A41 - Nero fiddled, I built an Active-Aero wing. Arete supercar project

In the midst of the September 2020 forest fires here in Southern Oregon, life must go on; even when you are waiting to be told to evacuate your home. So, rather than sit and wait, I finished up some work on the active-aero wing for the back of the Arete supercar. In the video, I focus a lot on using a twill weave fiberglass, to adjust to the tight curves and folds needed to fabricate this wing.

For the wing, have you thought of adding a condition in the software that would incorporate steering wheel angle? I'm thinking there could be high speed conditions where there'd be turns but obviously not as short a radius as lower speed.

Awesome vid Jay! i have another question today if you dont mind. I see the wing planty strong. But what about the mounting points? arent they just sitting on foam? wouldnt the force of the wing pushing down crush the mounting points into the foam and fail?
@BuilderCreator

Mounting points are sitting on the "Spar" that crosses through the center of the wing.

Wow. I want to see how you work the arduino in with it! So once its in range/extended out, do you plan to do different angles for each mph, or have it hold one angle within a range of mph?
@BuilderCreator

Probably going to have to be "deployed" at certain speed ranges, tucked in for low and high speed and secondary actuators deployed on breaking.

Phew... At last, after 2 weeks, I have watched all the videos. Time to go back and watch all the videos again 😂. Really sad to see the forest fires in Oregon 😢. By the way, how are you thinking of actuating the wing, are you thinking of using hydraulics pistons? And how would you extract the speed data from the ECU to actuate the extension of the wing? Thank you, great work as usual 😊👍...
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 3 жыл бұрын
Actuating- pneumatic cylinders with lock positioning. I will have onboard air, but don't want to deal with added hydraulics. I will only have 3 positions; parked, deployed and braking. An Arduino sketch will read a CAN (ground speed) signal and deploy if the speed is between say 30- 120 mph (48 - 123 kph) and the active aero switch is ON.

Have you designed this wing using CFD or are (excuse the pun) you just winging it?
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 3 жыл бұрын
It is a variation of a NACA 6512. Slightly more drag than I would have liked, but it fits nicely into the spoiler shape in the retracted position. I do have tabs built on to my control arms that I hope one day to fit load sensors to, then I can tune the position/angle of attack, at the track. So the dream goes!

Why does everyone use brush for fiberglass not a skinny Minnie roller or sprayer
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator 2 жыл бұрын
It is hard to apply the right amount of resin with a sprayer (plus the problem of over-spray control). A roller tends to pick up the fiberglass cloth and move it. Regular brushing will also move the glass fabric, but you can develop a technique called "Stippling" (a sort of rolling-twist of the brush) to actually press the fabric in place as you apply resin.
