War Dog Reunites With His Best Friend

Military working dogs undergo rigorous training. They are taught to detect explosives, to sniff out drugs and to assist soldiers and police officers in some of the most dangerous situations in the world. Consequently, the bond formed between a handler and a dog is unique, a bond that surpasses that of mere pet and owner. When Staff Sgt. Angela Lowe started working with Szultan, a grumpy German shepherd with a bone-crushing bite, she knew the training would require a lot of time and patience. But once things clicked, their relationship solidified, and Lowe knew she could rely on Szultan. The constant wear and tear on her body from training dogs eventually forced Lowe to retire from the Air Force, but over the years, she never stopped thinking about Szultan, and when she got the call that the dog was being retired, she knew she had to find a way to bring him home. Unable to drive down to Joint Base Charleston to retrieve him, Lowe contacted Mission K9 Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to rehoming military working dogs. As they have done for countless other dogs, Mission K9 cofounders Kristen Mauer and Louisa Kastner stepped in to reunite Szultan and Lowe. To learn more about Mission K9 Rescue and to support its work, go to missionk9rescue.org.

These dogs are heroes. They do so much and go into more dangerous situations without being given a choice. They risk their lives to keep us safe. I’m so glad they are now being reunited with their handlers. I don’t see how once they leave the military they can’t be given a ride to their handlers. That should be a given as thanks for them risking their lives. Bless these dogs! 💜💕❤️🙏🌈💜💕❤️🙏🌈

It’s criminal that these dogs and their handlers can’t just be discharged together as a pair. It shouldn’t cost the veterans mounds of paper work, hundreds of dollars and several months to unite these separated soldiers. It should be automatic. And I agree, the government should pay for their medical bills for life.

@Danie Erasmus I’m sure they do, but retired dogs are just an additional expense to the government to just hang on to or worse - euthanize. These dogs are veterans as much as human soldiers and deserve the respect of a soldier. Some of these dogs have saved the lives of human soldiers and should be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. I’m not ragging on you, I know you agree - I’m just passionate about this issue. I feel the same about war horses - I don’t even know if they still use horses anymore in any capacity….
@deborahjeanne2141
@deborahjeanne2141 Жыл бұрын
@Danie Erasmus service dogs are a valuable asset. If you have one, you’re a lucky soldier. And I fully understand why the government would not want to give up a dog still able to serve. I’m talking about retired dogs, though, that no longer serve a purpose for the government. I have not heard anything about the horses unless I’m not looking hard enough. The movie “War Horse” had me in tears. Sobbing uncontrollably was more like it. Thank you, Danie, for protecting us. I hope you stay protected for the remainder of your tour, and that soon we can say, “welcome home, brother.” 😘

Ireland is a neutral country and we wouldn’t have a military draft, apart from some a peacekeeping regiments and emergency personnel. So I think my fellow Irish user above was just saying that even though we don’t have army veterans or people who would engage in such conflict, we can still fell empathy and the bond between a military veteran and their bonded dog. The Military Working DOG is a veteran. I'm a 26 year veteran. When I retired I was still a veteran. The MWD When she/he retires they go from veteran to pet and not entitled to join the veteran who wants her/him at government expense, WHY? Is it because they have 4 legs and fur? They served in life threatening situations with their human and DESERVES to be treated as any other veteran. The military, out of gratitude for there dedication and love for there humans, should reunit the veteran with there mate at government expense. We OWE these 4 legged, fur coated HEROS . "The more people I know, the more I like my dogs." -- Mark Twain, although others have stated similar sentiments going back to 1800 or so. So, Army veteran here. I understand why the military can't afford to let a working dog stick to one handler for either the dog's nor the handler's careers. The demands on MWDs and their handlers is **not** the same as those of a police dog, even if the dog and handler are in fact MPs. You can't be a platoon sergeant with an active working dog, for example. The time constraints on both jobs cancel each other out. Rescue K9 is an **awesome** group. I'm glad the laws were changed to give the dogs a chance to retire in peace and the handlers to live in peace with the dogs that saved their lives.

These dogs and their handler should be allowed to remain together for life. They’re not just a tool or piece of kit. There’s a bond between the two like nothing else. It can only be truly understood by those who have been in a position to serve with their K9 battle buddy.

Whether you raise a dog from a pup, or work with a dog professionally there is a special bond there. Lost my girl recently (Shep/chow mix) and god damn I miss her. I have so much respect for these people and what they do, these dogs deserve to spend their last years with someone they shared a bond with.

Great story. The common public really don't understand these dogs are beasts and are trained to the fullest. Many can't handle being turned off. They can't just be with anyone and be a pet. That actually goes for working line dogs period. Glad you got him. Awesome for both of you!!!!!

I actually cried from listening to this lady speak about her love for a dog. I can understand the emotional side of it as I lost my Pomeranian dog at age 14 about 3 years ago. I still haven’t really recovered from this. My Pomeranian was my companion dog and was always with me since I live on my own. He was very intelligent and I trained him to listen to commands. He knew about 15 different stuffed animals. When I would scold him he would pick up a small doggie biscuit and put it by my foot as if to apologize and say I’m sorry. I always cry when I think about him but, I guess they’re not here for a long time so it’s so important to be good to your dogs, cats or whatever pet you have as once they’re gone you will only have memories. In my memories I still cry 😢 but I know my dog and I will meet one day again though it sounds unreal but the love we hold is real. I’m so happy she got to get Sultan back as she loved and had patience to handle him. I pray he is around for a while with her. I applaud her courage and thank her for her service to our country USA 🇺🇸. I’m so happy her wishes were granted and may God protect her and this wonderful dog who served our country as well. Lots of prayers from New York and good luck to her in her career 🙏🦮🙏🙏🙏🐕🙏🙏🙏👍👍🙏🙏
