This was before the Internet "kicked in" and dashed my dreams of becoming the "Father of Modern Email". Thank you Patrick for finding this.

What a beautiful machine, terrible shame it came to the market a bit late. It still carries features that are desirable in my opinion, between the easy access through a phone line and overall protection of messages. Awesome to see a video segment thought to be lost to time. :D

We're so gonna need these when the internet goes down.

Had this come out in the 80's it couldve been a big hit but by the late 90's AOL, Yahoo, and Hotmail had pretty much cornered the market with free email.

What do you do to avoid making Gates richer every day?

I remember back in the 90s there were some dedicated email machines but they were not machine to machine - but machine to server. You still had to know and document email addresses. This is more like a dedicated secure sms system instead of email because it was peer to peer and not peer to server. I could see this being useful in a distributed office environment at the time. Or a special system for a small business or execs. It is too bad it never took off. Lotus notes and/or lotus cc:mail was extremely popular in the mid to late 90s. But in the 80s and early 90s there really wasn't an office messaging system. This could have done the job! Thanks for posting Aaron!

That's right..It was very important to me to make it, what they called, "peer to peer" so that nothing stood in the way and a layer of complication was removed. There were also layers of complications removed in the disk operating system that made it extremely fast.
@bkraft7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was also much more secure. Unix mail at the time was completely open to any admin on the server. The only way to have secure e-mail at the time was to fiddle with PGP encryption. Remember all the public keys on e-mail? Since your invention was machine to machine, I could see it catching on with execs and businessmen.

I also think the custom OS and custom modem handshake / protocol is the most impressive.

Hate to burst your bubble, but that's a light pen, which was already a thing. That sort of technology is also used in the NES Zapper and other such peripherals.

When it started development in 1982 it made a good deal of sense and would probably changed the market but by 1996 it was just to late. I do wonder what would have come of this if it just came out a few years earlier.
