It's almost surreal to see a place nearly pristine so near to the city. Almost no graffiti and nearly no litter.

Not a highway. It was the overpass from Mound to the Whittier peninsula. There is a park there now but there used to be warehouses that supplied multiple department stores including Lazarus. Not an abandoned freeway but an abandoned overpass that was tore down to make way for the 70/71 split redesign.

Ok I'm perplexed that this exists in a city I lived in for 35 years. Driven under it countless times. Then again it is C-bus city council and mayors running the joint, haha.

We Are Stronger Together. I love that. I hope they could put that section to good use instead of it being abandoned for good like a bike and walking trail. Cool video.

Me too, sends a great message with all that’s going on right now, honestly it’s what inspired me to film this place, I wish more abandoned places can be beautified with nice graffiti instead of the normal crap.

@@tropicalpalmtree Only if it's allowed to happen. That's the problem. People will readily fight, disagree, hate, kill and destroy all very easily. If we want any peace or want to save lives and cultures and ways of life, it requires work, compromise and a willingness to listen to others. The world or at least for the most part, doesn't HAVE to be ripped apart. That's a choice, not a certainty.

Cool video!! It kind of reminds me the Centralia Graffiti Highway in Pennsylvania, but lots less graffiti!! Interesting history. Thank you John. Wish I could be here for the live premiers. I work funky hours and can’t even look at my phone at work. Hopefully next time!!!

This was the Mound Street overpass over I-70/I-71. There used to be an interchange here, but it was too close to the I-70/I-71 interchange. The interchange ramp spacing was too close.

Hi John, I think you have a talent for this. Could you do more? Have you ever been to Sessions Village just north of Bexley off of Broad St? It's a small euro-germanic group of private homes.

Ha funny how im just not coming across this video. I'm from Columbus and got to explore this abandoned overpass a couple months back. It was such a great view over I-70/I-71, sadly, it has been completely torn down and there is no way of accessing either side :(
@aydnn7170

oh and as a follow up as i watch this, they actually didn't need to close down either freeway to deconstruct it. I was leaving downtown one day and saw workers taking it apart bit by bit. Though, i do assume that a lot of the tear down process was done at night to minizine accidents.

I saw the stenciling on the far right of the green painted beams under the overpass, as I drove under it for years. It was last spray-painted in 1986.

I wonder when and why it was abandoned. Reminds me of the old Viola Ave bridge over SR 11 in Austintown. It was built in the late 60s with the assumption that Viola would be expanded to cross the freeway but it never happened, and the bridge to nowhere was finally demolished about 10 years ago. Up until 1994, the Oakcrest Dr bridge, just south of Viola, was also a bridge to nowhere. It was only 26 years ago the road was expanded and the bridge was finally put to use about 25 years after being built

@@JohnCassity You mean the abandoned pedestrian bridge over 80 between Liberty and Girard? That was knocked down a few years ago
@savageboner
@savageboner Жыл бұрын
It likely has something to do with the Scioto Mile on one end, and Audubon Metro park on the other. It made sense to turn it into a pedestrian bridge, but the cost of maintaining it would have been too great. It has now been demolished as part of the I71/I70 improvement.

Yes, Mound had a "viaduct" that went over the train tracks then continued SW then S onto Whittier, which essentially followed the current walking path at Scioto Audubon Metro Park, but was wide enough for cars. What is now the Scioto Audubon park was industrial with factories and warehouses so it was used as a short cut to that area from downtown. When 70 was built it was partially used as entrance and exit ramps to the new freeway, until better engineered ramps were built in the mid 70s. The bridge over 70 was closed to vehicle traffic around 1986 and the portion over the tracks demolished in the late 90s before Miranova was built.

It was a well used overpass as a shortcut to what is now the Brewery District from downtown until the mid 1980s, when the bridge started to fall into disrepair. It was closed in the mid 80s due to safety concerns. The section of Bridge over Mound Street over the tracks, before it curved south onto Whittier, was much older and closed in 1989, then demolished in the mid 90s. This bridge is scheduled to come down in 2022.
