This missed the history of slavery of koreans that was committed on this island during the height of imperial japan. They forced koreans into harshnliving conditions to provide coal for japan here

I'm the photographer featured in this short documentary and helped the crew get permission to film on the island and talk to the local residents. We filmed it back in 2013 and it was heaps of fun working with the production crew. We shot so much it's little disappointing the feature was cut so short. I had no hand in the final edit, and I'm definitely not the first person to rediscover this island, although I did visit before it was featured in Skyfall or became a listed World Heritage Site. But what a walk down memory lane, seeing this uploaded nearly 10 years later!

"The most packed place in the world" looks like one of the happiest places by the pictures and videos, but that is only because of a sense of community and parents making sure their kids are as happy as possible.

I went there some years ago. Unfortunately it started raining about 10 minutes after we got there so we weren't able to complete the tour on the island and so we just went around it in the boat after that. Fascinating how they had a school, hospital and everything they needed on one small island to cater to the community. Did you know that the James Bond movie "Skyfall" was filmed there? Not sure if they mentioned that. Also known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island).

yeah its sad island and sad memories for them but most likely for korean people whom used to be a slave to mine coal. the worst part of this island during world war 2. this island is a product of japanese imperialism causing heartbreaking memories for japanese and korean.

This is the very island that Japan committed forced labour during 2nd World War against Korean and Chinese. Also called Gunkanjima (軍艦島; meaning Battleship Island) it is located off the coast of Nakasaki (very city the 2nd A-bomb was dropped) in East China Sea. It is thousand mile apart from South China Sea. The apartments were built after war to house Japnese paid workers and families. Please do not repoert stories that was glass over by Japan's Special Interest Entities to distorting the history of it and facts.

Brightside has released a brief background video regarding why the island was abandoned. It's basically about biohazard coal brings to humans because hashima solely focused before on coal minning. Japan ordered closure of all coal mining & transitioned to oil. Hashima was not spared. Hashima island was inhabited only for workers in the coal mining. They were relocated after Japan gov't ordered closure of coal minings which caused closure of the island.

The photographer Michael says he finds that its falling to ruin very beautiful in a sense. What is so beautiful about mankind not cleaning up after itself. Theres places all over the world that have ruined the ecology and left as eyesores.I suppose 500 years from now people will visit places like this that will hopefully be overgrown with plant life and they'll come across some relic and then archeologists will discover it was once inhabited. They'll wonder what happened to the people and why it was abandoned....
