Aachen, founded in 800 AD is a spa city in western Germany, It was once a royal residence of the Emperor Charlemagne and a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire.
The Christmas market takes place in Aachen’s old town between the stunning Baroque Town Hall and the medieval Cathedral, and as you walk through the old town streets, you are enchanted by nothing short of Christmas magic.
The old town is a bit a way from the train station, so we did have to take a taxi to get to the old town city center.
Cologne was our "homebase" for this day trip, and is about a 45 min trip on the train.
