0:38 That's the avionics ventilation exhaust, not the battery venturi......although I believe the venturi is in that vicinity of the fuselage.

So as part of pre flight checks on the ground, you monitor battery voltage in "off" (bats disconnected from bus) and, if too low, set to "auto" (connect to bus) to allow for charging and then check again after 20mins for sufficient voltage. But to not just waste your time you have to remember a rule that the batteries will simply not charge even if set to "auto" while low on voltgae, with gear down and no-smoking in auto? Why? When reading rules like this, I wonder if some engineers might have gotten a bit carried away during development 🙂

Will the batteries charge if they are turned off with external power on ?

As far as the manuals say, I believe not, but I’m happy to be corrected

@@A320Knowledge I've had the A320 systems class but it is a detail that I've forgotten. Where I work they have a habit of turning off the batteries because if the external power is cut off for any reason the batteries will discharge and cause a flight delay. But prior to this I would have never turned the batteries off simply because when the AMM says to supply external power reference blah blah, part of the procedure is turning on the batteries. And any time I step onto the aircraft and batteries are turned off, the batteries seem somewhat .....not charged....when I turn them on. I've just always felt like it was better to leave them turned on. Personally I have never seen external power drop off for no reason.....so I don't know by what experience these other guys are going on. I think today's power units are very reliable.

Very true. I can see the argument for keeping them off when parked overnight. But I would probably keep them on in all other scenarios. My experience of unwanted ground power disconnection has always been “human induced” !

Batteries do not charge in situation 3, with the NO SMOKING switch in "AUTO." That's fascinating. I never knew that. What's with that NO SMOKING switch? The emergency lights test won't run with it in AUTO, either. What's the deal with the NO SMOKING switch interacting with so much??? Are you sure about that??? It would mean that the batteries wouldn't charge on the ground unless someone noticed that NO SMOKING switch position.

This is again from some Airbus documentation. It may not be true for all MSNs. Also not all of them have the NO SMOKING switch. There are other variants that have a NO PORTABLE ELEC DEVICES switch as well, so it might not apply to all.

@@A320Knowledge That's also fascinating. I know on the 787 they have gone from lighted NO SMOKING signs to simple placards, which makes sense since it has been no smoking all the time since the 1980s at least. That way we don't have to maintain no smoking lamps on the 787. I wouldn't be surprised if new generation A320s were the same. It's funny though, when we first got the 787s we would get write-ups about the no smoking signs not lit. Well of course they aren't lit because they are placards, not lighted signs.

Interesting! There are some A320s that have permanent NO SMOKING signs illuminated and no switches too. The placards make a lot of sense. You wouldn’t think there would be a need for these signs anymore nowadays!

Capacity in Ah alone is meaningless, without mentioning the voltage, number of cells or even the chemisry

You’re right, to assess the entire battery performance you need those other parameters. However, Ampere hours is a fundamental measure of a battery's capacity, indicating how much charge it can store and deliver over time. Without the Ah rating, you cannot accurately gauge how long a battery will last under specific loads.

@@A320Knowledge Okay, so later in the video a voltage of ~25V was mentioned, so that's clear to me now. But do they still use lead acid battery technology?
