Here's a rough pack shakedown of the gear that I used on my Australian Alps Walking Track sobo adventure in Autumn 2024. I filmed this almost as soon as I got home and it is exactly what I carried. Keep in mind that this is far from a definitive gear list for the AAWT - this is just what worked (and didn't) for me.

Thank you for generously sharing your thoughts on your gear. Helps a lot to get proper field tested gear insights. The AAWT is a decent testing ground for gear.

No problem Bill. You are right about the AAWT being a good test of gear… it’s exposed to a lot out there🤔

Thoroughly enjoying your perspective on this. It's giving me some insight for planning my month of hiking in Tassie. Just a heads up, Tier Gear have passed on the manufacturing of the Quenda quilts, Boodie Down Blankets, and rain skirts to Zero G Gear in the Southern Highlands, NSW. They've been collaborating and he's hoping to be ready to make the Quenda Quilts in the next month or so. Tearloch (Zero G) sounds like a great guy.

Great video and great series. Thanks for the gear review- it helps all of us refine our gear. Any hope of a food review? Disregard -just heard the end of your vid. Looking forward to the log side of things video.

I don’t think I go a lot into food on the logistics video’s - I do touch on it however I think it’s something that I could go into a bit more detail on 🤔

Check out the NZ Natural Clothing polyprop/possum fur fingerless gloves. Can combine with merino glove liners and/or overmitts. Fingerless gloves with flip mitten covers also work great in snow. The old Bridgedale Trail socks rocked. I think they called Hike now.

Thanks for the heads up for the gloves… I’ll definitely check them out👍

thanks for that - always helpful to hear the experience of others. On cold hands - I've found the combination of a pair of cheap light gloves (Kathmandu, I think) with a pair of waterproof lightweight Montaine overmits works well.

Thanks Peter. Yes, I’ve got some gortex overmits - I’ll give then a go next time I think👍

@@goinferal5815 I figure you have tried most combinations. You must have a shed just for hiking gear!

Cheers… no one else to talk to on a lot of these walks so I may as well talk to the camera😉

What I do for my head torch is I keep a little bit of electrical tape covering one of the contacts so it can't discharge. Far from ideal though.

Folding the cover back on itself isn’t ideal either… it seems to be working so far though👌

If I'm feeling paranoid I'll just flip one of my batteries back to front

@@jamesmarshmallow5602 I don't know if this could be a problem, but I could envisage that not being compatible with some electrical circuits.

I've just returned from a failed attempt at the Scottish National Trail, so my ears perked up at the mention of Rab gear and visits to Scotland. Did you do any big hikes over there?

I did the West Highland Way if that counts as big😉 I’d love to do Cape Wrath one day🤞 the Scottish National Trail is also on my radar too👍

@@goinferal5815 all good trails. Thoroughly recommend the CWT. Although not as tough as the AAWT, it is none the less a real adventure in the wild.
