The thing that gets me is how Zuko WAS listening. He was relating. But the MOMENT that Aang brings up things like how Zuko doesn't have to be like his dad, or that he needs compassion, that's when Zuko was triggered, remembering how he got his scar and everything. The trauma just resurfaced and he lashed out.

A billions of times better then this bloated downright retarded shit. How can they fucking ruin something so simple yet beautiful. Him fucking talking is completely ruining the scene. The og were fast, on the point and actually really sad. When he did chase him away, and then actually thinking about what he said, hits hard, because at that time we realize that this could never be a thing. And then the final blow: "Aang, how was your trip? Did you make any new friends?" "No, I don't think I did" Just simply perfect, much harder hitting, much better written, and it takes less then 5 minutes. That "kids show " was a billion times more mature then the geniciding, murdering to show how mature we are show.

I loved this scene. It’s just nice seeing Zuko have even just a moment of relief from his ever growing burdens. It also emphasizes that Zuko never had anything against Aang, he just only ever looked at him as an objective rather than a person until this point. But seeing him get triggered by “compassion” is heartbreaking.

Masks was definitely the best episode of the season. Between this scene, aang and monk gyatso, zuko and his dad and the added back story of the 41st division with them saluting zuko at the end. This episode was beautifully done.

I like this, their current situation prevents them from attacking each other without drawing attention, so Aang chooses to talk to Zuko to understand him, giving us a small glimpse of their eventual friendship later on, the original only had the scene where Aang talk about the fire nation friend he once knew

I actually love the way they handled this interaction between the two. Aang connected with Zuko’s kid side, but unfortunately at the moment brought up something that brought out Zuko’s indoctrinated side. It really shows us that Zuko does have a good heart, but also how much control his father has over him.

I kind of love this scene for the reason that in the beginning you get the sense Aang is going to ask about the scar (potentially traumatizing to ask tbh, insensitive, likely what people probably look at immediately when they see Zuko). Instead he picks something so personal and intentional that he believes is part of Zuko's essence. Aang is a really thoughtful character.

agreed, and you can even tell that Zuko is expecting that to be the question, the look on his face turns into closed off wall/bracing for it. Because to be honest, how many times has he probably gotten that question in the past 3 years from complete strangers? - maybe not necessarily his crew (though I'm sure they probably whispered behind his back ( at the beginning at least), wondering about it, and wouldn't surprise me if he'd overheard them more than once) - but ports, villages, etc...when they've had to dock to resupply the ship or when he's gone inland to investigate something related to his Avatar hunt, and if they don't ask - a good number of people have probably just stared at it instead. And then the way Dallas in his acting does just this brief look of confusion/bafflement when the question isn't at all the one he was bracing for and instead is "goat hair or rabbit?" - such a really well done scene by both actors.

OG fan here and I must say that they did this scene beautifully. Its funny how Netflix managed to give us this in depth character development within this scene for both Aang and Zuko emphasizing on how they are so much more similar than we thought when they had such a time constraint. They both are expected to do something for the sake of the world. One is fighting for it (Zuko) while the other was trying to run away from it (Aang) but is starting to take responsibility. And the part where Zuko gets triggered at the word "Compassion" is such a genuine showcase of trauma. "Compassion is a sign of weakness" is what he last heard before getting burned severely by his own father. Ofcourse Zuko did a complete 180 degree with his tone going from understanding and calm to furious within this scene. Hes traumatized and hates the word Compassion. And it all stems from Ozai being depicted (dare I say) even better than the OG show because atleast in the Netflix series there is a method to his madness. He's a sick and cruel father, but a father nonetheless that was trying to make his son fit to be a ruler, he did it via pain and suffering because that's the only way he knew how to raise a child.

I agree with you actually on your assessment with Ozais Netflix depiction. Ozai in the OG cartoon I would argue to be much more 1 dimensional than how he’s been here in Netflix’s Book 1 since cartoon Ozai has had next to no personal look into his character besides being the evil big bad Aang has to defeat to save the world. But at least here, Netflix is giving us an expanded onlook into Ozais character and a bigger dynamic between him and Zuko

I love this additional scene between them so much. Aang is of course going to use every opportunity to try to befriend the dude that's always trying to capture him, and poor Zuko is just going to have to sit there dazedly and be friendship smothered by this optimistic kid. 😂

In the animated show, Zuko lashes out almost immediately after waking up. I like the take on this scene better in the Netflix show. It was almost like Zuko went back to being a normal teenager for a moment until Aang brought up Ozai...then BOOM!

I think it does it worse. The animated version is essentially the scene after Zuko wakes up for the second time in the live action. In the animated version Zuko actually ponders Aang’s question. Could they really have been friends? This is a classic case of show vs tell. The entire first conversation of live action is summed up with a look on Zuko’s face in animation.

Completely agree with you. I came to this video cause a KZfaqr who was comparing the original vs Netflix said they do actually like the small addition of Zuko’s actions physically pushing him away from Aang on the boat. But I still agree, in the animated show, Zuko doesn’t immediately attack Aang when he wakes up. He actually listens however briefly, then goes on the offence without a word, after contemplating Aang’s thoughtful question. And yes, when Zuko softens his eyes as Aang leaps away says EVERY thing. More than this dictionary of a scene from the Netflix adaption. Sorry, I’m such a ATLA fan 😭

Cartoon was more emotionally deeper. Zuko's reaction and expression was all you needed to capture his turmoil. Live-action prefers to "tell and show" rather than "show and tell" Less is more.

Their conversation is very cute. A little strange at times, when Aang asks him what brush he uses.😂 But as a huge fan of Zuko's character's psychological journey and redemption, I really enjoy this scene.

This was one of the best scenes. It's amazing to see live actors and their subtle facial and body gestures. There are so many emotions and quick changes in their emotions displayed in the focusing of a gaze and a twinge in a cheek.

I hope that they make a season 2. I know that there's some things that's different from the original show, but this one is really good too I think. This is my favorite part in this one because I really like their conversation. I think it's a good foreshadowing for when Zuko switches sides. I also really like the blue spirit part. This is definitely my favorite episode in the live action show.

I really hope they listen to all the fan feedback and criticism for the next seasons. I enjoyed this show and even loved it on the first watch but I won't deny its flaws. A lot of the kids in this are still new to acting so they can only keep improving. The writing forsure needs a big improvement tho.

I love the hated rivals turn friends arc. Usually a bad boy or girl starts out as a jerk or a villain wanting to crush the lovable goofball hero into pieces mostly because they can’t stand them. But as the season goes on they have a change of heart and goes to character development a become healthier version of ourselves while still have some of their jerky traits, they become friends with the hero.

Probably my favourite scene that is not from the original animated show. They are trapped in this situation so Aang being an innocent kid decides to spark a conversation whereas Zuko is trying to hold back any form of conversing with the “enemy”. Once Zuko finally gives in it shows that they could easily be friends under different circumstances. Amazing foreshadowing for their inevitable friendship.

It kinda sucks how they seemingly wanted to take away Zuko’s villain status In the og show Zuko blasts Aang and Aang shoots out of there like a bat out of hell. Zuko is in control of the scene even with his mixed emotions on the Fire Nation. While here Aang counters and is left standing strong while Zuko is left looking weak slowly drifting away on the boat.

IMO.. This is way too soon for Aang and Zuko to have a heart to heart, and basically telling eachother their whole stories and traumas right away is very heavy handed and blows the load on Zuko’s eventual turn to light way too soon. “If I catch you I can go home.” What?? I cringe hearing that like Zuko at this point should be too far gone to try to explain himself to Aang and smile and laugh with him. They need to actually let Zuko be a villain. because that will make it so much more satisfying when he actually figures himself out and turns to the light. He can have vulnerable moments, but having it with Aang THIS early just doesn’t work..

Like one comment iterated, less is more. Zuko at this stage was NOT ready to have this heart-to-heart, he still sees Aang as The Avatar, an objective, whence he all but Insta! Trigger! shoots Aang, albeit there's another element to Zuko's doing so, almost as if he means to... ward Aang off from _putting ideas in his head,_ he's not supposed to have such Thoughts™ XD; we nevertheless *_do_* see that at some level Aang's word got to him, quite literally, Zuko we see raises his eyebrow in thought as Aang runs off and later he's atop his bed, His Imperial Highness _turns his back to the Fire Nation flag,_ an anguished look to his face, like he's rummaging in thought. It's short and to the point. They tried to give their own spin to this scene and I would've respected that, but then they also had Aang repeat his lament from the OG show word for word and it just didn’t land, it's clunky, it's awkward.

This. Guy saved Aang cause HE wanted to get the glory. He wasn’t just gonna let him go after escaping the base. It wasn’t a friendly favor in the slightest. So for them to just have a chat after?? Yeah seems the writers didn’t realize that Zuko wasn’t saving Aang out of the kindness of his heart.

As a child I loved the cartoon and I still love it today. And I must say that the Netflix series did a decent job❤❤ This scene is one of my favorites in the Netflix adaption❤️ I just love the dynamic between Aang and Zuko🔥🌪

Definitely one of the best scenes of the live action without a doubt. This, 41st division as the crew, and iroh war crimes discussion with the earth kingdom soldier are some really solid improvements

Actually Zuko's notebook seems to have three separate handwriting styles. Looks like the creative department just put a bunch of stuff into the same page. One of the handwriting styles is actually rather unkempt. The first time Aang steals Zuko's book on the ship, I paused to read it, and I thought, ugh, Prince boy has untidy handwriting. So if Aang's is really worse than that.......

I liked this reaction vs zuko attacking Aang as soon as he woke up. I know he wants to go home and prove his father wrong about him, but your both still people and deserve respect first

This is a good change as both characters can know each other long before the finale. In the animated series,at this point,Zuko attacks Aang because suddenly he remember that the boy was his enemy at that point. Here,he's like,"Well,he did save me from Zhao after I was knocked down,so I gonna make more or less a truce and be peaceful with him" until the snap. It makes more sense later in Book 3 when Zuko says that Aang saw good on him when he rescue him from Zhao because again,in the original he suddenly attacks Aang after hearing about Kuzon and I think you can't see something good on someone if it suddenly attacks you after you save him.

I just realized something Zuko having to do brush strokes so much... eventually paid off for when Piandao trained him for a time I hope they get to touch on that in this series too, when they inevitably have Sokka also train under Piandao

Perhaps they might become allies by Season 2 onward rather than Season 3 and considering some of the storyline differences this would be no surprise either. Whether some different character romances change however though, that is another matter altogether here.

The craziest thing about Aang and Zuko is, if you watch the animated series, they COULD almost be related as Aang was Roku before and Roku is related to Zuko through his mother.

What I like about this series is not so the quality or acting ... but I must say it does something else... when I watched the cartoon for the first time, I didn't think much about it. When you think things through, a lot of the things in this show weigh a lot heavier like the loss of life, Zuko's desperation in his attempt to please his father, Aang's sadness and frustration over having lost everyone he once knew... and so on. I feel like a live action film or series with real humans as actors can portrait the severeness and magnitude of some of those things a lot better than comic characters ever could. Although of course cartoons can deal with important and mature topics quite well, they will always have this bit of "childish stain", which this series has to a much lesser extent. Great show just because of the well presented conflict and nostalgia.
