I just feel he was a young pitcher who was already a superstar just 1 full year in, and he let it get to his head and thought the game was too easy for him, which led to him showing up to camp way out of shape

Multiple reasons. Believed his own hype and came in overweight, sure. But also, he may have had dead arm after pitching almost 200 innings last year, something he'd never done before. Was rushed to the bigs in 2021 by a team desperate for starting pitching, and he never got a chance to pitch a full season in Triple A and acclimate his arm.

Dude thinks he’s hot shit, talks about Cole cheating and to make it worse Sportsnet did nothing but endorse it in due to Blue Jays bias, going as far as making an overproduced 6 part mini documentary about him. As a Canadian I genuinely can’t stand them as a sports media network. It got to his head, and now he’s paying for it. I sincerely pray as a Jays fan he never pitches for the team again. That coward can stay there for all I care.

The biggest thing holding him back right now is ego. Refusing to report to triple A tells us everything we need to know about the person Alek Manoah. Talked all kinds of shit when things were going his way. Takes his ball and goes home when it got tough and accountability had to be taken.

As a Jays fan, my mom and I loved him. My mom even got his jersey. And when things went bad, we cheered him on. But I’ve lost a lot of respect for him for not reporting, and I think that goes for a lot of other Jays fans too. I want to see him succeed, but if he’s trying to avoid the work to succeed, it becomes hard to like him even as a Jays fan

I'm in the same boat. I loved him too. Then the decline happened, and he didn't want to do what was needed to fix it. I was at the home opener this season. The FIRST thing I noticed was he gained ALOT of weight compared to last season. I personally think that extra weight screwed up his pitching mechanics. Your body moves totally different to adjust to the added weight/fat on his body. Which to me said he expected to coast along this season strictly on his talents, without putting in any work. That ended up being totally true, based on what he is doing now. If he doesn't come back next season leaner and thinner, Jays need to seriously consider getting rid of him. He needs to show everyone he put in the effort to gain that respect back from the organization and fans.

I think he didn't report because he needs a mental break, things didn't go remotely well all season and when he hit Taylor Ward in the face it made things worse. He'll be back he's a fierce competitor

One simple reason Manoah got bad, other than the drama. He got fatter, a lot bigger. He's the 2nd biggest pitcher outside Lance Lynn now. That affects his mechanics, leading to more walks. Then due to the lack of performance, his head got in the way.

I agree. Nothing wrong w bigger pitchers either. Look at Clemens(i dont know if the roids made him look heftier) but could also mention Nolan ryan… he was also hefty. But they worked out their legs… you can tell manoah doesn’t do legs. He could trim maybe 10-20 lbs and still be good. He looks like a bowling ball on two twigs

If he was actually resting physically between pitches instead of just mentally focusing then I think the pitch clock was definitely a huge factor that likely caused his mechanics to get out of whack.

Problem with pitch clock argument is he's also struggled in the first inning when he was fresh. I'm sure pitch clock plays a role but not the main one.

Not reporting to AAA made me lose respect. Being given an opportunity to get better and just not wanting to put in the work due to an inflated ego is not ok and should be met with the realization that playing in the MLB is a privilege.

It should be noted that Alek Manoah and Roy Halladay had contrasting careers as of now. Halladay, a HOF pitcher wasn’t great from a get go. He was terrible in 2000 with 10+ ERA and demoted to single A. But he showed his determination with new mechanics and stuffs. And eventually, he became one of the most dominant pitchers in that generation.

As a Jays fan, there’s a few things at play here that we’ve seen. First is conditioning, he packed on a lot of weight, each pitch looked like a chore out of the gate. He was built like an offensive lineman, not a top of the rotation starter. Second, there’s quite a bit of this that is mental. He got very cocky, and he hadn’t really payed his dues or earned the right. This is a kid who had around 33innings pitched in the minors before becoming an everyday player. He got humbled by the Mariners but the Blue Jays media up here still put him on a pedestal. He has an attitude problem and a conditioning problem. He needs to fully commit to self improvement during the off season, if not, he will become a fart in the wind like Kyle Drabek or Aaron Sanchez.

Overall good video, but you’re wrong about the concern about Manoah after his start in rookie ball. That level is not about winning games, it’s about getting command and working out mechanics. It was more important for them to see him hitting spots than it was for him to prevent hits and runs. And this isn’t just my opinion, Trevor Plouffe said this on one of the Jomboy podcasts.

Yeah, they told him to just throw it in the zone in that game. Perhaps they had him do that if hitting Ward in the face with a pitch had gotten into his head. Alek looked a whole lot better in his AAA games after that.

@@ItBeNolanTho This is the first year in 20 years MLB hasn't tested for steroids. Lots of players who came back and/or having great seasons. Yelich, Bellinger, Acuna, many many great seasons. Are each of them on steroids? Likely not, but without testing, there's sure to be a few at least. Alek is in a tight spot and they want him to be more muscular, so he's vulnerable to make some bad decisions if MLB doesn't make it clear testing is coming back next year. Otherwise, Alek might come back with all that fat gone and a ton of new muscle, winning the CY Young, comeback player of the year, and pitching triple crown, and MLB will just turn their heads like they did in the 90s.

Verlander was trash with the Mets this year probably cause they didn't let him use them (he even bitched about Houston having a "better system"), moment he goes back to TX, a stud again. Their is zero reason for Acuna to be up there with belinger and Yellich. Completely different situations. Bellinger and Yellich were extremely terrible for two or three years then came back abd put up really good seasons. Acuna was coming back from a torn ACL, a terrible injury and was still 17% better than league average in his "bad year". He recovered in the off-season and became the player everyone knew he could be. I fucking hate the braves but you got to give the man credit and to compare his situation to yelli and belli is completely different. Also, Bellinger and Yellich are definitely not cheating.

what happened to Alex Manoah is very similar to what Happened to Rick Vaughn in Major League 2. He got away from himself and his mechanics and thought he was better than the game. Baseball gods don't like that at all. Baseball has always been about baseball. You throw the ball, you catch the ball you hit the ball. Manaoh also added to his size (he was already a big boy to begin with) and so that also adds to the wrong mechanics for pitching and velocity.

After ditching the org upon his second demotion I would expect Alek's time in Toronto to be Manovah _Sorry couldn't help it_ Seriously though expect his second chance to come through one of the Sox or the Oaklan't A's, i.e. some presently bottom-rung team with atrocious pitching that's willing to dumpster dive in hopes of lucking upon embers of talent. Some people think it'll be the Rays but I don't think they'd be willing at this point, they can flip players who don't blow off their teams instead. 26 may be young for an MLB pitcher but it's getting old for someone who needs to prove he deserves to be there.

Weight, attitude, work ethic - you pick 'em but he was rushed to the mlb and like a lot of pitchers who blaze early - he flared out. The woods are full of failed arms just like him. Drafted high schoolers, minor league leap froggers, busted out phenoms. If you don't climb the ladder one rung at a time you better be a superstar. Alek isn't.

He got a taste of popularity and thinks he's Nolan Ryan. He's a 1x all star, and sure, has potential to be a legend, but that respect is earned in time. When he's 33 and earned back to back cy youngs, then he can coast. But he needs to not follow the trend of some of these younger players like Tatis and Soto because when they slip up like Tatis, they don't have a long history to show they've earned respect. If he humbled himself, I'd probably be a huge fan, but he's cocky and has no problem pegging batters to send a message.

The biggest cause. You hit it. He didn't act like a professional in the offseason by working on his craft. He ate, drank, got fat and thought he could just show up in spring training and just pick up where he left off in 2022. The refusal to report to the minors shows a real attitude problem to go with it. He also does not have a contract for 2024. He was a dirt cheap commodity at $745,000 on a one year contract for 2023. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jays release him outright in the offseason.

If you're a starter and that heavy it just isn't gonna work. @@kermitfrog593 I remember that Baltimore game. Even though he was suspended, I'm not 100% certain that was intentional. One of Alek's pitches runs in on hitters, and it's common for it to run in too much. Hitting batters is a normal occurrence for Alek.

As a Jays fan this has been the most painful season to watch in years, from inconsistencies, disgraceful offensse considering the talent, and just overall more drama than there needs to be. Especially Manoah, he went from Obsessed documentary, to Obsessed about refusing to play for Buffalo. I honestly don’t want this team to make October. I want to see an organizational panic, to see either Atkins, Schneider or Martinez gone in the off-season. I am so sick of the sports misery I Toronto extending to the Leafs, the Jays doing this to me is the last thing I need mentally.

3:40 I’m a Yankee fan. Him shutting out the ‘23 Yankees isn’t an accomplishment. The offense is so bad I think I could get a few Ks with my 56 mph fastball. Also, I think they brought him down to the FCL because it’s near their ST base and wanted to work on his mechanics sounds bad getting demoted to Rookie league but makes sense from a Facilities perspective.

He needs to: 1. Drop the lbs. like down under 260. 2. Get a consistent workout plan. 3. He has the stuff and ability now hone each pitch in with command. 4. And shut the hell up. Let your pitching to the talking. His mouth should be full of humble pie for awhile anyways. If he does these things he could easily go out and dominate the league for 10 years, but its up to him.

Flip him. 26 is old enough to know better. But if he sees Vlad get away with only having to try hard to cut weight and come to spring training in "better" condition than last year. Sure give him a bloody rotation spot.
