In the middle of the Portuguese mountains, lies a town without a single inhabitant. The last resident, a 72 year old man, left the village in 2006. He could not stand the loneliness of having an entire village to himself and left for another parish.
"What were we doing there living alone? Silence grinds our heads," he says, opening an anguished smile. He moved to a village not far away, where at least they have the company of nine other residents.
The town we’re exploring today, which once belonged to a dozen residents, has become a ghost village, with tarred roads, electricity and even a fountain, opened in 1987, which still gushes water. Surprisingly, most of the houses were still completely furnished, as if the former inhabitants just vanished into the blue. Around the town, there are still other villages with local farmers who insist on living there. But there are less and less cultivated fields that, over the past 20 years, have been swallowed up by the maelstrom of eucalyptus that covers entire slopes.

The reason the water was bubbling is due to the spring water coming into the holding tank. Pure Artesian water!

I did some research on why the town's were abandoned. The village was for sale and it doesn't cost the owners much to keep the homes unoccupied for several years, waiting for an increase in price to sell them. There is another village in Portugal called Covelo do Monte in Boticas that hasn't had residents for 50 years. That would be a neat one to explore if you haven't already. Watching the tank where the water was thru me back into my childhood where after school I use to go and wash my familys cloths the stone was to bit the cloths full of soap before rinsing it in the well how heart warming the note to strangers to help urseves but do not break anything memories that the heart can't carry everyday because the saudades are too heavy to carry and the lagrimas too bitter to the lips when they roll down ur face and touch ur lips

I spent much of my childhood in a place like this: No electricity, running water, roads so poor that you couldn’t drive into them, etc. There was no bathroom, or toilet. We had to go up the hill behind the house to “do our business”. We kept a pile of corn husks near the front door, to use as toilet paper. You’d just grab one and head up the hill. I helped my grandparents by herding the goats, helping out with the harvest, participating in the slaughter of the pig, etc. In those days, (1960’s) there was life, laughter, excellent food, celebrations, culture, music. It was the best time of my life and I never really got over the trauma of immigrating from there to a large North American city. But, it was a very hard life for the adults. In the 70’s everyone started emigrating to the cities and to the rest of Europe. My grandfather always lamented not having left the place in his youth. Today, only 7 people live there, most in their 70’s and 80’s. I must be crazy but, I plan on buying a small home there, when I retire in 10 years. It’s the Citizen Kane effect.

Join the club, "Filho da Rosa" (cute name, by the way 🙂). I did and lived all those things too and also dream of having a house in my grandparents' village after retiring.... 🙂.... mainly for the memories it would invoke.... 🙂

This is when you have to have complete trust in your driver! Reminds me of driving through mountains in Colorado where I used to live! What an awesome journey you took us on. This was a really unique find. The tank of water to wash clothes had those slanted grooves so you could scrub your clothes. Here in south Louisiana USA we had something smaller, but it was called a rub board. I've washed many clothes using this & stomping on them in a tub of water to get them clean, then hung them outside to dry. Thanks guys, this was awesome! 💜🙋‍♀️🇺🇲

@@darlenesykes2009 it's called a "frottoir" in french. Rubboard, washboard & scrubboard, which the cajuns used in the old days as a musical instrument when it wasn't being used to clean clothes.

Top floor of the one building had living plants outside the door (38:24) as well as inside (39:12). The floor, dishes, and windows were clean. Appears that someone is still staying there or taking care of the plants at least. Plants don't survive without water. Great explore.

I agree with you, I would have to say that several families are using the ancestral homes as "vacation" homes as they are much cleaner and better taken care of than many of the other homes. The evidence of newer calendars and the green plants indoors proves that someone has been there in the last 4-6 week, maybe even sooner.

@@kkingshott I commented the same above. I think its a vacation or cottage get away for some people in what is probably ancestral homes. Its a wonderful idea, so far into nature, in a home your great grand parents might have be born in. Amazing thing to do. They might not be happy to see this vid on KZfaq and 2 guys walking through, however careful they are.

Someone must be using those two clean places fro weekend or summer holidays and it has been summer so everything is still fresh. From the texture and smell of ash in the fireplace you could judge how long ago the fire was lit.

That was the most interesting video. My granddaughter watched with me and enjoyed it also. She thinks the house plants were still alive because people could still be living there, but have not updated their calendar. Of course it could be ghosts! Those last couple of houses were as if someone was still coming there!! There's no accumulation of dirt and dust!! It's way too clean and refreshing!! Agreed, I think people are coming back periodically, from working in the city to getting some money together, then coming back to stay rent free, in ancestral homes, that they fix up a bit to make livable for a few months of the summer, before they go back to the city to work through the winter months. Makes sense, I'd do it. You would get the best of both worlds, the city and fun there, which you can get fed up with after a while and want some quite time away from people, chill, enjoy the country.

I've a special interest in ghost towns, as the village where I grew up is now a ghost town. This was unbelievable; the journey up the mountainous road itself was fascinating! There's probably myriad reasons why this is now a ghost town. I'm sure the inhabitants took what they deemed the most necessary and personal when they moved away because let's face it, that wouldn't be an easy move to make. I washed a lot of clothes In tanks like that. We are farmers and until I was 16 we didn't have electricity so we washed our clothes like this. Wow what a beautiful place very reminiscent of the state of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul Here in Brazil . I would live in a place like this without a problem with electricity.

The journey to village was just as interesting as the village, that was until you got to the house with so many personal belonging. You have got top marks for this one. Shame your partner in crime wasn't with you. He would so love to find the car. Thank you for taking us on a mother wonderful journey. Wow, what a fascinating exploration of life in Portugal's mountainside. Amazing to see how people lived in a close communal life. I can imagine the women talking and scrubbing their family's clothes against the ribbed stone surface then dunking the clothes for the 'rinse cycle'. Great explore! It amazes me that there is so much history hidden away in these remote areas. At the same time, it's sad to see the life taken away. I always believed that houses have souls, and when they're abandoned, that soul withers away from lonliness.

Live plants, people are there often. Maybe just for a weekend getaway. The first home you were in on the hill was being renovated. The landscape was freshly cut, new wood inside, power cord, etc. That last house is still used, it is too well maintained.

My father said in North Carolina the kids would gather up snakes in a sack to pour in the corn crib to chase out the rats. All the neighbors would stand around the crib and kill the rats as they ran away from the snakes. The event was called a rat killing’.

Thank you for being respectful during the making of your video. Portuguese country people gave their blood, sweat and tears to build villages and families in those places. It's possible that some descendants still return there for vacations, but vandals mess it up while empty. throughout the year. Too bad!

Shout out to you guys! Super explorations and you do it in such a sensitive to both the history and people who once lived in these beautiful homes. This one was particularly cool. You and your team have shed a light on those that are becoming seniors. Best to rid oneself of these belongings by donating to charity or of course passing down through generations. I give items to many over my life time. It is kind and the right thing to do. Thank you William

Several thoughts came to mind while watching this. First, where did they buy gas for their vehicle cause that was a LONG road up that mountain. It wouldn't be good to run out of gas while there, ha ha. Second, there WAS electricity there because of light switches, refrigerators, etc. but WHERE did the power come from ( I mean how far away?) and third, We saw oranges but were there grape orchards also to make all that wine? Thanks for the tour guys....it is an awesome place. I think someone DID live there up until 2018. It's still a clean house.

to answer some things, in Portugal there are wind turbines that are fairly old on almost all mountains, as well there are many rivers where they use the power of the stream to get electricity. As well many houses had their own orchards and because people living in these villages are usually extended families or friends they would all make the wine together, since its an old tradition that we still have

This was such a COOL explore I had to prop my ipad up in the kitchen and burn my breakfast while I watched it. I ended up with only toast and coffee, the eggs were a total loss but it was worth it! Absolutely fascinating.

From the drone footage there are fields with vines that look well cared for. It may be that someone comes back to tend the fields and uses the house for the time they are there.

Portugal is beautiful and so are the people, I love visiting there and every time a new experience. Sintra is so stunning ! Portugal is the only country I have been in that I would say is more beautiful than my own (Ireland) jbh! Portuguese people as so welcoming and friendly just like in Ireland! Can't wait to get back to visit when the restrictions are over .. mid to north Portugal is my favorite and so natural .. and those sunsets ....!!! Thank you for sharing!

What an amazing find. I don't think you will ever find another place so fascinating. The history of this town must be so old. I cannot imagine how long this town was occupied. The drive to the town was similar to drives I have made in the mountains of the USA. There one can also find abandoned towns as well as individual homes. Great explore.

The entire time you investigated the homes and structures I kept wanting to grab my camera and go crazy. There were so many textures and shapes, and the unpredictable ways that abandoned structures break down. Combined with the beauty of the mountains, it made my heart race. Of course, when you found the well preserved properties it was a surprise. I started to think someone was living in the clean, furnished house. It's stunning how the degree of decay varies in that location. I have trouble imagining how anyone would hope to revitalize that land and earn a profit, but someone must own it. There was a concentrated effort to seal up the property behind the locked gate. My mind is wandering too much, but I loved watching this exploration. Now ... someone get me my camera!

This was very interesting. I couldn't tell if Danny said the water was warm in the catchment or cold but it would have been maybe spring fed. Someone must visit the house with the plants since they are still alive and looking really good. In the US the builds for corn storage are called Corn Cribs. Take care and stay safe you guys

That water is called a 'boils', it's where the spring forces the water up through the ground, artesian spring. I would guess that even though you didn't try the faucets, they probably do work, probably also the shower. Thank you for the video! I'm surprised you didn't take an orange or two & spring water is the best water in the world.

So Americans get taught dumb stuff (like we are more advanced than anyone else _ forgive me it is just what our schools teach) leaving me amazed that there is electricity way up in the mountains and it is mapped for GPS. It is wonderful to travel with you and to learn of your people and ways. You guys are awesome. This 69-year-old globally minded human is very open and curious about the world. Thanks a million. I need to stop typing and watch and listen.

It’s called Corn Cribs. Corn is commonly grown for cattle feed throughout Portugal. Traditional corn cribs are still seen on smaller farms and particularly in poor, remote mountainous areas
