A Year of Sunrises

The sunrise point along the eastern horizon changes slightly from day to day. In the northern hemisphere, it moves northward from the first day of winter until the first day of summer, then returns southward until the first day of winter. Despite a popular misconception, the Sun rises due east (and sets due west) only twice per year, on the equinoxes.
The sunrise point changes due to the tilt of Earth's axis of rotation with respect to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. The change is most perceptible around the equinoxes (around Mar 21 and Sep 21) and least perceptible around the solstices (around Jun 21 and Dec 21). The farther north or south from Earth's equator, the greater the total change in the sunrise position.
In Edmonton, Alberta, at latitude 53.5 N, the change in the sunrise point in the six months between solstices is quite large (84 degrees). One of the best places in Edmonton to see the sunrise point change along a familiar horizon is Valleyview Drive, which is where I photographed sunrise once a month for a year (as near as possible to the 21st of the month as clear skies in the morning permitted).
This video shows the 13 sunrise images from Dec 2020 to Dec 2021 and stacks them to visually depict the change in the sunrise point over a year.
Image Acquisition
Camera: Canon 60D
Lens: Canon EF-S 10-18mm, at f/4.5, 10mm FL
Mount: Manfrotto tripod with geared head
Images Processed with GIMP.

Interesting to read an old book talking very precisely about the path of the sun following portals each side of the North. Six each side of it. And here we have an animation illustrating Enoch's visions.

Root of "solstice" is "sun standing still." And this series of pictures shows why it does seem to stand still! The sun reaches its farthest, stands still, then moves back to the opposite path. Amazing!

I used a park bench and measured a fixed distance from it to mark where to set up the camera. To aim the camera, I used buildings on the skyline as reference marks.

Are there any comparable series of photos that show the MOON’s maximum North rise and South rise-and Moon’s c. 18.3-year cycle to reach ‘lunar maximum standstill”?
@lkvanz

Robert Brammer: I don't know of of such a series, but the time to start it is now! Kinda of a long project though.
@robertbrammer7821
@robertbrammer7821 2 жыл бұрын
@@lkvanz Right, a very long project, Luca! Maybe someone could design a graphic (based on your creation) showing what the lunar progression would look like over the 18 years for, say, Edmonton, or perhaps here at Des Moines, Iowa. After all, I keep noticing ancient societies often marked alignments to and made a very big deal out of lunar standstill maxima as well as solstices (Stonehenge, i think; Hopewell peoples in North America, Mayans, others.) Thank you so much for your brilliant and dedicated photo project---especially with the cold temperatures you often had to endure. You make it much easier to picture Earth's annual orbit, 23-degree tilt, and weather. Thanks for including all the data, too. I may also look up the corresponding length of day-light for Edmonton over the monthly photos, and also see if there is info somewhere on the change of altitude of the Sun at "high noon'" over the year.

These photos are beautiful and illustrate the verse in the Quran (55:17): رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَغْرِبَيْنِ [He is] Lord of the two sunrises and Lord of the two sunsets. The sun rises at different cardinal points in the east in winter and in summer: Thus we have the two easts [ mashriqain in Arabic ]. Similarly, the sun sets at different cardinal points in the west in winter and summer: Thus we have two wests [ maghribain in Arabic ]. and Quran 73:9 رَّبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا [He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs.
