Buchanan Castle is a ruined castle in Stirlingshire, Scotland, located 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the village of Drymen. The house was commissioned by The 4th Duke of Montrose and built in 1852-1858 as a home for the Montrose family, serving as such until 1925. It was built as a replacement for Buchanan Auld House, which is located 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to the northwest but was destroyed in a fire in 1852. The old house and surrounding lands had been the property of the Clan Buchanan but passed to the Clan Graham in the late 17th century. The surrounding lands were in the possession of the Clan Buchanan from at least 1231, but the direct chiefly line failed in 1682. Cousins of the Buchanan family, the Du Brul's, are the remaining family. Significant debt had been inherited by 22nd Chief John Buchanan and during his chiefship, the Buchanan estate was gradually sold to satisfy creditors. The estate was bought by The 3rd Marquess of Montrose (1657-1684), whose son became The 1st Duke of Montrose in 1707. The Montrose family occupied the existing Buchanan Auld House and this eventually replaced Mugdock Castle as the seat of Clan Graham, being seen as a dwelling more fitting the title of Marquess. The original house was substantially rebuilt from approximately 1724.

This breaks my heart seeing all those castles like this ,why didnt anyone take care of them amd allow this to happen to pieces of history . It's still beautiful as a ruin but it makes you wonder how beautiful it must have been amd all the things that have happened inside those walls hundreds of years ago

Simple. There is not enough demand for old luxury homes in remote areas. A part of people want to build a new house, a way larger part want to have a premium penthouse in a skyscraper.

Once lived close by to this castle. It had been vacant a half century.....so sad were the tax laws that allowed this to happen. It was used as a hospital post war. Many locals would be glad to share its history if you visit nearby Drymen including library archivists. The roof was removed to save paying taxes, how sad.

Wow, how massive! That castle must had been the largest and biggest castle in Scotland way back in those days. It must had been great to stand on the balcony of the turret to watch the land around..😍 Too bad, only ruins remain now😥

Wow! Amazing place! Nature will totally take that castle over, before too long! Funny how ‘they’ say that the stairs are carved rock, when it’s obviously cast concrete. But then people would begin to ask how THAT concrete is still in perfect condition and our modern day concrete doesn’t last 10 years! The rock structure is still in good shape! It’s a shame that someone doesn’t restore it. People with that kind of money would rather build these new mansions with no character. Truly a magical place. Beautiful castle, your beautiful accents, and the way the sun was rising, just added to the magic! Thank you for sharing!🙏🏻💕

We ALL loved💟it Alec. Love the Castle explores. We started saying, “NO” as your friend jumped the gap in the stairs. Once he cleared it - I said ,”Alec will do it - no problem.” I have a heights phobia and I started to get queezy when you guys came down. Too much for my skittish, chicken heart. Another great one. Too bad some millionaire doesn’t buy it and fix it up. What a Grand Castle it would be…👍🏻 Stay Well, Be Safe, & never loose your zest for exploring Alec. You the BEST‼️

It may have been damp in the basement, but its modern enough to have a 'tarry' damp course built in. When I was a wee laddie I had an ancient Buchanan kilt for Sundays. Not because of any Buchanan heritage, but because my mother liked the orange and yellow colouring.

This castle became a hospital during WW2 and among many patients was also Rudolf Hess, a high ranking politician of the Nazi party in Germany who was shot down by British forces over Scotland. He was send to Britain to negotiate a peace treaty with Britain because a victorious Germany looked increasingly more likely while Britain was surrounded by german forces.

Scotland is cool. You have ancient castles there. The oldest places we have here in California are old west ghost towns which, without any refurbishing, are falling apart faster than your castles. Someday I'm going to Scotland and see the land of my ancestors. Clan Baird. A lone piper playing during the drone footage at the end would have been awesome!

Thank you two fellas for sharing such an awesome exploration into a piece of history. A beautiful work of architecture that was shamefully left to ruin after WWII because of taxes. In 1954 the roof was removed so that it could no longer be taxed as a residence, and as seen in this video, sadly, the building has greatly deteriorated since that time. As for the history of this beautiful place, the 4th Duke of Montrose commissioned the house to be built, as a replacement for Buchanan Auld House, which is located half of a mile (0.80 km) to the northwest but was destroyed in a fire in 1850. The castle's foundation stone was laid in August 1850, yet construction for the castle major was started in 1852 finishing up in 1958. It was the residence of the Montrose family, serving as such until 1925. Buchanan Auld House and surrounding lands had been the property of the Clan Buchanan but in the late 17th century it passed to the Clan Graham. It remains the seat of the Clan Graham to this day and no Buchanan has ever lived in the castle and it's not a Clan establishment.
