Aamna 101 I Episode 4 | Mahwish Zaidi | The dos and don’ts of hijabwear | Casual & Formal | Sportswear and More
AHI is about women, who - like snakes - are gorgeous, intelligent and hugely misrepresented. AHI is about changing perceptions. It’s about us.
We'll cover fashion as a source of self-expression and body positivity. Interviews with exceptional women who have survived society and its outdated expectations. A little bit of style, a bit of lifestyle and a whole lot of Aamna 101.

As a hijabi I wanna add my part too in the discussion, Just a little tip: Wear printed hijab with plain shirts ... And plain hijab with printed shirts .. Like Mahwish here is wearing plain scarf with a printed shirt. Find the fabric that suits you ... Like chiffon/Georgette suits me for plain hijabs & for printed I prefer cotton/linen.. For occasions: Hijab can lift the whole dress ... If I'm wearing simple dress, I always wear a glowy or a bit shimmery hijab ... (Cotton/polyester or Silk may be) If I'm wearing any embroidered dress I take simple hijab ... (Chiffon/Georgette) Colour & shade of hijab depends on your dress it's material+ material of hijab For caps: I only use beige, white & black ... And believe me these colours goes with every hijab ..

As a hijabi of many years, I would advice women to not match the color of their outfits to their hijabs. Go a shade or two lighter or darker than your outfit. It brings emphasis to your face. If there is print, pick a dominant color and wear that color hijab. Also know your skin tone. If you're warm toned, cooler colours don't always suit you. Some lighter colors can wash us out. Look out for those colors. Also, have a staple gold/champagne and silver hijabs, they go with a lot of formal events. Even if your outfit isn't too festive, a champagne colored hijab will elevate your look and make you party ready.

Hi Yusra, I couldn't agreed more about what you said. The skin tone also plays a key role in your final look with the hijab. I have struggled with whites and beige color hijabs since they make me look dull. Can you suggest what fabric and colors to go for while selecting hijabs for formal events?

I live in Canada and when I started doing the hijab, the best part for me was when I was greeted by fellow muslims in the mall with Assalam o Alaikum sister, who before my hijab wouldn’t know if I was Muslim or not. I would sometimes be asked if something is halal by strangers because of my hijab. Once a gora Canadian asked me if an ice cream he was buying for his Syrian neighbour’s had the right ingredients.

She’s a positive soul… I love that she take hijab as her own decision and the way she loved it. I’m also a hijabi and I want to add if someone want to start doing hijab don’t spend too much initially on accessories gradually accessorise it will not put load on your pocket and you get to know better options… try different options

I don’t wear a hijab but I absolutely loved the episode and how both of you handled the topic so sensitively … there was respect to religion, personal choice but also telling people it is ok to want to look smart and feel good about yourself . The lack of judgement about peoples personal choice and preferences was so refreshing . Aamna well done for asking all the relevant questions and Mahwish to be so articulate and informative. Thank you so much both xx

This is so true. I've always worn hijab and im born n bred in UK. whenever we would go pakistan we would stay in the villages but when we went to the city, the pakistani muslims would make remarks. I found it shocking because its a Muslim country. We actually got more respect for it from the non Muslims.

Because it wasn't a norm to wear scarves and hijabs in pakistan. People used to cover with dupatta but didn't properly cover their hair 20 25 years ago. It is increasingly common now, yet in some parts of the society, it is still not encouraged.

I love the overall presentation of this video. The dialogue is extremely mature ( of course you are two very mature and intelligent women) It is not condescending towards those who do not wear Hijab, yet it is somehow also encouraging to look into wearing Hijab. It also presents an over all positive impact about the whole thing especially for Indians to see because of the ongoing Hijab row. I am an Indian Muslim and my family consists of Hijabis, non Hijabis and even Niqabis and we happily co- exist.

I also started taking hijab 2 months ago but it took me 2 years to take a decision, the reason was that two years back when its was lockdown we were completely locked in our house, during that time I started noticing the behaviour of some extremist muslims around me and on internet, I spent most of the time on internet watching youtube all day and then a time came I just started hating muslims, I thought that this is what islam teaches, but then God made me open the Quran, I only read Arabic Quran before but when I open the Quran with urdu translation I got to know that this is not what our religion teaches and that was only culture not islam, I got more and more closer to Allah because Allah answered me everytime, if I have any Question I just opens the random page in the Quran and my answers are always there, there's even a verse which says: " Yeh kitab hamne tumhare lie hi toh utari hai " Cuz I was learning the Quran by myself I read the verse: "And put your headcoverings over your chest........" (Surah noor verse 31 ) Then I got to know that hijab is permanent and compulsory in islam just like namaz, but still it took me 2 years to take the decison After I started taking hijab I was treated and looked up as the odd one, even tho Pakistan is an islamic country but still people will say things about you, people called me hajjan, ustani jee and many more. The women who takes hijab in Pakistan are either those who are married or those who takes hijab from the beginning, but If you start taking hijab in your teenage suddenly, people will stare at you, at first it was hard but now I like my hijab and look pretty without exceeding the limits and maintaining the modesty, I started loving myself. When I was struggling whether to take the hijab or not even tho I got to know that this is compulsory, I read the verse: "Allah ki ayaton ka ku inkar karte ho, kia tum be khof hogaye ho?"

This was such an insightful conversation! I’m not a hijabi, yet watched the video and actually had some really inspirational moments along with those styling tips. Mahwish is a good speaker and her personality really keeps the audience and listeners intact, just talking about how one can carry themselves gracefully is such a rich topic and you both did a great job having a thoughtful conversation on it. Just to add, this video had more of a podcast feel to it but as long as it’s fun talking and listening, it should keep going so keep it up 🙌🏻

I really enjoyed this episode. I am a hijabi too and I have two things to add to this. Living in America it’s very easy to stand out and look not so classy in a hijab but I think there are two ways to combat this. Firstly, layers makes hijab look very cool. Long coats or jackets go very nicely with it and gives it a modern look. Secondly, if there is a lot of print on your shirt or clothes overall it looks a bit too traditional. I have learnt that solids and pastels look very nice with hijab. Just pick one color as your outfit and maybe some hints of a second color and that’s it. It looks very modern and you can’t go wrong with it. Just my two scents. This is my personal style with hijab :) Very good idea for an episode. Keep it up !

Good informative vlog. She basically covered what needs to be covered for a Muslim woman- Covering of the bosom - as per a Quranic ayah for women Covering of head with a chador - another ayah from Quran Prohibition of Wearing of see thru clothes from ahadees Prohibition of tight-body hugging clothes, And covering up the hips according to authentic ahadees by our prophet pbuh The the actual purpose of these rules is to show modesty first, and also a projection of Muslim identity which gives a unique identity to Muslim women which sets them apart from non Muslim women. Plus the feeling of security and protection from strange men s eyes. I started late too but it did change the way I looked n felt - secure n protected.

What a wonderful episode... really appreciate you coming forward with a video adressing modest style choices ... it absolutely doesnt matter whether u yourself wear a hijab or not.. I started my hijab journey back in 2010 and I am the only one in my family wearing a hijab... as mentioned by Mahwash... we hijabis are much more fashionable and making en effort on our looks... trying to keep it simple modest yet fashionable .... Luved the whole 101... keep up the good work amna... I have over 63 hijab and 29 caps... my hijab range from cotton to linen to chiffon to very very expensive silks... all for different occasions... Now there is a wide range if magnetic pins as well in the market... that saves the hijab from piercing and potential damage... Really enjoyed this session Thanxx Amna and Mahwish May Allah bless u for the efforts...

If you carry dupatta on head , then trust me I am telling you with my experience after so many experiments, hijab gives a better look than the dupatta on head, specially in parties and ceremonies. Dupatta gives you a very stereotyped cultural look because it's only common in some parts of Pakistan and India. But hijab is something that is carried all over the world. Also, if you are hesitant about starting to wear hijab, start wearing it occasionally. Start from wearing in religious occasions first then maybe to the market and so on. I also had started like this and it helped me to gain confidence and now I am a full time hijabi. Wish you luck. May Allah guide all of us !

Enjoyed watching this episode, especially because im a hijabi. I don't agree on what you said about shoes, i think any shoes can be worn, i wear every type of footwear from sandles, slippers, boots, heels, trainers, ballerinas etc. I used to wear every colour hijab cap and all these different pin colours about a decade ago. Slowly i changed amd now i only wear black caps because my hair is dark anyway, i dont need a collection of different colours and as for pins on the side, i wear tiny little ones where the pin head is practically invisible. Also i love wearing pakistani clothes in summer with dupatta draped on my shoulder, of course we can wear hijab and dupatta, i occasionally wear my dupatta as a hijab too. Amna, it would be nice for you to do a fashion fortnightly on modest wear/hijabis. This was a discussion but want to see more styles and look books with someone wearing a hijab. You and tabish can style some models of different body shapes, have them in hijabs and give some tips, dos and donts, where they've gone wrong etc. Usually we see them all showing they're body. We need one episode for hijabis please

Brilliant episode - Aamna i really appreciate your efforts and your genuine comments on each and every topic you speak about. You always come up with unique and creative ideas. This video on how to style with hijab also bring motivation for people to wear hijaab more confidently and yet look flattery. Mahwish good to see you and wish you a prosperous life ahead. Shine on @Hiss- More power to ladies.

Do a 101 on shalvar kameez too, summer and winter. Majoring of women choose to wear shalvar kameez in Pakistan. Especially in summer. Make a guide on how to style it better especially in work place

I absolutely respect your decision for taking hijab. But agar aap mardon ki nazron se khud ko bachaane ke liye hijab le rahi hain to koi fayda nahin hai. Ye mardon ki responsibility hai ki woh aurton ko izzat ki nigaah se dekhen. Otherwise men should also take hijab. There should be equality after all😊
