Even when compared to recent 737s, you see that the A320 is more modern. Just compare what happens when "arm doors for departure is called" : Airbus: Pull and stow stafety pin. Flip arming lever. Cross check and done. Boeing: Kneel down and try to attach top end of slide to hooks in the floor. Stand up again and place indicator strap across door window. (That's vintage!) Cross check and done. When an armed door is opened from outside on a 737... better jump out of the way. On the 320 it just disarms the slide (if someone is at door level, there's no need for a slide) and the door opens. The 320 family is my favorite narrowbody!

This video has forgotten a very important fact, when the A320 has been introduced all other planes cockpit were a mess and looked like clockmakers with some digital instruments. The A320 featured a high automated, ergonomic glass cockpit with Flight Envelope Protection. This plane was a shock for Boeing and McD. The A320 introduced many firsts like carbon brakes, FBW etc..

@twiff3rino28 6 жыл бұрын
techdefined I think the 757 introduced carbon brakes as an option, but yeah - FBW was a huge deal back in '87 and people seem to forget this too often.

Not quite right - Concorde intruded the side stick (in civilian airliners), carbon brakes and (albeit analogue) fly by wire =) So the Concorde project put a lot of good things into the foundations of Airbus. It is too easy to forget today just how far ahead of its time Concorde was...

@@Volk1880 I couldn't agree more, I'd like to add that Concord was an example of what people can do if they cooperate and work together not go to war all the time.

@@j.o.1516 Hello J.O. - forgive me I should have been more clear. One of the French Concorde's was fitted with a side stick on the left side, in order to test it as a proof of concept. I have a link to a picture here but if it does not work just google "Concorde Side Stick Test" - The normal controls were kept on the right side as a backup. i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn142/Bellerophon_photos/minimanchebr4.jpg I think they only few it something like 10 times however they did a lot work work in the simulator working out the "feel" of the side stick and also worked out the basic flight envelope laws that went into the A320. If you are interested in the history behind Concorde and pretty much every technical question you can think of visit the "concorde question" thread on pprune forums, it has 100+ pages of gold info.

The fact that a320 came only 4 years after the 737 classics and still competes with 737ng just goes to show how advanced that aircraft was for that time The fact that only thing Airbus had to change about that aircraft to make it modern in 2021 is the engines and the winglets shows just how impressive that aircraft is no cockpit modifications no MCAS no extra training It’s so impressive this aircraft is like the original iPhone of the aviation world

I really like the research that you have done on the history of the A320. I had no idea so many were sold however I do know that the backlog is close to 6000 A320 family planes. I first flew on one in 1989 Air Canada and compare to the 737- 200 and 300 up to 500 that I had flown on before, the A320 was very modern and quiet aircraft. The A320 that landed in the Hudson is a testament of how well engineered it is, not a miracle, just well build.

As a ramp agent, the 320 has any NG beat, hands-down. Easy to stack and load bags, moving floor system, straightforward Power & Air connections. Not to mention the cabins are just easier to clean because they seem a little bit bigger. Only downside is too much netting in the cargo bins haha.

Interesting that the A320 works more ergonomically than the 737 for cargo handling. The 737 was originally designed to make cargo loading easy, which is why it has such a short landing gear for example. I guess that was back in the 60s though. Technology moves on! I like the 737 as a passenger, but overall prefer flying on A320s
@KasabianFan44
@KasabianFan44 4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Bailey I was surprised too when I read that! I suppose part of the reason is that on a 737 the cargo door opens inwards, which limits space and potentially means that the person loading cargo finds it physically harder to ensure nothing is in the way of the door. On the A320 the door opens outwards so there is no limit.

Much quieter and smoother than the the ugly 73’s. Of course, much superior cabin and hence seat comfort than Boeing. I witnessed improvements through out the years in all types and ranges of Airbus aircrafts. A true Engineering and Craftsmanship Marvel........ 747 and Concorde are the only rivals in Engineering; 747’s are not as comfortable or quiet as the first A300, despite the development of newer engines and insulations, except for the 747-800 which I have not been on or the Concorde! L-1011, was ahead of its time, since it was built by Space Shuttle makers. Yet, it wasn’t as quiet as the Airbus, the Cabin, however, was very pleasant and comfortable. I’ll be missing those three aircrafts as soon as the 747 production will cease! Not that I don’t miss the L-1011’s already....

The A320 came out of a need for quieter, more modern short to medium range airliner for European markets. Studies started in the middle 1970's, which resulted in the _Joint European Transport_ design studies of the late 1970's, designed around the then-new CFM56 high-bypass jet engine. When the A320 was finally launched, it proved to be the first plane that could successfully compete against Boeing's offerings on a truly large scale.

First time I flew on a 320 was in Dec 1990, It was a Flight from Ottawa Ontario, Canada to Edmonton Alberta, via Toronto. I was very nervous being on this Aircraft as there had been many Incidents of Pilot vs. Plane in the news, with several Crashes. On takeoff from Ottawa there was a Loud Bang, along with a Burnt Rubber smell. I figured the plane had blown a tire. On Landing in Toronto, it felt like the plane was pulling to the Right. At the Gate we were told the flight was going to be delayed as 'Extra Fuel' was being taken on. A while later, the it felt like my side of the Plane dropped about a foot. I then assumed the plane had been jacked up very slowly to change a Tire, but was dropped down quite rapidly. A few hours later when we landed in Edmonton, it once again felt like the plane was pulling to the Right. I have flown on a 320 about 5 more times, and I have never warmed to it. I liked the Boeing Aircraft better, especially the 767(got to go in the Cockpit on that one)

I think Airbus were ambitious to bring out a New Aircraft to compete with the Boeing 737 and MD 80 & Md 90 which were so established , but it was the new design features which to my mind broke the mold ! Fly By Wire, A wider Fuselage, A New Aircraft to compete with models that had been made for Years , and in Boeings case , they are still making them some 50 Years on , although as we know there is only so much tweeking you can do to an old Aircraft design.

My friend pilots A320's. He says they're great but boring to fly compared to Boeing's which actually give you things to do. He says Airbus pilots fight off sleep fairly often. The side sticks are virtually useless and are frequently overridden. He says anyone who is computer and tech saavy can fly an airbus, much of the flying is control memorization as opposed to real flying.

Same sort of distinction could be made about the 717, which was from McDonnell Douglas, except the vast majority of the model were produced before Boeing took over. Those MD-80/90's are not counted as Boeing planes, nor are the earlier DC-9's on which it was based.. The Bombardier model have mostly been built by Airbus.

post 2019: "the most popular airliner"

Almost. Probably is now the most popular in terms of commercial numbers sold, as the 737 includes hundreds of US military orders/subsidies. Over all difference in the number of completed airframes still favours Boeing (by roughly 950), but that 8%(approx) difference is after 20 years longer on sale. By that measure, the A320 sells better, and has done so for most of the past 25 years.

I prefer the A320 to the 737, the seats were more comfortable, and it was smoother than the 737-900 I flew on 2 hours later.

Not a big fan of Airbus in general but the A320 shows up the 737 as an antiquated relic.
