I have trained six horses since 2012. I’ve watched a lot of videos. I have learned sooooooo much! I feel that I have not trained any horse very well. They are rideable but reactionary at times, they hold their heads up high, and have poor stop. But it’s amazing to me how you have a different perspective that is absolutely logical! I have a 15 year old Appaloosa that I got last fall that is full of fear. He’s reactive, flighty, pulls back, rears, and shows zero confidence. I cannot wait for the -40 temps to move up so I can put to use the tips I’ve learned from watching you.

I know this exercise is to convince the horse that you are the herd leader and should be followed. Can two people be herd leaders? So if I do this successfully with my horse, could my husband then do it another day and get the same respect? and then would my horse still respect me as leader? And vice-versa for me and his horse? We both ride both horses.

I’ve tried this with my horse, but she tends to just look at me and really give me her attention but from a far. I don’t want her to think she can also rest away from me, but I don’t necessarily want to reward her while being away from me. How can I go about correcting this?

Curious to know if in a wild or natural herd, if a dominant (alpha) horse claimed a particular spot would the submissive horse then keep very close to the dominant horse in the way shown in the video? Wouldn’t they wander off elsewhere. So is it more a matter of this technique shows the horse there’s only one safe place where the human doesn’t come at you and it’s next to the human? I’m always interested to know what is really happening to fully understand training methods.

Ryan, I tried this with a horse I have had for 4 years, a highly sensitive Andalusian, and he would turn and keep me within his field of vision, usually within 10-13ft away....does not come to me.... anything I should change or try?

This worked on my dumb mustang. If he can figure it out, any horse can. It took two swats on the ground in his space to make him figure out I was the safe spot. Spectacular stuff right here. I feel like my boy understands this much better than running him in circles. (disclaimer: of course I love my mustang lmao. He's not dumb. Just way too smart and dominant for his own good)

I really like this way of creating a connection. My new 3 year old is pretty left brain, and can appear dull and unresponsive. Of course, she isn't dull and unresponsive . This worked great, though I struggled with not giving her a rub or scratch. But making a program of it , so 3 or 4 days did you recommend?

I’m curious about how this works when we are always leaving and re joining the herd, how do we establish ourselves as the alpha as soon as we arrive in the field? Is this just through time and controlled work on the relationship to build respect so the horse will want to approach?

Test: Once that horse if following you around all hooked up...SCREAM jump straight into the air and take off running...lol if they follow...you are alpha

These are interesting concepts...I'd like to know who Mr. Roses mentor is , from whom did he learn these ideas... and don't say i learned from the horse...LOL...assuming he did not invent these himself).

Ryan can I ask, I have taken on a horse to retrain for a owner, the horse run her over has complete disrespect- he is not a genuine horse. The owner is now getting shitty with me as I have told her that even after training this horse with not be suitable for her. I don’t want to lie to her and say this horse (which has already been through three trainers) is going to be this loving pet she wants it to be. How would you approach this, would you stay with honesty what you assess this horse to be or tell her what she wants to hear, lying to her doesn’t sit well with me. I am not saying he is not trainable, he is is very over reactive, major drama queen over s things, nots scared just reactive , aggressive and she allows it. I would love to here your opinion.

Do less first is so important. I worked for a handicapped gentleman as barn manager on his running horse breeding operation. He had absolutely no horse sense at all. Tried to keep him away from the barn. He was great at bloodlines and salesmanship. But he always wanted to start a fight first with a horse. I might be working with a head shy horse and he's yelling for me to just tie their nose right down to the fence and of course the horse would go ballistic. I had to fix several horses because his idea of controlling them was to grab their ear and ear them down.

We need to stop making ourselves a part of the herd ( a bunch of BS!!! ). We are owner’s and trainers not a part of the herd. Do i always want my horse in my space … HELL NO!!! Do my horse have to follow me around the yard … HELL NO!!! When horses get away from another they do one or two things they choose to come back to the herd for whatever reason or they’re called by another horse or horses. Teach your horse to come when called Use verbal communication ( a cluck , a whistle or a simple come on ) He also stated he didn’t want to show u guys with a horse that knows but on the contrary he’s been working with that horse 2 or 3 weeks
