"How to rust print material quickly and easily" is a complete tutorial video filmed informally in my home - where I take you through the whole process of rust printing a linen scarf. Using rusty chicken wire and simple ingredients, it is possible to achieve awesome results quickly and with confidence of getting a great, colourful outcome. With lots of variations of browns and rich rusts and oranges, the shapes of the prints will depend on what you use to impart rust, and this can include wire, rusty tools, rusted shapes and cans ... the list is almost endless.
I have included a list of items I've used. And for your convenience, I've included Amazon links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
I had a lot of fun rust printing the linen scarf and I am sure you will find it is a great creative technique that you can use on clothes, felted scarves, and other natural material.
INGREDIENTS USED:
* Rusty chicken wire OR rusty nails
TO MAKE RUSTY NAILS, put lots of nails into a large jar and cover them with 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Put a lid on the jar and leave for two weeks.
* Nails amzn.to/3d6Ctu0
* Jar with lid amzn.to/3uGk11d
* Vinegar amzn.to/2Qcw5bF
TO MAKE RUSTY CHICKEN WIRE is the same process but use a container amzn.to/3taUyNh large enough for the chicken wire.
* Material (light coloured pre-dyed linen) amzn.to/2OCY6Zt
* Bucket amzn.to/3mKqcig
* White vinegar amzn.to/2Qcw5bF
* String amzn.to/3seX8Ra
* Cling wrap amzn.to/2PMG4oq
* Salt amzn.to/3a05oho and measuring jug amzn.to/3g7BOut
* Water
* Wire cutting pliers amzn.to/3a20fWl
* Rubber gloves amzn.to/3uHQTH6
* Steamer pan amzn.to/2Rsb4dN

@@CraftingVicky oh yes, you're right! Sorry lol! As with all natural dyeing and printing you will find they fade over time. Then you can just reprint over them! However I have found that the deeper rust prints lasted well. Just make sure you rinse your tee well after printing to get all the rust off You don't want it on your skin and also, it can be quite harsh on the fibres. 🙂

@@AannshaJones Natural dyeing should not fade any more than regular dyeing, if the natural dye itself is lightfast (berries and rootbeets are not lightfast, for example) and if you have used a mordant for protein fibres or soda ash for cotton. I don't know if vinegar has something to do with making metal rust quicker or what it is, but vinegar is the total opposite of what cotton or any plant based fabric needs to make dye stick to the fibres. Cotton needs high ph for dyeing, and vinegar has low ph. So I guess the vinegar will make the natural dye fade and wash out. Try soaking in a soda ash solution instead of vinegar, that should work much better. Natural dyes have been used for thousands of years, and if used correctly, the fabric or yarn should not fade or wash out more than commercial dyes.
@AannshaJones
@AannshaJones 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your valuable input R. Thomassen. I do agree with you in terms of the different mordants for plant fabrics and often use alum (potassium aluminum sulfate) for tee shirts. Vinegar is my choice for wool felt and silk fabrics but this time I used it more to assist with the rust as you supposed. I actually made this video on the spur of the moment as you will have seen, and used the chemicals I had at hand in the kitchen. I was very pleased with the outcome and it has lasted well. Thank you for your comments.

@AannshaJones
@AannshaJones 6 жыл бұрын
Swagmuffin It is fairly strong although like any natural dye it will eventually fade. But I have found mine lasted ages. A lot will depend on how often you wash, what laundry detergent you use, whether you dry it in direct sunlight etc. You would want to ensure it is washed thoroughly before wearing though. I'd suggest trying it on an old piece of clothing then wash and wear as usual and see for yourself. 🙂
