I have another Toyota with code P0983, the truck went into failsafe maybe once every 2-3 days, when he brought the truck to me, we drove it around and actually did not go into failsafe for me. I show what I did to confirm the solenoid was the problem. This is a 2WD truck from Florida, no bolts broke while dropping the pan. Thanks for watching.

Nice work Gary, hopefully if the customer ever needs the pan down again the bolts won't all break off.

I'm experiencing this same code on a 2011 sequoia 4x4 right now with the external trans connector that been filled/ satterated dripping dirty(dark) ATF off of it as soon as I unplugged it. I'm just going to replace the whole internal harness with connector and s4 solenoid with new fluid and hope it fixes it.. Thanks for your videos Gary!

Interesting, great video and excellent problem solving Gary, the customer didn't need to waste their $$$$$ on other shops guessing. Seems like a time consuming procedure if they need to order that could take close to a week. Funny you mention NY rust because i watch South Main Auto channel in upstate NY, he is always complaining and showing how quickly things get rusty there. My 96 ZJ is getting crusty underneath, floor pans developing more than a little scaling but not weak yet. I changed the ball joints about a year ago and when finished i think there was 5 pounds of rust on the ground from the rusty front end parts getting hammered. I must admit ALL my ZJ trans pan bolts were fine and came out with no issues but the pan itself was pretty rusty so at a service i replaced it with a factory pan i found on ebay then i went to Lowes and got all new SS allen head bolts and washers, something about those factory Mopar pan gaskets, they never weep or leak, must be the way it compresses? Its like a stiff composite gasket not cork

That's the way to go, I do not like cork gaskets, they split to easy

Great info. Great idea exposing solenoid to heat. As you know solenoids are part resistor part inductor. The resistance should increase with heat as all resistors do, but the behavior seen by the faulty solenoid indicates degradation of internal conductive material. I suspect given time the solenoid would go completely open. My 07 tundra has this same issue. Being a MN/ND truck i suspect i will have broken bolts. What did you do to get them out? EZ outs?
@GaryFerraro
@GaryFerraro Жыл бұрын
I drill them out and put Heli coils with new bolts. you could try using some heat too

Nice! I worked with Toyota for 10 years and the most frustrating thing is that the guy naming and labeling the parts never talked with the guy that wrote the service manual. Kind of like speaking a different language. Very frustrating.

Do you ever do a current draw test by setting your dvom to at least 10 amp dc . Wire the dvom and solenoid in series and power it with a jump start box for 5 seconds. The amp draw should start high then drop slightly. I can do this with care at the disconnected computer harness without needing to tear down to get to solenoids. Using multiple pages of the wiring diagram to find bad solenoids. You may also want to pick up a tube of permatex flange dressing #85420. To use as antiseize on the bolts . Its unaffected by automotive fluids. Good for 500f. And never gets fully hard. Should work perfect. You might check out the hf dvom that is their old stock. It has an unfused 20Amp dc setting that I use a lot.. our old forum we met on is totally gone. I have been over on reddit mechanicadvice now. Good to see you posting. Just did a countach clutch. What a nightmare. But it came out perfect. Parts are crazy $. No more of those. 0.010" step on the flywheel was right for that setup. That is not in any manual. I probably should have gone 0.012" step fyi.

You wouldn't have any vids on testing the harness? My truck got a shock and all kinds of electrical issues now. Would love to check the harness BEFORE opening the pan. Even though I do have this code on my AB60F. Cheers

Gary, thank you for creating this video. I have a 2008 Sequoia that threw P0983 last week. When it initially threw the code, it wouldn't shift past 4th gear. On the next two drives the dash lights stayed on but the truck shifted normal. On the third start up, the dash lights were gone. I drove it to the Toyota dealer to run a diagnostic test on it, and they confirmed that the code was for the solenoid. I purchased the solenoid online from another dealer and planned on doing the replacement myself. While I wait for the solenoid in the mail, the truck has shifted normally all week at speeds from slow to highway. It hasn't thrown the code again. Do you recommend I replace the solenoid anyway or return it? I'd hate to drop the pan and mess with it if this was a one-off code throw. Any ideas of why it would throw a one-off code would be much appreciated. Recommendations? Thank you.

Hi Gary, you are doing an awesome job, it makes me want to open and start rebuilding ZF transmissions. Quick question, I have a BMW X3, 99000 miles, transmission is perfect, the oil was never changed, should I change it and what is the best way ? The dealer doesn’t recommend it

@@fountainblueautorepairing that happened to me once on a 4R75E and turned out that the parts guy gave me a band for a 4L80E. It fit perfectly and made me look like an idiot (which I was at that moment) by simply not checking myself. Good luck friend.
