this is probably a controversial statement for some, but i hate the culture of destroying or stealing from abandoned places like these some of the best parts of an abandoned structure is that it’s not only essentially frozen in time (save for the natural dilapidation), but you get the entire building to yourself for you to explore taking and destroying everything in it just ruins the experience for everyone else, and i don’t understand why one would waste their time doing so i appreciate that you take the measures you do to protect the integrity of the building, lord knows there are people out there who’d love to rip it down

Since windows 7 was published in 2009, and the computer was complaining about corrupted files, it was probably a glitch.

I'm a Michigan native & this just breaks my heart! Why didn't the people iin charge distribute these supplies to local small businesses starting out or low income families that can't even afford furniture! The people these donated items could have helped is endless! Not to mention, taking the money for heating & electricity for well over a decade could have been turned into grants for providing heat & electricity to countries homes shelters! This is why Detroit is in worse shape debt wise than before its 2014 "wiped clean" bankruptcy!

When I see old photos from people that are in an abandoned place, I always wonder.. What they’re doing right now?

As a retro PC and game enthusiast, i really wish there was a way to save those old monitors, CRT TVs, computers etc. Especially that cartridge of super mario world for SNES.

For anyone wondering why power and heat was still on they were probably doing an asbestos abutment on the building (asbestos is a harmful material that causes disease in lungs if breathed in) that is why there is debris that look like beaver grounds of paint and why the walls,floors and roofs are scraped down in most of his videos I highly recommend if you are going to explore old buildings make sure you wear proper protection because if he is not wearing a mask and half of the roof is scraped meaning the whole abait meant was not complete therefore there is likely asbestos in the building. They were probably having the heat and power on so the asbestos can get off the roof and floors easier so they will probably tear down that building very soon once the building is safe. Your welcome and stay safe ;) The steam tunnels were probably part of the abatement because they get the asbestos wet so it does not get suspended in the air

The power and heat are on for a reason. In order to maintain it, you need the hvac working. Otherwise, the pipes would freeze (and burst) in the winter. You also want the fire suppression system to still work, in case of a problem. But they also keep the buildings alarm system active. Thats to alert Detroit Public School Police (yes, they have a small police force) that there's an intruder on site.

It’s too bad. There is so much stuff that is still good and could be salvaged and used. The building itself though would take a lot of work at this point. For a building with heat and therefore not subject to temperature changes, it has significantly deteriorated more than I would have expected. It seems like there is water that has gotten in and wreaked havoc on the ceilings. I feel those steam tunnels are not supposed to be steam tunnels. I am thinking that there is a leak in the heating system somewhere and it’s pumping out steam. That would explain the ceiling and rotting floor. This building would possibly be in better condition if the heat WASN’T on. The fun thing about that is then it wouldn’t be costing thousands of dollars a year for running nothing! It is a total waste to be running the heat for what the building is now.

I really hope they don't throw away the computers and monitors and keyboards also that mario world game at 6:18 if you come back take the game and the snes (if you can find it)

Pressured steam is commonly used for heating of big buildings. It exchanges in boiler to hot water used in pipes. I guess that would be purpose of those tunnels.

The "steam tunnels" are just for heating and as someone else said they likely made the holes for asbestos abatement. Seeing this is detroit in many large cities you'll have a central boiler housed in a giant factory-like building (often called a "steam plant") instead of each building having its own boiler system. The steam from the central boiler is then piped throughout the city via underground pipes and into each building. I know here in Cleveland we have this type of setup and I actually know where the central boiler is. Sometimes you'll see steam coming up through manhole covers in the street and it stinks really bad. I'm not exactly sure what causes the smell but it's likely from the pipes being old and whatever contaminants are in the water before it's reaches boiling temperatures.

@True_explores - these Steam Tunnels at 18:52 are the remote heating system (just like in NYC) from the central heating/power plant to heat buildings with steam, usually their pipes are/were isolated with Asbestos ! ( I hope you shaved off all beard (as good as possible) & the mask seals well (full face mask recommended, especially for slim noses) & has P3/N100 filters & you did a thorough decontamination of your self (also the suit has to deal to the mask & wrists/gloves & boots) ... also possible Asbestos in: floor tiles, linolium, sound proofing, other pipes ( & maybe some electrical cables), paint ... also I would suspect lead paint ... mold is very normal, especially when the roof is leaking
