Come along with me for Part 3 of the ABANDONED Erie Railroad Adventure. In this video I head north into new territory and find out that some of my research on the existence of the line was off, but in a good way. I'm very familiar with the Erie Railroad. I was born and raised in North Jersey. I lived in a small town named Wanaque from 1951 to 1964. The Erie Railroad came into Wanaque and this was the terminus of the Greenwood Lake Branch. The branch went all the way to Greenwood Lake at one time but service was discontinued in 1936. There was also a spur that went to the iron mines in Ringwood. Passenger service was discontinued on the Greenwood Lake Branch in 1966. Everything that was connected with the Erie Railroad in Wanaque is gone now. The tracks, the railroad stations. the trainyard which was located in northern Wanaque, and the steel trestle over the Wanaque River are completely gone. South of where the old Erie Railroad crosses over the NYSW tracks the old Erie tracks are still in place. This is called Pompton Junction which is located in the northwestern part of Pompton Lakes. ABSOLUTELY CORRECT 110% !!!I can verify that as I actually have glass slides scanned into photoshop files that show POMPTON JUNCTION on the woodwork. The Erie Lackawana actually passed over the Junction at a slight angle as well after arriving from Riverdale NJ. I lived on Ringwood Ave in Pompton 3 houses away from the Susie Q. It ws really cool back in the early 1950's. The old bridge is still there that crossed the acid brook where all the Dupont Posion passed cancer down south through the many towns giving cancers and heavy metal poisings to many children who died years later including many of my school friends who caught and ate the fish. I knew better. I was studying science and had a lab to know what they were doing. Ray C. PLNJ the cardinals

Those 4 cement footings was most likely a water tank at one time where the old steam engines would stop to refill the locomotive boilers with water. That's why there was water pipes around.

Jay, the Erie line goes to the Elmhurst Reservoir, turns east, and goes all the way out to Lackawaxen where it joins the mainline. Or, it did at one time. This video was very interesting from the beginning right to the end. I am looking forward to more abandoned railroad videos. The ice on the wall-how about ice curtains?

You taught me something about those extra rails close to those bridges, thank you. I am also perplexed about that portal/tunnel maybe a factory at one time. So many boomboxes in one area, and feels like velvet lol. You guys have so much fun when you are exploring awesome. Thank you for taking us on this abandoned section of the Erie Railroad.

I know exactly where you were. The gated tunnel structure is for mine water drainage as are the open underground concrete openings are all around there. Mining did take place above where these are. Great video.

The hole you found at 54.20 looks like a a concrete culvert rectangular section at the bottom for water or other liquid and a arch covering it. Think the holes are just where the arch has failed, or a place for water to drain into the culver Some one speculated it might have been for water feed for steam locos or other usage. May be a LiDAR scan of the area could suggest what was there. This is use a lot in the UK, one study around Stonehenge has changed archaeologist understanding of it. Using this even hidden overgrown structures can be seen in thick woods. A local University archaeology department might be intrested in doing one. As in the UK our local ones are looking for students to work on projects. I find especially the rail and canal ones intresting as these are my two great intrests in the UK, I also volunteer on them. It's a pity like us you abandoned the rail roads, As when I was young in my teens, I tried to explain why Beeching closure of a great part of the UK and Northan Island was a great mistake. Reducing the branch lines thay feed the main lines, which reduce the goods carried on them so they would also reduce, it's a spiral downwards. Thanks for your videos

Well that was a really interesting walk. Wow I wonder what that tunnel was for. Well this old gal learned something tonight ...I never knew what those inner rails were for until now. Lol. When I was little mom and I walked town to town along the railroad tracks. Momma never got a driver license until I was 9 yrs old and never had drove a car in her life until she was 48 yrs old. We walked everywhere we had to go. Taking the tracks sometimes was the quicker way. Now I know what those dam inner tracks I would stumble all over were for. Thanks😁✌

It is part of the story and tells a lot about engine weights used possibly. Please do that always. My town in eastern Ohio, has a abandoned branch line of Erie RR. It was closed by Conrail in 1982.

JP maybe in the future bring along a small RC off road toy that you can attach a go pro to. Then you can see into places you may not be able to get into. I used to do this with old WWII forts off the coast of Maine. We used a RC truck with a flash light attached to see before us as we traveled inside those areas.

Man I love this stuff, wish I could hang out with you guys. I guess I'll have to stick to the west coast for now. I found a great old very large abandoned rail line way up in the mountains and thought you guys would have enjoyed it. It was so overgrown I had to hack my way to get there, only new it was there because of google maps. Take care JP looking forward to the next part.

The tunnels were all filled in deliberately. Whenever the decision was made to close off that tunnel they also chose to fill it in. Did any tracks lead to it?

Those concrete holes you put your flashlight in, looks like part of that gated tunnel because of the curved ceilings.

That room thing was pretty cool. Too bad you didn’t have your drone with you. That would have been cool footage. The ice was definitely beautiful. The only thing i could come up with is Nature’s Glass but that kind of lame. lol.

Hi Jay & Friends, I'm wondering if those concrete "pyramids" were part of an old building on stilts of sorts for coal to be stored for the steam locomotives ???. A train signal bridge here in the UK is called a gantry I believe so it may have the same name there or not. I wonder if that tunnel was something to do with WW2 ?, maybe a form of bomb shelter ?? I don't know but it looks like there is a hole when you turned the camera to the left from that little hole you put the camera down but I don't know if it's big enough for a person to fit through. I think those little holes are air shafts for the tunnels, we have those a lot here in the UK. The flat area you showed on the way back, could it have been a part of an old quarry perhaps ??. A name for the icicles could be Nature's popsicles or how about Nature's curtains ?. A very cool adventure and those ice formations were spectacular, it's really awesome that a lot of the old track is still visible but you have to wonder why they didn't take it up to use somewhere else on a different line as it still looked in relatively in good condition. I have come to the conclusion we really are a very wasteful and throwaway species. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us, much love. xx 🙏💖

Concerning the back filled tunnel. Was there an old Army depot Arms and Munitions plant in that area? This is kinda similar to the Old Joyce Powder Plant in Eldred, Pennsylvania used during WW2. Deep within the mountainside, and connecting rails for the delivery.

When looking at old railroad tracks always look between to top of the rail where the train wheels go and the bottom base of the rail on the upright portion between the two you will see the Date Code of the month and year the rail was made but not the exact date when it was installed.

Just a guess but by looking at the current breaks in the walls and ceiling of the tunnel I think the lack of integrity is most likely why it was closed and to stop any and all cave ins and potential tragedies they filled it in.

That had to be coal or wood storage. It looked like you was going up an incline the trains would have to have supplies along the way because it would use more water and wood/coal to get up the incline if it had alot of cars behind it.

There's definitely more I could of done to make it convincing, but it was just a quick in the moment decision. I got the song from youtubes audio library. Just search rock songs and picked that one.
