I often find old bits of tech that no one else seems to want. On my way to the train station, I found this old machine, sitting on the local community recycling table to Tausch Tisch. I couldn't leave it behind, so I grabbed it and away we went. The thing is, its filthy, something is rattling inside, and the side panel, well you'll see about that. Can it be saved, resurrected back to the land of the living? Let's find out.

if nothing else the PC has a great comedic timing with the loose side panel and the loose heatsink lol

Yeah. It knew exactly how to upstage me. At least I knew something was rattling inside that case! But the side falling off, all it’s own work.

I do love finding old PC’s and giving them a little love. I came across an old Zalman AMD case from the early 2000s that I may go back for! It was huge, expensive in its day, and for sale at €9,99. It’s tempting.

@@techdept I have a Zalman Z3 Plus case with i7 innards. I use it as an ‘everything’ emulation machine. It is a nice case though the feet were cheap plastic affairs that all broke and had to be replaced. €10 sounds like a steal.

Hey Dave. Thanks. I couldn’t screw up that landing, I’ve been a regular Flight Sim Journalist for 12 years. I’m an industry expert apparently! I’d argue that fact, but I do know y way around a sim. Oh and in 2 weeks, I’ve time On a Sunday to join your stream if you’ll let me!

Yeah. It was not planned. That was take 5 I think and the side fell off. I figured that was the best one to use :)

I knew someone would know. I really didn’t think that board was original but it works!

EMachines didn't have the purchasing power of dell to get their own motherboard designs produced. What they did is get a retail board modified for their use. They'd have the board stripped down, so you'd have lower quality components and missing features. They often used boards from Biostar, ECS, PC-Chips and more rarely, Pegatron (either ASRock or Asus since they were subsidiaries of Pegatron at the time.) They'd also have a custom BIOS made for their boards that locked out the more advanced features and disabled features that were removed from the boards. That being said, I doubt this is the original motherboard for that computer. The original board probably died and was replaced with this one.

Nice video, but at some point you make a statement like Windows XP is slow, (Of course, it still takes its time booting into the main screen, but yeah, that's windows XP for you) 09.55 - It boots slow the operating system because of the slow hardware, not because of Windows XP itself. Slow processor, slow and not enough RAM, and slow HDD. - and slow BUS on the mainboard connecting everything.

Hey, thanks for the comment, and you’re right. The machine is 20 years old, using hardware that should be in a museum. There’s only 256 mb of ram and a hard drive that’s probably seen better days. I think modern SSD’s and and multi core processors have spoiled me :)

3:45 - "maybe missing a piece" Nope, it's not missing anything, it really is that stupid of a design. You insert a flat blade screwdriver of the correct size and heave down to clip onto the side socket latch. Many a motherboard back in the day were destroyed because of this terrible latch design, if you weren't careful enough, or just unlucky, the driver would slip and smash into the board. It would knock components off the board, punch a hole in the board, or both. It was such a problem that some board vendors started putting warning stickers under the latch with pictures of bombs or hazard signs reminding the user to be careful, and that any such damage is not covered by warranty.

Ah, I wasn’t building my own machines back when this was a thing, so I missed it. What a PITA! Thanks for the information though. Much appreciated.
