I love tubeless but I'd never go on a multi day or even long ride without at least one emergency tube. Get an ultra light latex one. Plus in my experience if you're getting noticeable punctures on a tubeless tyre, your tyre is worn out. Only times I've ever had punctures ive looked at the tyre and realised it should have been replaced weeks before. Trouble is tubeless is so good you never pay any attention to the state of your tyres anymore!.

Katie, I absolutely love when you pair up with Juliette! Of course she missed the ferry! (I follow her channel too). What I love best is your attitude to the inevitable glitches that come up (eg ferry, plugs etc). Chill and improvise. It's the first rule of camping, bikepacking, cycloturing etc. Love this content! The smiles laughs and insights. Thanks to you and Juliette for making my day! Also thanks for the vote of confidence on the Garmin InReach Mini2! I just bought one and they are pretty expensive in Ontario, so I'm glad to know it's worth it! Also on my bike tours, duct tape (I think you call it Gaffer Tape?) wound around a pencil and zip ties are indespensible tools for me. I don't ride tubless for all the reasons you outline here. Love the Touque idea (you call them watch caps right?) I'm stealing that one. And absolutley on the THERMAL air mat! My Big Agnes makes all the difference (combined with merino base layer). Can't wait for the next one. Cheers!

1. Good matt, forget the weight, I use a treklogy ul80 I have to use one of those dry bag to help inflate takes a little while but a million times better than hyperventilating trying to inflate the thing 🤣 I used a lightweight one for far far too long. 2. Snood (or hat if Autumn/Winter), not just for blocking out daylight at this time of year, but more importantly keeping your head warm - you lose an incredible amount of heat through your head. 3. Ear plugs, especially useful for blocking out loud barking deers in the woods and noisy audaxers lol If I were pick one more I'd say 4. And again it's about getting a good night's sleep, so number 4 get the hell out of your cycling gear - don't sleep in damp cycling kit that you've been riding all day long!

I just don't get this. You get, in my experience, basically no punctures, unless the tyre's worn out (and you should have replaced it already), or it's the type of tyre slash that writes off the tyre, tube or not. Even if it does fail it often still holds enough air to at least get somewhere useful. And if it totally fails, just stick a tube in! Absolute no brainer.
@RicardoRocha-lg1xo
@RicardoRocha-lg1xo 2 күн бұрын
@@85parrot In my experience, you get holes that will always need a plug cause the (fairly new) sealant doesn’t do it’s advertised job, or sudden loss of air from the bead and always a splattering of sticky sealant that is very hard to remove, afterwards, specially from a beadblasted frame.
@85parrot
@85parrot 2 күн бұрын
@@RicardoRocha-lg1xo not my experience at all on road/gravel/MTB for maybe...5 years? Road is indeed trickier - the higher pressure means the "clot" blows more, but still seals in my experience after a bit of time. If it's blowing at the beading it's not installed/sealed properly to begin with. I have literally never used plug. Possibly could have done but the tyre was just trashed anyway. Simply don't have thorn or pinch flats at all anymore.

I look at tubless as a first hit fix. It catches all the small stuff that would otherwise have you switching out a tube on the roadside. In the event you've got a bigger hole, try a plug. TBH those rarely work for me, but a patch on the inside has never failed. But, who's got time for that. Just carry a spare tube and chuck it in there. I always carry at least 1.
@KOL630
@KOL630 17 күн бұрын
What happens when there’s something in the tyre you can’t locate and it puts a hole in your spare tube? Happened to a mate and pierced two of his tubes. Luckily they had removeable valves so I chucked some sealant in I brought along and it sorted it. I swear by tubeless but carry a spare little bottle of sealant, plugs and patches just in case. A co2 case and a SILCA gravelo pump. It’s maybe more than you’d consider lightweight but riding far and into the middle of nowhere it gives you the confidence that you can sort out most issues in the event disaster strikes.

When you get a tubeless puncture looking at it at the top of your wheel and poking and prodding it is often not the best approach. Rotate the wheel so the puncture is at the bottom and all the sealant runs to there, give it a few minutes to do its thing for the best chance of sealing.

I only use tubes, but here's the tip if the tubeless hole is too big to seal up. Carry some of those tubeless car tyre plug strips that you push in with that big car tyre tool. But don't buy or use that tool. Just buy the plugs, from an aftermarket auto shop. They only cost pennies, & work a treat. Also carry a small section of blade from one of those disposable box cutters that you break off the blunt tip in order to renew the cutting point. Use it to slit lengthwise & also cut to double length plus, the plug strip meant for insertion according to the size of the hole. Its sticky, so do the cutting with the plastic on, & carry the bit of blade in a small fold of stiff cardboard. To push the plug into the hole, double it over insert a tiny small flat bladed screw driver blunted for the purpose, the sewing machine variety is good, insert it into the plug fold, pinch the two sides to the screwdriver shank with thumb & forefinger, then push in. Easy. Your sized accordingly plug should be slightly larger than the hole, but no need to be too pedantic, & what is left outside of the tyre should be at least 1/4 of an inch, either cut off the excess, or let it wear off. To be perfectly frank, I'd ditch the liquid sealant altogether & just use this method of repair on tubeless.......Aust.

Thanks but I had used those plugs... I had used three of the buggers on that one hole and it was still spewing out air. I should have just got new tyres!! The kit I have has that little blade in - good kit but I needed more plugs. Ordered now though so will have full stock - and new tyres for the next one. Appreciate you helping :)
