The upper row of beads are of value 5 and the lower beads are each of value 1 so basically in the starting if you notice to display 7 on abacus he puts one upper bead down(value - 5) and two lower beads (1+1= 2) so in total (5+2= 7) hope you got it still its the most basic level. Just to make you understand how it happens hope you got it!! Abacus is a great tool btw but needs a lot of time and consistency.

In exams they don't allow calculater. So knowing abacus is immensely helpful

@tamil._.kritshna they do allow calculators. One example is trigonometry... schools require calculators and if you're in a higher learning class for your grade then you need to learn how to calculate sin cos tan without the calculator (but it is still provided during exams)

The way US math is based on a 10 unit, the 100 bead abacus with 10 rows seems easier to me. But this is interesting.

Damn I thought 🤔💭 this was easy until I watched this video. Hell I never even used an Abacus in school. We had a calculator. But this way of doing math would of been more fun for the students. Since it felt like they could touch the number, instead of doing in their head or on paper. Lol ppl think I'm weird cause whenever I add stuff up when shopping I always add it up in my head, before the clerk can. Or if she made a mistake I'd already know how much in difference I'm owed etc. while they take time to pull out a calculator & add / subtract the numbers.
