In this video I go over key differences in the 80 Series Land Cruiser and what you should look out for when buying one. I also tell you which 80 series is the best for you and the best one to buy.
This is a detailed buyer’s Guide to the 1991 - 1997 FJ80 FZJ80 and the LX450.
This info was take from different forums and different online guides to take a deeper look into the subject I suggest looking at this article by Slee Offroad
sleeoffroad.com/tech-zone/80-series-newbie-guide/
Here is a quick overview
US models
The first model of the 80 Series imported to the US was the 1991 model. This model was sold until 1992. 1993 saw the introduction of the new 4.5 L motor. In 1995, the dash was updated to include airbags and this model ran until 1997, which was the last year of the 80 Series. Below is a list of major specifications and changes that were made.
FJ80 1991-1992
First major wagon body re-design since the 1980 introduction of the 60
series.
3FE 4.0L engine and A440F automatic transmission held over from the 62 series wagons.
Introduction of full time, four wheel drive system.
Introduction of all coil suspension for the wagons.
15″ x 7″ alloy wheels standard and unique to ’91-92 but the same as SR5 mini-truck wheels
front disk / rear drum brakes with FF front and SF rear axles
third row seats available for the first time
no airbags available
no ABS brake system available
no factory lockers available
FZJ80 1993-1994
Introduction of 16″ wheels.
Rear axle changes to full floater with disk brakes when equipped with ABS
Also gets viscous coupling HF2AV transfer case versus
non-viscous HF2A transfer case for drum braked 80’s (and fj80’s)
Introduction of 4.5l 24 valve motor.
Front and Rear factory lockers become an option.
Automatic transmission - Electronic Controlled A442Fwith mechanical lockup converter
Somewhere in 1993 the AC system changed from R12 to R134. With the R12 systems the dryer unit was in front of the battery and with the R134 it moved to behind the bumper. Might have been in 1993
The thickness of the drive plates on the front hubs were increased after April 1994 (build date). The new drive flange number is 43421-60040 and the old one is 43421-60022. If you try to install an earlier birfield into a later truck, you will not be able to install the circlip on the end of the axle shaft.
Supercharger systems now available for 1993-1994 models.
Front ABS Lines are routed on the front control arm.
Radiator is a 3 row brass core.
FZJ80 1995-1997
1996 saw the introduction of the Lexus LX450 Model.
Exhaust system changed from side by side catalytic converters to in-line converters. The exhaust also routes below the frame rail just behind the catalytic converters to avoid excessive heat on the passenger floor-boards.
Front grill changed from the word TOYOTA written across the front to the new Toyota symbol.
Headlight mounts are different from 1991-1994 vs. 1995-1997 and will not interchange.
Redesigned dash board with airbags as standard equipment.
Headliner changed to two piece molded units.
Emission system on engine changes. Changed from a Mass Air Pressure meter to a Mass Air Flow meter. Certain plumbing was also removed.
Supercharger & Turbo systems available for 1995-1997 models.
ECU updates and truck became voluntary OBD-II compatible. Fully compatible in 1996 models.
Wheel Lug nuts change from conical to washer type.
Airbags become standard
Automatic transmission changes to the A343F. Some 95’s were produced with the A442F. The transmission type is printed on the label on the driver door.
1997 saw the introduction of the 40th Anniversary editions as well as the Collectors Series.
1997 the rear swaybar brackets that attach the bar to the frame were changed from a plate side that attached to the side of the frame to a bracket style that attached to the bottom of the frame.
ABS wires on the front were moved upward and no longer run down the front control arm.
Radiator is a 2 row aluminum
40th Anniversary Specifications
Two Tone leather seats
Serialized symbol on center console.
40th Anniversary floor mats
40th Anniversary emblems
Black Chrome badging
Available in Sage and Green colors only
Auto climate control

I apologize for my ignorance during the making of this video... the 105 Series LC was the last of the solid front axle. I meant no disrespect to all the other countries that received that wonderful vehicle.

Only problem is everyone wants to buy it off me -) You guys over there only got the petrols, my slow and steady diesel is legendary for reliability. In a quarter of century it has NEVER let me down. The U.S. spec FZJ80 was only available with a 4-speed automatic, A442 and A343 respectively if I'm not mistaken. . A 5-speed manual was offered in other markets outside the U.S. for the 80 series. The 5-speed automatic came along in late 2002 for the 2003 model year of the UZJ100. Early 92 production FZJ80 models came with drum brakes in the rear, some had semi-float rear axles and up until 95, ABS was an optional. These oddball models are few and far between as most U.S.-spec cruisers were ordered with almost all of the available options at the time. Good basic introduction video to the 80 series! It gets very technical after the basics for the 80 series platform.

I'm in Melbourne Australia and have a 1992 FJ80R DX model or as I'm told it's called the "Povo Pack" as it has vinyl flooring, 1hz non-turbo diesel, 5sp manual free-wheeling hubs and No electric windows, No locking diffs, No 3rd row seats or sliding windows etc..... but I love it and it does me what I want from it as a daily driver and tourer. It has however got a 2.5" lift and 33's, rock sliders, bullbar and winch which is pretty much all I need for it.

Thanks for this video. I've held on to my 95 FZJ80 as a second car for many years now. Almost sold it a couple times. Glad I still have it and I've been enjoying taking special care of it lately. It only has 140K miles on it, so the rising value has gotten my attention. Probably just going to keep it and enjoy the ride though. I like the new found interest in these vehicles. It's funny to me that I'm still learning more about them today. I'm finally paying attention!

Thanks for the nice video. Yes, as pointed out below the 105 has solid axles and was produced until 2007. Several variations, very rare in the US I understand. UN used them in large numbers, well known in SA, Russia, Aus and all over the developing world. So people like to say it's an 80 underneath and a 100 on top. Mine has triple lockers, 4.2L diesel manual, air bags, full time 4x4, 1HZ engine, 2 tanks as standard. It's underpowered, lacking character perhaps, but it's the dog's bollocks for long distances in rough conditions.

Hey Man, Good video and information. My neighbor daily drives a triple locked FZJ80 with a 6" lift and 35" x 12.5" M/T tires on the stock wheels. His wife daily drives an 99 LX470. He also has a 2016 LX570 and a 40 series. Then again he also is the owner of a very successful LandCruiser restoration shop where I'm at in NW South Carolina. I'm plotting my course to buy a 97 FZJ80 or LX450. My plans are to do a Cummins 6BT swap with the factory automatic. Keep up the good posts.

A slight correction... Firstly the subsequent 100 series could also be had with a solid front axle - it was called the 105,but maybe not in North America Also outside the US the not all 80 series came with full time 4x4. I have the 3rd world version here in South Africa. (1997) It has a carburettor 1FZ and part time 4x4 with locking front hubs. Also no ABS or airbags. It loses out in torque / power above 2800 rpm but that doesn't matter for what I do with it. I specifically bought the carburettor version because it copes better with bad fuel and there is no electronics to drown or go wrong.

I tried to kill my '91 FJ80 every which way possible so I could justify getting an FZJ80. I simply couldn't bring it down! It was like a young bull. Then when I found a triple locked '97 FZJ80 with 167k miles, I sold it for $500 just to get rid of it. That was stupid! Love my '97 LC, but should have kept that under powered, super reliable '91 LC. We had crazy adventures together in the deserts of California. I miss it very much! Anyway, this '97 is going to the grave with me. It's my pride and joy, on the pavement and on gravel. In essence, both of these are amazing vehicles that are in their elements in the toughest of terrains. Nice video, BTW!

I just bought a 92’ Land Cruiser 100% rust free (desert truck) for $3,000. Runs great, we just did a 350 miles road trip on deep snow and I am in love with the 80 series. I’m looking for a TDI swap because the gas mileage is awful. A TDI can put out 180whp and 330wtq. (Better than the 150/227 from the 4.0 3FE).

My parents bought a 97 LX450 which I bought from them a few years ago. It has almost 300k on the odo and still chugs. Has 25-year-old-car problems every now and then but yet to be any thing all that expensive.

Twin locked* the center diff lock isn't a locker in terms of a diff lock, it just makes the vehicle a 4wd rather than the awd it otherwise is.

I've noticed that the 1996 year fzj80 has been the absolute most popular year. I've saved so many 1995 - 1997 land cruisers on auto trader and other sites and the 1996's are becoming very few to null. 😒😔

I think Toyota should bring back the Hilux sr5, it's one of the most beloved Toyota vehicles ever! Just like they did with the FJ cruiser, but keeping it closer to the original, but use more modern materials like aluminum (to solve the rust problem). In Australia Toyota has various modern versions of legacy vehicles, if they bring back the Sr5 Hilux It Will sell ALOT, cause alot of people love these trucks, but as time goes by they inevitably become harder to find and more expensive

a bit of Correction, the 80 can run 46´ tires but at risk of braking the front diff but it has good axles the 60 is the other way around where the diff is strong but axles weak and transmissions are a weak point of the 80

Australia didn't get the FJ80, only the FZJ in the petrol models. Even then the diesel HZJ80 outsold the petrol ones about 70% to 30% and the resale value of a FZJ is less and are very hard to sell. The one to own which is like winning lotto here is the HDJ80.
