A push off from shore standing up with a dagger-board in hand, sculling while standing in a dinghy and taking the video, framed sail by shot to end the video, you have it all. Amazing.

I find most people's music choices on sailing videos to be annoying, but the music you paired here's so smooth. I'm curious as to how far north you are with all of that snow. I'm in Texas.

Nice! I just put a lugsail on a 30 year old Klepper folding kayak. She's nowhere near as stable as your dinghy though. Had a nice 45 minute swim in some 11 degree water a few weeks ago. Working on my wooden trimaran for more camp-cruising.

Thanks Paul 😃 , it’s a 13’ fibreglass rowing boat which I put a dagger board box and rig in during lockdown. They were made at Heybridge basin near Maldon on the river Blackwater.

Respect ….. do you wear a wet suit under your clothes. I would be a bit worried about submersion in that cold water - 20 mins and you are fish food.
@denisemckinlay47833 жыл бұрын
And to make it really exciting not only is it cold, but if you capsized or fell out you have zero chance of keeping your head above water with your gumboots on. This lesson seems to be forgotten over the years.
@johnskiahoy3 жыл бұрын
To put my trip in perspective for you , I live on a boat and am the 6th generation of a family of local watermen. One doesn’t just fall out or capsize in an under canvassed traditional lug sail dinghy. My footwear are oversized sea boats which in a worse case scenario ( stuck in slobbery mud) can be easily removed. One has to read conditions and risk assess before going afloat and I wouldn’t want to be calling my chums in the local lifeboat who are more worried about our winter swimmers 🥶 Food Shopping in the Co-op in these Covid times is much more dangerous ! However I do hope you enjoyed my little Video . Stay safe 😃

@@johnskiahoy Good answer! Furthermore, it is a myth that boots "drag you down". The boots themselves are probably about neutrally buoyant and the water in them is exactly neutrally buoyant. The problem with boots is they're difficult to swim in and difficult to climb back aboard in, but they don't drag you down. However, as you say, there's no substitute for experience, having a stable cruising boat, and knowing the conditions. My own boat is GRP but is fairly traditionally styled with a balanced lug that can be reefed down. In all but the worst conditions, I'll confidently sail her with just a windproof over my normal clothes, and a buoyancy vest because it's a good habit to wear one. This is not like a racing dinghy where capsizing is all in a day's sailing. Boats used to be designed to stay the right way up.
