After much thought, I have decided to go into knifemaking full time. My channel will of course still focus on custom knife reviews, but now I will have additional content to add with shop videos as well. Taking instruction from my mentor, Jerry Moen over these last few months, I've found that I truly love doing this, and sometimes can't sleep at night, waiting to get back out to the shop and do more work.
I'm at the very beginning of my journey, and have still so much to learn. Each new build presents new challenges, and new mistakes to learn from, and I enjoy every bit of it. Guidance and support from makers like Jerry, Loyd McConnell, Dan Sullivan (DSK Tactical), Shane Magnussen (Scorpion 6 Knives), Doc Shiffer, Mike Stewart (Ekim Knives), Todd Begg, Collin Meyer (Rad Knives), Todd Heeter and so many others have helped me immensely and I am forever grateful... even for the tiniest bit of advice.
You can visit my website at: skeltoncustomknives.com to see what models and variations I am offering, as well as specs and pricing info.

The knife/EDC community is the single most beautiful thing, i mean it's such a loving and passionate community with people that care about each other and want to help each other, a lot of people don't understand this hobby/lifestyle but they are missing out, i'm really grateful that i'm a part of this community and that i have a place to fit in with other people that share the same interests as me, to talk to knifemakers and youtubers that i look up to and have deep respect for is just fucking rad. i hope you guys are just as excited as i am and cant wait to see what the future have in store for the knife industry and community, and i wish you the best of luck with your knifemaking Jim, you are already on a level that take people years to get on. ! :)

Hearing you talk about Jerry and the way he taught you in making knives reminds me of the guy who taught me how to weld and not just putting a bead down but the artistry of welding and all his little tips and trick grant it not as complicated as knife making but those old timers who really know everything and are willing to share their knowledge and wisdom to the next generation is how these skills and crafts stay alive throughout time.

Hey Jim, I'm a machinist, and a trick I use on the sensitive drill press is to take a C clamp and attach it at an appropriate distance on the X shaped cutout on your table. Put your workpiece next to it so that if it snags on the drill bit, it simply gets pushed against your C clamp and doesn't go anywhere. I've drilled up to 1/2 holes through 3/16 N690 with this method and haven't had a single dangerous situation occur.

Jim- All I can say is WOW! You have taken the addiction to the ultimate level. You have a nice set-up. I really like your knives. You've always had a good eye for design and quality. This is just unreal that you gone to these lengths. Very cool that the knife community stepped up. I am not surprised as there are so many good people in the community. I like that you are safety conscious and take into account your neighbors. Jim, you have some huge hands. You did lose some credibility with the pretty face comment :-) I wish you great success and maybe someday I'll be the proud owner of a Jim Skelton knife.

I started making knives around April two years ago. I have a few more tools than you (wood working tools, bandsaw mitersaw ect) but in essence about the same level of function. It for me is a part time gig, some times a hobby. And boy do i understand what you mean when you were talking about getting a supply shipment of new material. My girlfriend goes "you spent 70$ on a piece of wood the size of my phone!!!" and i simply say "no, i invested it. Someone else will pay for it, they just dont know it yet." Im using my excess funds to buy a new car, but after that... ima get me a tw-90, amazing machine. Your going to love the surface grinding attachment. The efficiency of which it cuts is amazing. It has really allowed me to lower my prices on certain types of knives that i sell (mostly kitchen knives). I originally thought id only be using it for forming tapers but its bevel forming feature is pretty great.

Look into a rotary compressor, it's amazing what you can find hen you intermittently check Craig's list for tools... I've scored a 60 gallon rotary compressor for $100 which is a fraction of the true cost... just this week I got bored and looked and found a monster paragon heat treat furnace for $500... the best part is when I I met the guy at the airport where his shop was I learned he is one of the worlds leading consultants for carbon fiber and composites... you rekindled my love for blades a couple of years ago and I haven't looked back since..... thanks Jim!
