"A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Gary Brooker at Douglas Adams - the Party, in 2012, on what would have been Douglas' 60th birthday. Join us to celebrate Douglas' life and his passion for conservation in May 2022, for the Douglas Adams Memorial Lecture: bit.ly/3w9qIgf
Douglas was a founder patron of our charity. He once joined us for a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro in a rhino costume and even writes about it in The Salmon of Doubt. This year would have been Douglas’ 70th birthday, and we’re celebrating the best way we know; a live event with talks from speakers that we’re sure Douglas would have loved. This year’s lecture will be given by Professor E.J. Milner-Gulland from the University of Oxford, and the event will be hosted by Producer, Comedian and serial Douglas fan, Rachel Wheeley.
Join us at 19:00 (GMT+1) on Thursday 26 May 2022 at the Royal Geographic Society in London, or online in your own homes, to hear incredible speakers and honour Douglas.

Fabulous. I was there on the night. A superb performance by Gary and when Dave Gilmour did that beautifully restrained solo there were a lot of tears of both sadness and joy in the house. One of the most memorable events I have ever been to.

It's the story of Mondo Libero, a story of love. When I learned of the death of the father who was already in the ground, upon arriving to work at the concert bar, the computer selected this Procol Harum title at the very moment of my arrival in the premises, whereas never before, the computer had not selected it during all evenings. There are signs, they come from the heart. I had felt the exact hour, minute, second of his departure too. I already sang this song as a child. The tears that we cannot hold back, whether they are of joy or sadness, are the strength of love. RICO.

First of all, I can’t believe that there aren’t more comments on this beautiful song and the talented Gary Booker! I’m almost 70 yrs old now and grew up listening to Procal Harem and THIS song in particular. It was played, and slow danced to, at every single formal/prom when I was in college, and is even more meaningful to me now that I’m older than it was back then! It’s too bad that so many younger people don’t know about, or appreciate this kind of music, and call what they do ‘great’ when it really doesn’t even come close to this! It’s a shame that we lost Gary, along with some others, but we do have some of the great, ‘older’ ones who are - fortunately - still with us today (AND the technology we have to be able to still hear/watch them on YT, etc.)! Granted, of those who are, some of their voices have changed with age and time, but imo it doesn’t matter. I give them all credit for still performing in spite of it, and actually think some have even improved (i.e. Elton John, Joe Bonamassa after getting a vocal coach that is, Clapton, etc.)! I saw Gary Booker perform this song in a video from a concert in Denmark (1996, or thereabouts) and wrote a comment on how much I loved it, and why. I got a reply from someone who actually said I shouldn’t watch OR listen to the song bc the lyrics were about ‘drugs’, and people shouldn’t indulge in this type of music! I honestly think the words are such that their ambiguity can mean something different to each person who hears them, allowing them to form their own interpretation and relate to them as they feel. But finally, imo, this is really lovely, and was for a good cause as well!
