME. There has never been an animal, in the history of this planet, larger than a blue whale.

Think of how CONSCIOUS these creatures have to be to maintain such gentle contact for so long, with all that mass... They are fully aware in every way, and think about various factors in executing plans.. You can see it in their eyes and actions and reactions to various stimuli. Ocean life is insanely smart. I wish my cat were as smart as a humpback.

But that’s not why altruism exists in nature. It was proven multiple times that this behaviour is the most effective one evolutionary. It exists because of the whales unconscious egoistic instinct to reproduce and survive by itself. Indirect it is indeed expecting something in return. Because of this video whales in general receive more love from humans so it’s survival strategy worked out here very well.
